The environment plays a significant role to support life on earth. It is related to not
only environment but with everyone that lives on the planet. The everyday activities of
humans are constantly degrading the quality of the environment which ultimately results in the
loss of survival condition from the earth. Nevertheless, humans are the main managers of the
environment with the ability and expertise to manage the environment and utilize the existing
resources on an ongoing basis. Students in universities being an important part of responses to
reduce environmental problems and bear profound responsibilities to increase the awareness to
create an environmentally sustainable future. The study focuses on naturalistic intelligence from
one of the Multiple Intelligences Theory by Howard Gardner. Environmental awareness among
students is important to be implemented from the education gained by preserving the
environment and the resources existing on earth [5]. The less maximal behavior and
environmental awareness on students are likely to occur because of the differences in students’
cognitive abilities. This is explained by Gardner as a difference in human intelligence known
as multiple intelligence. Naturalistic intelligence is a new addition that meets the criteria as an
intelligence. It is a skill that a person possesses in recognizing and classifying various species
found in the environment.
Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the naturalistic intelligence contributes to the
positive attitudes and behaviors towards the environment. Further, analysis needs to be carried
out about the relationship between naturalistic intelligence and environmental awareness
among students in dealing with environmental problems. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure

Ecological literacy is the ability to understand the natural system that is related to our
life. It is a way of thinking about the world in terms of interactions within natural systems
including a consideration of the consequences of human actions. An ecological literacy equips
students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to address solution of environmental
issues in an integrated way. The study is an interview session to explore the ecological literacy
among secondary school students. The instruments used to probe students’ ecological literacy are

several pictures about the environment around them. Connecting students to natural systems
provides them with a deep sense of surrounding and understanding of their local environment. The
findings revealed that students’ ecological literacy is limited. They cannot relate what they learn in
class with their surroundings. It also suggests future study directed towards enhancing students’
ecological literacy.

This research talks about Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligence theory that includes
Naturalistic intelligence. It states here that individuals with high NI are likely to do well in diverse
nature related careers and can contribute towards sustainable management and conservation of
nature. Intelligence is a bio-psychological potential for processing information that can be
activated in a cultural environment to solve problems or create cultural valued products.
Naturalistic intelligence is selected because it becomes one of the dominant intelligences in a
person who focuses on understanding the environment. A person who understands nature
should have a developed naturalistic intelligence because they are in a place surrounded by
natural experts and often engaged in direct interaction with them. It becomes a factor that will
increase their knowledge of nature and develop their naturalist intelligence. Naturalistic
intelligence is the ability to understand the natural environment well, can create other
consequential distinctions in the nature of nature; the ability to understand and enjoy nature,
and use that ability productively [8]. Naturalistic intelligence is defined as the expertise in
identifying and classifying various species that exist in the individual’s environment, it also
includes sensitivity to other natural phenomena.

The Environmental issues are major global problem of important concern. Due to
increasing human population and developments in every sector, the environmental related issues
are multiplying in the recent years with a diversity of problems focusing the ultimate need for
alternative sustainable technologies to safeguard our mother nature. The human’s desire to modern
technologies and changing life style patterns pose serious threat on the environment and due to the
fact, the pollution levels are alarming day by day. In order to achieve the sustainable and equitable
developments, it is so significant to choose policies and programme that support efficient use of
resources and implement technologies which show the way to reduce the environmental damage,
thus result in sustainable development.
There is a dire need of environmental awareness on every aspects of the environment
and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity so as to produce socially responsible
citizens of the tomorrow. Creating better environmental practices among the school students is
one of such initiative to achieve environmental protection by inculcating moral values and

sustainable practices among them to develop as role model in the society.

Individuals who are less aware of the environment causes environmental problems. The
effort to improve the responsible environmental behavior needs to be done due to the continuous
increasing number of environmental problems. Having this behavior makes an invidual more
responsible for the environment. Students who are responsible in the environment are capable of
minimizing environmental damage. Naturalist Intelligence corresponds with responsible
environmental behavior. The naturalist Intelligence owned by students supports the students'
awareness to be responsible for environmental condition. Therefore, students can solve
environmental problems, specially those students who have good naturalist intelligence for they
can increase their sense of responsibility towards the environment and they have the ability to
interact with their environmental conditions.
