1.What is considered to be the most significant contribution of the Spaniards to us and why?

Spain not only brought the Catholic religion to the Philippine islands, it also brought with it its
culture and cuisine. And the impact of the Spanish influence on local cuisine is very much evident during
religious feasts, especially at Christmas.
During the Spanish rule, westernized culture gradually began to seep into the Filipino way of life.
Western music, dance, art, recreation and customs were adopted by Filipinos. Even their beliefs and
perspectives about life experienced a bit of a drift away from Eastern muslim philosophies to a more
westernized perspective. One example of this was the abolishment of slavery. Classes between the rich and
poor, however, remained.

2. How are these Spanish traditions affects us in so many ways?

Most of these special occasion dishes trace their roots to the Spanish colonial days. When the
Spaniards arrived, they brought with them ingredients and labor-intensive cooking methods that were
unknown in the Philippines. Roasted whole pigs, the rich meat stews and dairy-based sweets that the
Spaniards loved were considered luxuries to the locals. Consequently, in the Filipino home, these dishes were
reserved only for specials days like fiestas and Christmas. Put another way, the Filipinos turned so deeply
Catholic that, to their minds, no occasion is more special than the days dedicated to the important personages
in the history of the Catholic church.
Over time, Filipinos came up with their adaptations of these various Spanish dishes. But the idea that
they were more appropriate for feasts than for everyday meals remained. And because the most important
personality in the Catholic religion is Jesus, then, his natal day is the most special of all occasions.
It is hardly surprising that the Noche Buena feast and the Christmas day meals are laden with for-special-
occasions-only Spanish dishes and local adaptations of Spanish
dishes. Lechon, puchero, fabada, paella, morcon, embutido, leche flan, and churros are only some of the
favorite Christmas dishes.

3. If given the chance to time travel back to this era, what could you possibly impart to them as a
Filipino?
If I was given a chance, I will introduce to them our Baybayin—it was the pre-colonial writing
system in the Philippines. We are also rich in literature like Philippine folk tales, epics, poems, and chants
existed in most ethnolinguistic groups. We also have Pre-colonial literary pieces transferred in traditional
narratives, speeches, and songs include Tigmo in Cebuano, Bugtong in Tagalog, patototdon in Bicol, and
paktakon in Ilonggo. The Philippines also have deities, this is a collection of beliefs in the idea that the world
is inhabited by spirits and supernatural entities, both good and bad, and that respect must be accorded to them
through worship. If these was used and flourished during Spanish time, how amazing to think about that it
still used and preserved in our generations.
