Concept Notes:

Platform Behavior- A general rule to remember is that everything that a speaker

does and does not do must have proper motivation. Mannerisms, such as scratching your
head, rubbing your nose, looking at the ceiling, playing with your fingers, and others are
inconsistent with the characteristics of a good speaker. These should be avoided.

Posture- Balance the weight of your body on both feet at all times. There is no
fixed rule as to how the feet are to be positioned, but it can be said that they must
reasonably be apart or close together.

Loudness- A good speaker must be fully aware of his audibility while speaking.
Pay attention to the people in the last row. If they can hear you, then everybody can.

Clarity- The diction used in an ordinary conversation is different from the diction
used for audiences. What is clear in an ordinary conversation may not be clear to an
audience. The nature of the speaking situation must be taken into consideration.
Therefore, speak slower and enunciate the words a little more deliberately than in
ordinary conversation.

Pronunciation- The pronunciation of English words is distinct and separate from

the pronunciation of any other language or dialect. Whenever in doubt as to your
pronunciation, consult a modern dictionary/ speaking dictionary and listen how the words
are uttered.

Grammar- Correct grammar is nothing more than the accepted usage of the
language. It is not really a matter of intelligence, but a matter of use. Knowing the rules of
grammar and actually applying them is very helpful in shortening the period of learning.
But most practical thing to do is expose yourself to the language as often as possible:
thinking, reading, writing, speaking, listening, even dreaming in the language, if possible.
If you often do these, you will achieve improvement.

Self- confidence- is explained by a dictionary to mean assurance or assured

expectation or the mental attitude of trust, reliance, or faith. It is essential to a successful
delivery because, really, it takes a lot of courage to stand before a group of people.

Peace and Poise- A confident person has a peace of mind and poise in delivery.
The following may help you gain self- confidence:
1. Take care of your physical appearance. Be well-groomed at all times. The
saying
“clothes make the man” still holds true. Dressing properly may command
respect.

2. Prepare well. A good deal of success in public speaking hinges/ is dependent

on
preparation. When one is not prepared, definitely, his/her confidence is also
affected. He/she will fumble for words to say when in fact, it could have been
avoided.

3. Face up to your audience. Look at individual members of your audience straight

in the eye. Talk to them as you should.

4. Exercise before delivery and more within proper bounds during delivery.
Physical
movement relaxes your muscles and minimizes tension.

5. Concentrate on your speech and on your audience. In delivering the speech, the
speaker should concentrate on the subject matter of his speech and on his
audience. That way, he thinks less about himself. That way, too, he can be
substantive about his speech and be truly communicative with his audience.

6. Be determined. As in all human endeavors, determination is the key that opens

the door to success. If you are prone to give up easily, you are defeated even
before you start. The will to speak is similar to the will to live. Indeed, if you think
that something will be so, it will be so.

7. Go through the same situations repeatedly and watch your confidence develop
rapidly. Without a warm reaction from the people around, no speaker can be at
ease, unless he himself exerts effort to bring about the right warmth that he
expects.

Performance Task:

Since you already learned about the types of speeches from your previous lesson, and
above are some necessary tips on how to do public speaking, you are now to deliver a
simple speech as a *life coach to help the people whose livelihood were affected by
the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The speech must be a 2 or 3- MINUTE PERSUASIVE
MEMORIZED SPEECH. Note that you should put into consideration the concepts
presented above. Dress properly/ appropriately. Take a video record of your speech
and send the soft copy to your teacher via private message. Please choose a quiet
place in your home in delivering your speech. See the rubrics below for your guidance
as to how you will be given points.
