The strength classes are used to specify the basic compressive stresses for masonry to DIN 1053-1, where these are to be established by suitability testing. NOTE: The design and construction of suitability tested masonry is dealt with in DIN 1053-1. 2 Normative references “This standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These norma- tive references are cited at the appropriate placesin the text, and the titles of the publications are listed below. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the publication referred to applies. DIN 1053-1 Masonry - Design and construction DIN 18854-1 Testing of masonry ~ Determination of compressive strength and elastic modulus 3 Concept Masonry strength classes on the basis of suitability testing are a means by which to represent the compressive strength of masonry as established by suitabllity testing. 4 Principle Masonry strength is classified on the basis of the criteria given in subclause 6.4 and table 1 following the testing of specimens to DIN 18554-1 with a view to determining their compressive strength. The strength class is then stated In a cartficate of classification, as specified in subclause 6.4. 5 Materials 5.1. Masonry units ‘Masonry units shall conform to the standards specified in DIN 1053-1 and have the mean compressive strength stated in the certificate of classification. In adcition, when the compressive strength of the masonry unit is tested as specified in the relevant material standard, the coefficient of variation shall be not more than 15%. ‘The letters "EM" denoting suitability tested masonry units shall be included in the designation. 5.2, Mortar ‘The mortar used shall conform to DIN 1053-1. Use of group I mortar is not permitted. 6 Suitability testing 6.1 Masonry units In order to be classified as suitability tested masonry units, these require testing on behalf of the manufacturer by a recognized testing laboratory, which may be an inspection body. Before a manufacturer submits masonry units for suitability testing, he shall first check the records from previous tests carried out as part of his own factory production control to ensure that his production is of consistent quality. The units used for suitability testing shall be taken from the part of range with a relatively low compressive strength, Masonry units shall be tested in accordance with the relevant material standards and, where required, the results of testing given in a certificate of classification (cf. subclause 6.4). 6.2. Mortar Mortar shall comply with the specifications of DIN 1053-1. 6.3. Masonry For strength classification of masonry, this shall be tested to DIN 18554~1 on behalf of the manufacturer by a recognized testing laboratory, using as specimens units and mortar to subclauses 6.1 and 6.2. Suitability testing shall be repeated if there Is a change in perforation profile or if changes in the constituent materials or production methods are likely to affect the strength of the masonry. ‘Asa departure from the specifications of DIN 1854-1, the masonry specimens shall generally feature bonds other than pure stretcher or header bonds, and shall be 240 mm, 300 mm or 365 mm in thickness, unless only stretcher or header bonds are possible due to the size of the units. Page 3 DIN 1053-2 : 1996-11 6.4 Strength classification ‘On the basis of the test results, the masonry shall be assigned to the appropriate strength class from table 1 and a certificate of classification issued (a specimen of which is given in the appendix). The certificate shall be valid for five years, after which suitability testing (see subclause 6.3) is to be repeated. if masonry has been tested with a pure stretcher or header bond, but other types of bonding would in fact be possible, a margin shall be included, in which case the minimum individual and mean values given in table 1 shall be increased by 15%. Page 4 DIN 1053-2: 1996-11 ‘The strength classes established on the basis of this standard shall be not more than 50% higher than that ‘which would be achieved by the corresponding masonry of simplified design to DIN 1053-1. The certificate of classification shall be issued by @ recognized body. It shell state the relevant masonry class and the type of bond, in particular whether this Is a pure stretcher or header bond. The certificate shall Include ‘the information given in the appendix. if masonry is to be built using a mortar other than stated in the certificate but of the same type and group, it shall be tested for suitability and its use permitted provided that its performance Is not inferior to that of the mortar indicated in the certificate. 7 Inspection 7.1. Masonry units Inspection according to this standard differs from that specified in the relevant material standards in requiring that, as part of factory production control, for every 500 m® of units produced, but at least per week of produc- tion, six specimens shall be taken at regular intervals throughout the control period, their compressive strength determined, and the mean and coefficient of variation calculated. The coefficient of variation shall be not more than 15%, and the mean compressive strength shall be not lass than that determined in the suitability test. The results shall be recorded, evaluated, and retained for a period of at least five years. Third-party inspection shall be undertaken to check the factory production control and determine the compres- sive strength and coefficient of variation on the basis of at least six specimens. 7.2 Mortar See DIN 1053-1 ‘The note in the margin on page 1 prohibiting reproduction of any part of the standard does not apply to the following specimen form.
