Myrrh
Synoyms – Gum resin Myrrh, Gum Myrrh ,
Arabian or Somali Myrrh, ,Myrrha

Biological Source– Myrrh is an oleo gum resin


obtained from the stem of
Commiphora molmol Engler
or Commiphora Belonging to
Family Burseraceae

• Geographical Source- It is in Arabian Pennisula
indigenous to eastern
Mediterranean countries
Africa, Ethiopia, Arabia,
Asia, East Africa,Yemen.
Morphology- Myrrh occurs as irregular masses
or tears weighing up to 250 gm.
colour- Reddish Brown .
Odour- Arregrable and Aromatic.
Size- 1.5 to 3.0 cm diameter
Shape – Rounded or irregular tears.

• Chemical Constituents –
= The myrrh contains 7.17% of volatile oil
25: 40 % of resin 57:61% of gum and some
3:4% of impurities.
= Large portion of the resin is ether soluble
containing alpha,beta and resenes the
esters of another resin acid and to phenolic
compounds

• The crude gum from the alcohol insoluble matter
contains 18% protein and 64% carbohydrates and
Glucuronic acid.
• The gum is associated with the oxidized enzyme.

• Chemical Test
1) A yellow brown emulsion is produce on
trituration with water.
2) Etheral solution of myrrh turns red on
treatment with bromin vapours.
3) Sample and add 1ml of nitric acid .it develops
red colour .

• Uses :
= It helps in the treatment of respiratory
complains.
= It is used in trestment of acne boils and
arthritis.
= It is added in perfumes.
= It is used as an carminative and in incense
= It has local stimulant and antiseptic properties
and is utilized in toothpowders and as mouth
wash.

= Topically it is astringent to mucous membrane
= It reduces the cholesterol and triglycirdes.
= Alcoholic extract are used as fixatives in the
perfmury industry.
