Question 1

A toll-plaza has 7 toll-booths, each with a mean service rate of 240 veh/hr. The arrival rate at the
toll-plaza is 1200 veh/hr and is divided equally among all the toll-booths. Answer the following
questions:

(a) Determine the probability that at least one toll-booth is idle (i.e., there are no vehicles at
that toll-booth).

(b) Plot how probability calculated in (a) changes with the arrival rate.

(c) What is the probability that the toll-plaza is idle?

(d) Plot how probability calculated in (c) changes with the number of toll-booths.

Question 2

Show that the probability that all N toll-booths in a toll-plaza have the same queue length is

(1 − ρ)N
1 − ρN

where, ρ = λµ , λ is the arrival rate of vehicles at each toll-booth and µ is the service rate for a
toll-booth.

Question 3

A parking lot can be modelled as a queuing system where each parking stall is a server and people
who arrive at the parking lot parks their vehicle if a parking stall is free. As long as the vehicle is
parked at a parking stall, it is like vehicle getting served. At the end of the service ( at the end of
the parking requirement), the person leaves the parking lot. This kind of system can be modelled
as multiple server single queue system, where total number of servers is equal to capacity of the
parking lot. Assume that the arrivals of vehicle to the parking lot follow Poisson distribution and
and the occupancy time of a parking stall is distributed exponentially. The arrival rate of vehicles
to parking lot is 120 veh/hr and mean occupancy time at a parking stall is 10 minutes. If there
are 10 parking spaces at that parking lot,

(a) what is the probability that parking lot is full?

(b) what is the probability that occupancy remains below 70% of the capacity?

Question 4

In modern days, information is given to drivers on how many parking spots (stalls) are full in the
particular parking lot. Based on this information drivers decides whether to go to that parking
lot or not. Arrival rate,λn and departure rate, µn are as follows
(
λ
, 0≤n<c
λn = n+1
0, n=c

µn = nµ, n = 1, 2, .....c
where, n is number of parking spots that are occupied and c is capacity of parking lot. Answer
the following question:

(a) Plot arrival rate (λn ) with n for 0 ≤ n ≤ c

(b) Show that the probability of reaching capacity is:

ρc
Pc = n
(c!)2 ∑cn=0 (n!)
