DRUG ABUSE

The speaker enlightened the audience with the adverse effects of drug addiction to one’s health pointing
that not only through drugs would one destroy oneself but also through addiction towards alcohol and
smoking. The damage will take its toll on the person physically and mentally, and breaking off from the
addiction will most likely bring withdrawal symptoms and if not treated will result to mental disorders,
she added. She emphasized that there is no cure for drug addiction saying that one can stop but can still
experience its aftermath from time to time.

In our last symposium, I learned a lot of things most especially about illegal drugs and its effects. It really
made me think that illegal drugs were something we should avoid and something that we should not try.
It’s no good and it’s one way to destroy someone’s life. Illegal drugs are very rampant nowadays and we
should really be aware of it because it may cause harm to everyone and there’s no exemptions to it. I
believe that it is necessary to show the public just how harmful illicit drugs are and can be. Drug
addiction is a chronic disease, so therefore it cannot be cured, but it can in fact be treated. Support
groups and Anti-drug programs are good ways to help-out relapsing addicts, and young individuals. The
information that I have discovered is not necessarily correct or incorrect, as what goes through an
addict’s mind can only be interpreted by the addict himself.

It was very interesting to learn about the different struggles that people all over the world have relating
to drugs, such as production, addiction, and recovery. I have seen how drugs affect people’s lives and I
have seen it in many friends and/or families whether it was directly or I just know of people who have
suffered with those things and I have seen the turmoil, anger, and heartache that people struggle with on
the side of the abuser and their loved ones. I feel that drugs, alcohol, and any substance that is commonly
abused like that should be focused on more in school because I personally have seen how these
substances have ruined and/or ended innocent lives and it is so heartbreaking to see because it addiction
really is an illness and it is especially hard when you know someone who is dealing with someone that is
addicted to substances or when you are dealing with it with one of your own friends or family members
and it really affects more lives than you think.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

Last September 03,2022, we attended it by simply listening first to our moderator-trying to

internalize all the tactics then some of my classmates, they generalized and gave their different
views and opinions regarding to that. During the DRRM symposium, I learned that disaster is
different from hazards. Hazards are always present in a community; however, hazards become
disasters whenever care and precaution are not taken and considered.

I learned that DRRM programs can offer safe refuge during disasters, reach a wide constituency
(including children, parents, teachers, community elders and local and national authorities),
mobilize people for action, and improve lives and livelihoods. The symposium also recognized
both children’s particular vulnerability to disasters, and their great potential to act as agents of
change for DRRM initiatives at community level. Preparedness and resiliency- a comprehensive
training and solutions center for all first responders and emergency response officials from all
emergency support functions and emergency response disciplines. We need to provide an
integrated approach to planning, training, and exercising for large-scale emergencies and
disasters.

As a student, my aim is to reduce, or avoid, the potential losses from hazards, assure prompt and
appropriate assistance to victims of disaster, and achieve rapid and effective recovery. The
Disaster management phase illustrates the process by which governments, businesses, and civil
society plan for and reduce the impact of disasters, react during and immediately following a
disaster, and take steps to recover after a disaster has occurred. Appropriate actions at all points
in the phases lead to greater preparedness, better warnings, reduced vulnerability or the
prevention of disasters during the next iteration of the cycle.

For the conclusion, we have to be knowledgeable about everything what’s surrounds us. Be alert,
be prepared, and be safe because our country’s geographical area is within the Pacific Ring of
Fire wherein many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur often. Attending this kind of
seminar woke me from a deep slumber because I realized that I shouldn’t rely much on the help
of other people because a person must save his self/herself first before he/she can save other
people. I should know what are the proper ways and tips when dealing with natural disasters. I
realized that it is very important to assess the hazards and vulnerabilities of your community in order to
be equipped for the future disasters that we can possibly encounter. Since we also discover our capacities,
we can be able to make use of the knowledge we have attained to it in order to use these strengths
against our weaknesses and improve it more.
