TOGAF 9 Overview
Module Description
“TOGAF is an architecture framework — The Open Group Architecture Framework.’’
TOGAF is published by The Open Group and may be reproduced freely by any enterprise.
The TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) is iterative and linked back to the
original requirements.
A significant addition to the TOGAF 9 specification is the Architecture Content Framework
(ACF).
The ADM describes what needs to be done to create an architecture and the ACF
describes what the architecture should look like once it is done.
The ADM can be regarded as a process lifecycle that operates at multiple levels within
the organization, operating within a holistic governance framework and producing
aligned outputs that reside in an Architecture Repository.
The Enterprise Continuum is a view of the Architecture Repository that provides methods
for classifying architecture and solution artefacts as they evolve from generic Foundation
Architectures to Organization-Specific Architectures.
It is increasingly recognized that a successful enterprise architecture practice must sit on
a firm operational footing.

vocabulary.

Why do I need a framework for enterprise architecture?

• Using an architecture framework will speed up and simplify architecture development, ensure
more complete coverage of the designed solution, and make certain that the architecture selected
allows for future growth in response to the needs of the business.
• Architecture design is a technically complex process, and the design of heterogeneous, multi-
vendor architectures is particularly complex. TOGAF plays an important role in helping to
‘‘demystify’’ the architecture development process, enabling IT users to build genuinely open
systems-based solutions to their business needs.

TOGAF 9 Overview
TOGAF History and Ownership
“The Open Group is a vendor-neutral and technology-neutral
consortium, whose vision of Boundaryless Information Flow™
will enable access to integrated information, within and among enterprises,
www.theopengroup.org based on open standards and global interoperability.”

TOGAF is developed and maintained by members of The Open Group,

working within the Architecture Forum.
The original development of TOGAF Version 1 in 1995 was based on the
Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM),
developed by the US Department of Defense (DoD).
Starting from this sound foundation The Open Group Architecture Forum
have developed successive versions of TOGAF and published each one on The
Open Group public web site.
TOGAF 9 is the latest version of the TOGAF specification, with enhancements
for usability, holistic enterprise change, and consistency of output.

TOGAF is published by The Open Group on its public web site, and may be reproduced freely by
any enterprise wishing to use it to develop an enterprise architecture for use within that
enterprise.

TOGAF 9 Overview
Architecture Content Framework (ACF)
The TOGAF Architecture
Content Framework provides a
structural model for
architectural content that allows
the major work products that an
architect creates to be
consistently defined, structured,
and presented.
There are four architecture
domains that are commonly
accepted as subsets of an
overall enterprise architecture,
all of which TOGAF is designed
to support:
Business Architecture
Data Architecture
Application Architecture
Technology Architecture

The content framework should be used as a companion to the ADM.

The ADM describes what needs to be done to create an architecture and the content framework
describes what the architecture should look like once it is done.

In this context, the TOGAF ADM can be regarded as a process lifecycle that operates at multiple levels
within the organization, operating within a holistic governance framework and producing aligned
outputs that reside in an Architecture Repository.

TOGAF 9 Overview
Enterprise Continuum
The simplest way of thinking of
the Enterprise Continuum is as a
view of the repository of all the
architecture assets. It can contain
architecture descriptions, models,
building blocks, patterns,
viewpoints, and other artefacts —
that exist both within the
enterprise and in the IT industry
at large, which the enterprise
considers to have available for the
development of architectures for
the enterprise.
The Enterprise Continuum is
partitioned into three distinct
continua as follows:
Enterprise Continuum
Architecture Continuum
Solutions Continuum

The Enterprise Continuum is a view of the Architecture Repository that provides methods for
classifying architecture and solution artefacts as they evolve from generic Foundation
Architectures to Organization-Specific Architectures.
