TASK 1

ROMEO CABRERA JR.

1. LOOK UP AND EXAMINE THE KIDS OF ESP TAUGHT IN OUR

COUNTRY. AMONG THE THREE MAIN REASONS THAT GAVE BIRTH
ESP AS CITED BY HUTCHINSON AND WATERS (1987), WHICH DO YOU
THINK THE MOST PREVALENT IN THE NATURE OF ESP THOUGHT
HERE?
Learning Purpose: The ESP student has a specific learning purpose and focus.
Languages are learned when people have opportunities to understand and
work with language in contexts that they understand and find interesting. Such
opportunities are made possible by ESP. Students will learn English as they
work with materials that they find interesting and relevant to their professional
work or further studies. Successful learners focus on the meaning of the
language they hear or read rather than the linguistic input or isolated language
structures. The ESP student is predisposed to concentrate on meaning in the
subject-matter field. English should not be presented in ESP as a subject or
body of facts to be learned apart from real-world application, nor as a
mechanical skill or habit to be developed. Instead, English should be taught in
authentic contexts to familiarize students with the specific ways the language
is used in functions that they will need to perform in their specialty fields.

2. “TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED ENGLISH FOR AND I WILL TELL YOU
THE ENGLISH THAT YOU NEED”. HOW JUSTIFIABLE DO YOU THINK
THIS CLAIM IS FOR ESP?
This claim is one of the guiding principles of ESP. This principle suggests that
ESP is an approach to language teaching geared towards meeting the needs of
learners. We all know that English is a language which is universal. It is used
in all parts of the world. It requires perfect learning and understanding so that
it is possible to mitigate global contact for better communication in the world.
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an inapplicable title. There is but one
purpose for language to interact. ESP is a learning shortcut technique, which
is, learning only part of the language. But it’s what everyone does. Nobody
knows all about English.

3. “THE CLEAR RELEVANCE OF ENGLISH COURSE TO THEIR NEEDS

WOULD IMPROVE THE LEARNER’S MOTIVATION AND THEREBY
MAKE LEARNING BETTER AND FASTER?
(A) GIVE THREE WAYS IN WHICH RELEVANCE CAN BE ACHIEVED.
These are the three ways that relevance can be achieved:

expansion of demand to meet specific needs

linguistic development
educational psychology

The need for improved specialization in language learning seemed to point to all
three variables.

(B) IN WHAT WAYS CAN MOTIVATION AFFECT LANGUAGE

LEARNING?
Learners have varying needs and interests, which influence their motivation to
learn. Language learners can achieve success by setting their own goals and
directing their studies toward their own aspirations. Students can help
themselves achieve their goals by identifying their own language needs and
deciding why they want to learn the language. It increases motivation to have
goals and aspirations, which leads to a higher level of language competence.
