PERFORMANCE TASK 2

A. INTRODUCTION

FREE FALL MOTION

One equation describing the motion of a body starting from rest and undergoing constant
acceleration can be expressed as: d=½at²

Where d is the distance the object has traveled from its starting point, a is the acceleration
of the object, and t is the time elapsed since the motion began.

Therefore, the acceleration is equal to the distance doubled, divided by the time squared,
or: a=2d/t².

Since free fall is an example of uniformly accelerated motion, the equation a=2d/t² can be
translated as g=2Y/t². Where Y is the height an object will travel during the vertical motion.

If the acceleration is constant, what is the value of the acceleration? Is it the same for all objects
or does it vary with mass, size, or with some other property of the object? If it is not constant, how
does it vary with time?

B. MATERIALS
• • small and big marble • ruler/meter stick/tape measure
• ping pong ball tennis • timer/smartphone
ball

C. PROCEDURES
1. Determine the standard mass and diameter of the different balls. If you have resources,
you may measure it manually or if not, you may search the internet for the standard
dimensions and mass of the objects. For reference, you may write your answers in the
first table.
2. Measure a height of 2 m from the bottom of the ball to the floor.
3. Release the small marble at this height. Measure the time it takes the ball to reach the
bottom. You may ask assistance from someone in your household. Do this for 3 trials.
**Practice dropping the ball a few times before taking data. It is important that the balls
are not attached to the wall when dropping. Drop it at least 5 inches from the wall.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using a height of 1.5 and 1 m.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 2 using a bigger marble. Then, using a pingpong ball and a tennis
ball.
6. Compare the computed average value of the acceleration due to gravity with its
accepted value of 9.8 m/s2 by computing for the percentage error using the equation
below.
%error = accepted

Compare the values of ‘g’ in small marble and big marble; and explain briefly the
similarity/difference in the values:
-Based on the formula that is given to us the acceleration due to gravity does not affect mass but
based on my observation the more heavy the object is the more how fast it falls to the ground thus
I have this result that the big marble falls more quickly than the small marble to the ground and this
will give me a conclusion that light objects accelerates more slowly than heavy objects because
light objects takes more time to fall to the ground than heavy objects. In my observation as time
decreases the acceleration of the objects increases and as height decreases the acceleration
increases. I noticed also that every time that height increase the acceleration decrease due to
gravity for both big marble and small marble.

Compare the values of ‘g’ obtained in using ping pong ball and tennis ball; and explain briefly
the similarity/difference in the values:
-We know that tennis ball is heavier that ping pong ball as a result tennis ball falls faster than the
ping pong ball to the ground. I observe that, tennis ball have higher acceleration than the ping
pong ball that is because of the height and the time of an object that occur. This will give me an
idea that heavy objects falls faster than lighter objects to the ground thus this will show that the time
that it took in that situation may have differences that gives me a conclusion that it takes longer for
the object to fall because of increasing height and as a result of course when objects fall to the
ground, gravity cause them to accelerate that the height and the time occur. As depth and time
increases, the value of acceleration due to gravity falls. So that’s why the value of the tennis ball
have higher acceleration than ping pong ball
