Activity no. 4

Accelerated Motion

A. Objectives
To measure the acceleration of a ball/toy car rolling down an inclined plane.

B. Materials
✔ Meter stick
✔ Watch that indicates the number of seconds
✔ Small ball/toy car
✔ Inclined plane

C. Experimental Set-up
D. Procedure
1. Set up the inclined plane at an angle just enough to let the ball roll down in 4 seconds.
2. Place the small ball or the toy car at the top of the plane and let it roll down freely. Watch its motion
carefully. Is there an increase in its velocity as it goes down the plane?
3. Repeat the step 2 and determine the location of the ball at the end of 1 second, 2 seconds and 3
seconds. Mark these points.
4. Make several trials until you are sure that the position of the ball is marked correctly at the end of
each interval.
5. Measure the total displacement of the ball in meters after 1 s, 2 s, and 3 s.
6. Determine the velocity of the ball at the end of each second using the equation v = ∆d ∆t .

∆v
7. Compute for the acceleration of the ball in each second using the formula a = ∆t .

E. Data and Results

Time Interval Total Displacement Velocity Acceleration
(s) (m) (m/s) (m/s²)
1 second 1.12 m 1.12 m/s 1.12 m/s²
2 seconds 0.80 m 0.4 m/s 0.2 m/s²
3 seconds 0.65 m 0.22 m/s 0.07 m/s²

F. Computations for velocity and acceleration

VELOCITY: v = d / t
1.12 m / 1 s = 1.12 m/s
0.80 m / 2 s = 0.4 m/s
0.65 m / 3 s = 0.22 m/s

ACCELERATION: a = v / t
1.12 m/s / 1 s = 1.12 m/s²
0.4 m/s / 2 s = 0.2 m/s²
0.22 m/s / 3 s = 0.07 m/s²
G. Generalization
Acceleration is a quantity of vectors that is defined as the rate at which an object changes its speed. An
object accelerates if its velocity is changed. Even if the velocity is constant, motion on a circle is
accelerated since the direction is changing continuously. Both effects contribute to the acceleration of all
other kinds of motion.
H. Application
1. Can object’s speed increase if its acceleration decrease? Explain.

Yes it can. Acceleration determines whether an object will either slow down or speed up. There are even
some cases where the speed does not change at all. It is not just about speeding up, it takes place if the
speed of an object rises or decreases, or it changes direction. It’s because acceleration relies on a
vector quantity, one with both magnitude and direction, for the change in velocity and velocity.

2. Can an object have constant velocity and still have varying speed? Explain.

No. Because speed is a scalar quantity while velocity is a vector quantity.
