Nursing informatics and the nurse informaticist.

Definition of nursing informatics?

According to Collins et al. (2017), nursing informatics is the nursing competence, which includes

information sciences, nursing aspects and computers in creating and sustaining medical

information or data and overall healthcare systems. It is a perspective applied in nursing to

provide aid in the nursing field and boost the results of patients visiting the healthcare facilities.

Healthcare information and management systems (HIMSS) recognizes nursing informatics as a

healthcare sector that amalgamates nursing sciences, several information systems, and nursing

sciences- bid to provide the best possible outcome for healthcare services through

communication, defining, and analyzing, among others procedures that improve the practice. The

highly ranked technological appliances applied to nursing informatics include electronic medical

records and electronic provider order registration.

Role of nursing informaticists.

Nurse informatics have pivotal parts to play in the health care sector. Of great importance is the

help of the nurse informaticists in operating the health care applications through technological

appliances, for example, computerized provider entry and the electronic medical report for

patients visiting the health care facilities. It is also essential to recognize that nurse informaticists

also cooperate and collaborate with the rest of other health workers to ensure that the gap

between the clinical and technical views is minimal.

The nurse informaticist also performs another crucial function: creating, controlling, and

processing data of the visiting patients to identify the essential information that leads to more

straightforward medical practices. It is also vital to note that a nurse informaticist ensures

minimal medical practices cost and errors. Generally, nurse informaticist deploy technology in

the healthcare sector to boost coordination and, as a result, aid other healthcare practitioners in

decision-making.

Experience of other healthcare organizations with nurse informaticists.

It is important to note that nurse informaticists can perform healthcare functions with other

organizations within the medication parameters. As per HIMSS, nurse informaticists share

information and experience with other organizations in many ways. First, nurse informaticist

matches their skill in the medical practice with medical provision procedures and workflow and,

as a result, an increase in the services provided to the patients. This means that the burse

informaticist participates in diagnosis, clinical workflow inspection, treatment procedures, and

process organization in conjunction with other organizations. It is also vital to note that the nurse

informaticist shares experience by deploying both value and patient-based technological

appliances to assist in providing care.

In situations where the experience of nurse informaticists and other healthcare organizations

meet, their strength is in their capability of positively affecting clinical proceedings such as

processes, policies, protocol, etc. The informaticists use data collected to aid the organization in

decision-making. It is crucial to note that nurse informaticist ensure the credibility of information

meant for a healthcare organization and, therefore, accuracy in the processes and protocols in the

healthcare organization procedures. As a result, a nurse informaticist uses data to determine and

analyze the execution of healthcare organizations in respect to positively influencing patients'

health.

The healthcare organization also benefits from its interaction with the nurse informaticist in

informatics data education. The training of the medical staff is to ensure that such staff make a

correct elucidation of the healthcare information. Actions such as training ensure that other

health workers gain new skills due to nurse informaticist that introduces learning programs to

other healthcare organizations.

How nurse informaticists interact with the rest of the nursing staff and the

interdisciplinary team.

The nursing field is widespread and requires the unification of nurse informaticist with other

medical disciplinarians like the interdisciplinary team and other nursing staff. An example of

nursing staff is the nurse manager, who is in charge of the positive impacts of patients' health

through the application of nurse informatics. This means that interaction between the manager

and the nurse infromaticist kis related to choosing and testing new health technological devices.

The nurse informaticist act to function as an advisor to the nurse manager about the most

appropriate medical device, which is then procured with an aim of offering the complete

information about patients' health. Nurse informaticists have the best understanding of

informatics data and, therefore, can provide the most practical guides to nursing staff when

diagnosing and treating patients (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021).

Nurse informatics can also carry out their functions while coopering with the nurse clerk to

reduce medical costs. The informatics can also share ideas with the nursing staff to ensure

reduced medical errors. It is also established that the cooperation between the interdisciplinary

team staff and the nurse informatics is key in taking care of the welfare of patients. Different

medical disciplinarians like dietarians, nurse practitioners, doctors, audiologists, among others,

all depend on the data provided by the nurse informatics to complete their medical procedures

successfully. This portrays a dependency on nurse informatics for every positive outcome

experienced by the different interdisciplinary medics.

How fully engaging nurses in healthcare technology impact;

o Patients care

The application of healthcare technology by a nurse boost the well-being of a patient. A keen

look into it, several lives are saved because of the technological use applied by the nurses. For

the safety of the patients, nurses use informatics appliances like automated blood pressure gears

and telemetry. The technological knowledge application in the healthcare sector also makes it

possible for patients to monitor patients' treatment progress closely, and as a result, improve

patients' well-being.

o Protected health information.

When nurses use healthcare technology, the privacy, confidentiality and security of patients

become the priority. Healthcare data is stored in a soft copy promises security and privacy. The

backup of the patients' healthcare data also ensures that data is not lost in incidences leading to

loss like fire. There is also a sense of security since the data stored in the informatics systems is

only shared between the patient and their respective medics.

o Workflow

The informatic appliances boost the efficiency of work, thereby increasing the workflow. This

happens due to the organizations of the electronic systems that provide an opportunity for the

nurse to respond within the shortest time possible to the patients. This is also expounded by the

ease with which nurses can access the patient's data, thereby assisting them where possible.

o Cost and return on investment.

The cost of using technology when attending to a patient is low due to the maximization of time

which patients are attended. This happens due to the reduced waiting period, which enables

many patients to be treated within a short period. When looking at the return investment, the

application of technology in nursing proves expensive. This is brought about by the fact that

patients are called upon to pay a particular amount of fee to access their health information, and

as a result, the technology on healthcare generates good returns to investment.

Opportunities and challenges.

Nurse informaticists will provide an opportunity for both interdisciplinary teams and nurses

because more individuals will be visiting health facilities for medical check-ups. There is an

opportunity for interdisciplinary teams and nurses to acquire new skills because of nurse

informatics's learning opportunity. The main challenge would be the difficulty that comes with

the interpretation of data presented in the nurse informatics. When the parties involved do not get

enough training, there is a chance of misdiagnosis, resulting in adverse patient outcomes.

How interdisciplinary teams can improve quality through technology

The technology can be applied in the stage of diagnosis, which will ensure that only the correct

diagnosis is conducted. The interdisciplinary team can also work together to interpret data, which

will aid in decision-making. In summary, the interdisciplinary should collaborate and use the

technology in developing treatment methods and monitoring the recovery stage of patients.

Summary of the recommendation

The Chief Nursing Officer and the Human Resource manager should have the ability to capture

the critical roles of the nurse informaticist; that is, technology in nurse informatics can only be

implemented by buying informatics tools that are concordant to the healthcare quality desired. It

is also worth noting that nursing informatics tools are beneficial in the healthcare sector since

they minimize the cost and medical errors and invite a staggering number of patients. It is

essential to note the revolution in nurse informatics, and therefore, nurses offer a trustworthy

source of information when establishing a technological system in the health sector.
