Critique on a research paper to be given in class. Comment on the ff sections:

1. Relevance of chosen topic

Definitely, the topic is relevant because many consumers nowadays want to live
a more sustainable way of life, which the World Economic Forum has referred to as an
"eco-wakening”. Because of that, many companies are responding to this trend
(Hubbart, 2022). In addition, more than half of the world population now is millennials or
younger, the ones who experienced the impacts of climate change firsthand and this
young generation will represent the socially conscious consumers of the future.
According to (Ohio University, 2022), as the population of millennial consumers grows, it
is imperative that businesses consider the corporate social responsibility landscape.
Adopting a socially responsible model is essential to attract one of the largest market
segments. Millennials are particularly tech-savvy and often think about researching
companies and delving into their ethics and work practices. Many people feel compelled
to do their part to make the world a better place and this emerging generation does not
want to associate or support companies that are not responsible for the world and its
people. A recent Deloitte survey found that 70% of millennials admitted that a
company's commitment to social responsibility influenced their decision to work there.
With the younger generation soon becoming the largest segment of the workforce,
companies that want to hire these workers will need to adopt CSR to attract and retain
talent. Millennials don't just want to use the products and services of companies with a
CSR presence. They also want to be a part of these social and ecological changes
(Ohio University, 2022).
Hence, the study is relevant since corporate social responsibility is growing in
importance in this day and age as many companies ramp up their focus and take social
responsibility seriously to adopt this trend, most especially to remain competitive in the
business world. For embracing CSR in the company can win consumers, as well as
develop a platform to market and earn their audience's attention (Heyward, 2020).
Moreover, more consumers nowadays are asking companies to change the way they do
business, be more transparent and play an active role in solving social, cultural and
environmental issues. With that being said, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has
established its place in today's corporate world, and companies that ignore it are at risk
(Ohio University, 2022).

2. Appropriateness of Framework of study

Honestly, I cannot find the framework of the study in the given article. What I
have found is that the author mentions theories that are appropriate to the study but she
put it under the literature review of the study. I am not certain if the author intentionally
put it there but what I am certain about is that there’s something wrong and lacking
about how she constructs and organizes her research. In the dissertation, I observed
that there is no conceptual framework (schematic diagram) that can be tested in the
study that is grounded on the theoretical framework. I also noticed that the author
integrates the theoretical framework of the study and its related literature in one section,
which is I think is a mistake because the TF and RRL must be separated or divided into
two, for one cannot guide a reader through thinking about a dissertation study without a
clear distinction and explication of the study’s theoretical framework.
It is said that a literature review and a theoretical framework are not the same
thing and cannot be used interchangeably (scribbr.com). While a theoretical framework
describes the theoretical underpinnings of your research, a literature review critically
evaluates existing research relating to your topic. Therefore, the author must need to
have both literature review and theoretical framework in the dissertation independently
so that readers can spot it in his/her first reading of the paper.

3. Quality of Methodology used to gather and analyze data

The quality of methodology, the way they gather and analyze data were very
precise and effective in this study. It is also important that the researcher briefed the
purpose of the survey and ethically, the researcher also asked for a consent and told
them about data privacy for the respondents of their survey. They’ve also mentioned
their expectations on the result of their study before conducting the result itself. One
thing that I’ve noticed is that they did not mention what kind of statistical tool they use to
identify the result in their survey.

4. Adequateness of RRL used to support the study.

In this paper, there are two Review of Related Literature used to support their
study. First is the CSR Theory, according to Friedman (1970), a corporate leader has
direct duty to the business's owners. According to legal and ethical restrictions, that
responsibility is to make as much money as necessary. Friedman says only individuals
can have duties, and CSR resources are better spent boosting firm efficiency.
Freeman's (1984) "stakeholder theory" that managers balance the interests of
employees, suppliers, customers, the community, etc. Orlitzky and Benjamin (2001) and
others say firms have responsibilities above stock price maximization.

Second is the Student Perceptions of CSR, today's business students should be

asked about the role of business in society. Singhapakdi et al. (1996) created the
13-statement PRESOR instrument to quantify CSR. Respondents rate each statement
on a 9-point Likert scale. PRESOR ranks CSR on profitability, long-term success, and
short-term success.

The researchers used a method called PRESOR instrument to measure the

quality of CSR. Gender, age, ethnicity, year in school, major, employment history,
ethical coursework, grade point average, and spirituality are all factors that make up the
data set used to create a demographic profile. The PRESOR instrument, consisting of
13 statements, was used to analyze how students thought about CSR.

This instrument shows strong evidence of analytical thinking through the

connections between the literature being reviewed.
The information and evidence were wide enough to cover or provide enough
information required on the subject. However, when creating a review of related
literature, students were advised to use references published in the past ten years for
research. In this paper, there are a lot of references in the year 1990-2000 because
informational resources in the sectors of business, finance, education, and the social
sciences need to be more productive if they are to serve their fields effectively. This is
due to the fact that new developments in these areas are constantly being made, and
new knowledge is being relayed rapidly to those who work in these fields.
