ECE 330 homework assignment #3, due in mid-term exam

Problem 1

A coil of 180 turns is wound uniformly over a wooden ring having a mean circumference of
700 mm, and a uniform cross sectional area of 400 mm2. If the current through the coil is 6 A:

a) the magnetic field strength

b) the flux density, and
c) the total flux

Problem 2

A mild steel ring having a cross sectional area of 600 mm2 and a mean circumference of 500 mm
has a coil of 220 turns wound uniformly around it. Given that r is about 420.

a) the reluctance of the ring

b) the self inductance of the coil, and
c) the current required to produce a flux of 900 Wb in the ring. (Given that r is about 420).

Problem 3

Fig. 3 shows an iron circuit with a small air gap. A 7000-turn

coil carries a current I = 25 mA which sets up a flux within I
the iron and across the air gap. If the iron cross section is
0.8×10-4 m2, the mean length of flux path in iron is 0.16 m, N = 7000
r = 780, and air gap length is 0.8 mm. Ignore fringing.
Calculate the air gap flux density and the self inductance of
the coil. Fig. 3

Problem 6

For the magnetic circuit in Fig. 1 below, the upper part with winding is fixed, and the lower part is
movable (up and down only). Take into account the effect of fringing in the air gaps, and core
reluctance (the mean length of flux path in iron core is lc).
a) Find the expressions for flux linkage, energy, and force of electric origin.
b) Calculate the force for the following condition: N = 300, i = 7 A, a = 3 cm, d = 2 cm, lc = 40 cm,
g = 0.5 cm, and the relative permeability of the iron core is r = 1500.

Problem 7
For the structure drawn in Fig. 2 below, the movable member is constrained to move left and right
only as indicated in the figure where “x” is the distance to the right edge of the movable member.
The large member with the coil is fixed, and the depth into the page for both members is 2 cm. The
gap g is 2 mm, and the number of turns N = 200. Neglect fringing in the gaps, and core reluctance.
a) Find the expressions for the flux linkage, energy, co-energy, and force of electric origin.
b) Calculate the force with i = 10 A, x = 5 cm (maximum value of x is 8 cm).
