Identify which speech you viewed. Name the speaker.

I viewed the “How do you know you’re not dreaming?” spoken by Daniel Gregory,
presented by TED Ed.

In responding to the following, do not summarize the content of the speech.

Analyze the decision the speaker made in each of the speech areas to make
sure that each speech component did its job.

Respond to the following for the introduction of the speech.

How did the speaker gain the interest of the audience?

The speaker gained the attention of the audience by giving us a very outlandish
narrative to consider, being a butterfly. And then explains what will be talked
about in a subtle and entertaining way.

Relate to the audience?

They use some very relatable examples after their introduction, but interrupts
those relatable things using again very outlandish ideas to keep the listener
engaged in their own questioning of the topic. It is very clear that the speaker
understands the usefulness of making people ponder deeper into topics whilst in
the middle of learning about it for presumably the first time.

preview the main points?

The main points are revealed when the speaker tells us about a subsection of the
topic we are being presented with. I.e. lucid dreamers knowing that they are
dreaming, but how do they know that/how does that relate to normal dreamers
somehow being able to contrast from dreaming and reality).
How did the speaker let you know the speech was ending?

The audience was aware the speech was going to end because most of the
questions that were presented as the main topics for the speech were answered,
as well as answering the main question that was presented in the title. The
speaker also presents the audience with a closing question(s) to consider after
learning about the topic as they just have.

Reiterate the ideas of the speech?

When closing the ideas of the speech, the speaker reiterated, in this case, why
we all know we are either dreaming or awake.

Did the speech you viewed have an effective beginning and end? Why or why
not?

Yes, as a video that relied on heavy use of visuals they helped us understand
that the speech was coming to a close, as well as the speaking cadence, tone,
and topic changing throughout the speech.

In what way(s) if any, did visual aids add to the speech?

Without watching the video, the speech came off as a very confusing topic, but
nevertheless the speech covered most of its bases. Although, it was easy to let
your mind wander during the speech without the visuals.

What jobs were the visual aids doing for the audience?

The visuals were helping the audience focus on the topic by providing something for another
one of their senses to focus on that was related to the topic. It also kept the mind focused on
that topic by doing that. And in general they served as an explanation aid for the audience when
things got less straight forward.
