Activity 4. “MOTION IN EQUATIONS”

Objectives:
1. Calculate the velocity of a moving body.
2. Determine the acceleration of a moving body.
3. Solve word problems related to uniformly accelerated motion and free - falling body.

Part I. Complete the tables below showing the distance and time travelled of two runners by
calculating velocity and acceleration.

Runner 1

DISTANCE (m) TIME (s) VELOCITY (m/s) ACCELERATION (m/s2)

d1 = 15 8.5 s 1.76 m/s 0.21 m/s2

d2 = 30 17.2 s 1.74 m/s 0.10 m/s2

d3 = 45 23.8 s 1.89 m/s 0.08 m/s2

Runner 2
DISTANCE (m) TIME (s) VELOCITY (m/s) ACCELERATION (m/s2)
d1 = 15 7.1 s 2.11 m/s 0.30 m/s2

d2 = 30 16.9 s 1.78 m/s 0.11 m/s2

d3 = 45 22.4 s 2.01 m/s 0.09 m/s2

Guide Questions:
1. What do the differences in the recorded time of runners indicate?
➜ The differences in the recorded times of runners indicate the change in time. For instance, velocity is
the rate of change of an object's position with respect to its original position. The runners' acceleration
is based on the change in their velocities over a period of time.

2. What happens when the runners change his velocity?

➜ When the runners change their velocity, there is a change in speed and direction. The runners
accelerate or decelerate.

3. Are velocity and acceleration the same? Explain.

➜ No, because velocity is the change in displacement over a period of time, while acceleration is the
change in velocity over time. However, both of them are vector quantities. In addition, velocity affects
the object's acceleration because if the velocity speeds up, acceleration will occur.

Part II. Solve the following word problems using equations of UAM and free fall.
1. A baseball has an acceleration of 0.5 m/s2. If it covered a distance of 10 m, starting from rest, what is
its velocity? How much time is needed for this change in velocity?
2. A bus is moving at 15 m/s slows down at 1.5 m/s 2 to a velocity of 10 m/s. How far did the bus go
during the slow down?

3. Nikki drops her doll from the rooftop 10 m above the ground. Neglecting air resistance, how long it
will take to reach the ground?

What I have learned?

Activity 5: “PHYSICS IN ACTION”

1. How will the knowledge of Kinematics help you in supporting defensive driving?
➜ Kinematics has real-world applications in many facets of our lives, such as driving or riding in
automobiles. Kinematics is a branch of mathematics that studies the relationship between physical and
mechanical forces. On the other hand, this understanding of kinematics will help in my defensive driving
by allowing me to create equations that will be useful throughout my driving. Knowing what speed to
drive at, for example, will make me safer on the road. That is one example of how kinematics can be
applied, and it can also be used in a variety of other situations, including astrophysics, which is used to
describe the motion of celestial bodies and systems.

2. Using what you know on free fall, express your idea on this topic “Don’t Fire Guns in the Air”.

➜ In physics, free fall refers to the state of an object moving freely in any direction in the presence of
gravity. As a result, the preceding quotation must be remembered. When it comes to guns, we should
be accountable for whatever we do. It would be extremely dangerous to do so while firing guns into the
air. Even if you theorize that nobody will be harmed by it, you can't be sure how long it will take in the
air to fall due to the presence of gravity. Regarding this, a lot of news has been reported because of the
people who died because of those nowhere to be found bullets.

Activity 6: EXPERIMENT TIME!

Objectives:
1. Define free fall.
2. Demonstrate and describe the motion of a free - falling body.
