A. Introduction / Panimula Nail care is the fingernail and toenail maintenance that is important
both for health and for cosmetic reasons. Good nail care can prevent nail
fungal infections, painful fingernail and toenail infections, and skin infections
in the hands and feet. You can prevent calluses, foot athletes, and other
complications by taking good care of your feet and toenails. Furthermore,
this service includes manicure, pedicure, hand, and foot spa. A manicure is
a fingernail and hand beauty treatment that can be practiced at home or
at a spa. The manicure involves filing and shaping the nails and massaging
the hands. Likewise, pedicure is a foot and leg beauty treatment you can
also practice at home pedicure or take advantage of this beauty treatment
in a spa.
You will be provided with the essential knowledge in preparing the
necessary tools and equipment used for specific nail care activities in this
lesson. After going through the learning activities, you will be able to:
1. Identify the uses of tools and equipment according to task requirements.
2. Use the tools and equipment according to task requirements.
3. Observe the safety procedures in using nail care tools and equipment.

Hi! I am teacher Salie and I will be your teacher for Exploratory
Course in Nail Care Services. Let me first define Tools which
are known as the articles used in any nail care service which
are considered hand-held that are also referred to as
implements. These are the preliminary terms you need remember in nail care
services. Now, are you ready to find out the different tasks in nail care services
and the appropriate tool and equipment used to accomplish each task?
Let us do a remote role playing, I am a salon trainer, and you are the
newly hired nail care technician. I will orient you on the different nail care
tasks and the appropriate tools used to accomplish each task. Before we
start, let me first discuss the different paraphernalia used in nail care services.
Let us begin by reading over the table below:
se of the Paraphernalia Paraphernalia

First, you need to prepare the tools and

implements in an organized manner by using
a manicure tray.

Aside from a manicure tray, you can use a

supply tray to hold necessary cosmetics and
implements.

For the cotton balls to be kept properly, a

plastic container for Cotton is utilized.

When transporting manicure and pedicure

tool and materials you will use a trolley which
a wheeled cart that is pushed by hand.

After reading the table, I want you to answer the following questions in a
separate sheet of paper and consult the elders in your house to verify your
answers:
1. What paraphernalia are present in your house?
2. From the given pictures, how are you going to define paraphernalia in your
own words?
3. What are the importance of paraphernalia in nail care services?

Now that you are familiar with the different paraphernalia, as a

nail care technician you must be knowledgeable with the various
tasks and the tools required to accomplish each activity in nail
care services. Let us continue our orientation by reading over the table I
prepared below. You can ask assistance from the elders in your home to
recognize each tool that is available inside your household.

Tools Used according to

Nail Care Tasks
Task requirement

Before you conduct nail care services

such as nail and foot spa, you need to
prepare and mix the aromatic oils and
other fluids in a mixing bowl.

Before starting a manicure service, you

need to soak fingers to soften cuticles in a
manicure bowl.
If you are going to push back and loosen
cuticles you will use a cuticle nail pusher.

When you need to cut a cuticle, you must

use a cuticle nipper.

If the cuticle is not removed by a cuticle

nipper, that cuticle is referred as a stubborn
cuticle that requires a cuticle scissors.

To cut or trim fingernails and toenails you

will use a nail cutter / nail clipper / nail
trimmer which is a hand tool made of
metal.

Now, to shape the free edges of the nail

you need to use the coarse side of the nail
file while to bevel the nail use its finer side.

To smoothen and polishing the nails you

must use an implement called nail buffer.

When you need to clean dirt and cosmetic

residue from the nail surface and skin you
are going to use a manicure nail brush.

After applying a nail polish, you must

remove its excess on the side of nails by
using an orangewood stick that is a tool
with pointed and rounded ends.

Before you execute a pedicure service you

will need a foot spa basin to bath and soak
the feet.

When you need to strip out calluses and

corns of hands and feet you will need a
callous remover.

As a nail care technician, you need to

ensure that dry and annoying skin in the
feet of your clients are removed
thoroughly by using a pumice stone.

After stripping the calluses and corns of the

feet use a foot file with a rough side to
remove calluses and fine file on the other
to smoothen the feet.

To remove the cosmetics and cleanse the

nails you must use a pedicure nail brush.
Now, I want you to answer the following questions in a sheet of
paper you used a while ago and consult the elders in your
household to verify your answers:
1. From the given pictures of tools, which are available in your
household?
2. As a nail care technician, why is it important that you are knowledgeable
on the uses of each tool?

Aside from the paraphernalia and tools, you need to be mindful with the
different equipment being utilized on the various tasks in performing nail care
services. I prepared a tabular form to show you the function of each
equipment. Let us begin by defining equipment. These are the items which
are durable and permanent needed for a particular activity or purpose.
Read over the table below for you to familiarize the equipment in nail care
services.

Equipment Function / Purpose

When performing nail care services, it is essential
you are comfortably sited in a chair with back
support which have four legs, and some have
rests for arms.
In performing foot spa, you need to use a foot
spa machine which is an electronic gadget
used for soaking, bathing and massaging the
feet.
To provide comfort and elevation to client
during a foot spa you must use a foot spa stool.

Along with hand spa, to soothe pain of arthritis,

muscle spasms and dry cracked skin of the
hands you will use a hand spa machine.

If chair is not available, you can use a

manicurist’s chair or stool.

To provide a comfortable manicure service

where all the tools and materials are stored
properly a manicure table shall be used.

After performing nail care services, sterilizer

must be used to kill microorganism in metal
implements as part of safety protocols.

After reading along with the equipment, I want you answer the following
questions in the same sheet of paper (at the back) you used a while ago
and consult the elders in your household to verify your answers:
1. Which of the equipment / s are you familiar with?
2. Why do you think that is it essential to understand the function of each
equipment?
You are doing good! Now that you are familiar on the
different tools and equipment as well as their uses, you must
also understand the use of Personal Protective Equipment
which are vital in performing nail care services to protect
you from the harmful effects of chemicals.

Personal Protective
Function
Equipment
You need to wear an impermeable glove
to prevent skin from absorbing potentially
harmful ingredients which may cause skin
allergies irritation or other problems.
When performing nail care services your
eyes must be protected by an eyewear
from potential harm.

Wear a splash proof apron to protect the

parts of the body from potential
hazardous materials.

To prevent breathing of air contaminated

with chemical you must always wear a
protective mask.

I hope that by the pictures provided in the table together with

the functions, you were able identify and understand Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE).
As we go further with our orientation, it is very important that you
have knowledge on the safety procedures in using tools and equipment.
So now, let me acquaint you with the description of safety procedures.
They are generally written methods outlining how to perform a task with
minimum risk to people, equipment, materials, environment, and
processes. The following are the safety procedures and practices in using
tools and equipment:

✓ You should always check any tool or equipment before use.

✓ If there is a broken or damage electrical equipment, DO NOT use it,
instead, put a tag that must warn people not to use the equipment.
✓ You should not touch equipment with wet hands.
✓ Do not use a wet cloth to clean sockets.
✓ Clean-up spills straight away.
✓ Use mats on slippery floors.
✓ Store tools and equipment on a covered container or storage in a clean,
dry and dust free environment.
✓ Always use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Good job! You successfully finished our virtual role playing, I hope
that you learned and acquired the necessary knowledge on the
tools and equipment used in a required task in nail care services.
In addition to the safety procedures, you must have in mind the safety
protocols in this time of pandemic. Social distancing, wearing of face shield
and mask must always be observed. Likewise, washing of hands and using
alcohol and sanitizers are great agents to prevent the spread of Corona virus.
I believe that you are now ready to move forward and use the tools and
equipment according to task requirement while observing the safety
procedures. I have prepared learning tasks that will surely help you to
achieve your targets in this lesson. Good luck and keep going!

III. LEARNING PHASES Suggested Learning Activities

Timeframe
A. Introduction / Panimula
Having the adequate knowledge about tools and equipment is
essential in nail care services for they are the foundation in performing
different nail care tasks. On the previous weeks you were given
developmental activities and learning tasks to be able to identify, use and
observe safety procedures of using tools and equipment according to task
requirements. This week, you will be acquainted with preventive and
corrective maintenance of nail care tools and equipment that is equally
important in nail care services.
Preventive maintenance is a strategy that is carried out in a regular
basis which means that all tools and equipment is inspected regularly even
if there is no sign of failure. By doing so, any tool and equipment failure is
avoided and prevented to make sure that they are functioning well and
safe to use. This maintenance routine requires a maintenance plan to ensure
4 Days
reliability of tools and equipment in terms of performance and safety of the
people.

On the other hand, corrective maintenance is a set of technical tasks

which are designed to repair tools and equipment as there is a need to fix
or even replace them. This kind maintenance is used to correct errors which
needs to be repaired to restore its function. It does not require a
maintenance plan because the problem should be solved immediately
since failure is not predicted. This means that this type of maintenance is only
performed when there is failure and malfunction.

Therefore, after going through the learning activities in this lesson you
will be able to perform basic preventive and corrective maintenance of nail
care tools and equipment. Specifically, you will be able to perform the
following tasks:

1. Clean tools according to standard procedures.

2. Inspect defective tools and equipment.
Hello, I am very excited for this 2-week activities because I invited
a nail care technician friend named Louis from a renowned
salon in our community. He will help you in performing
preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools and
equipment.

Hi there, I am Louis, and I have been a nail care technician for two
years. I will provide you the appropriate knowledge and skills in
performing preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care
tools and equipment. Let us start with understanding the
difference between disinfection, sanitation, and sterilization so as
with the distinction of antiseptics and disinfectants.

Sir Louis, let me enlighten them with the differences of those 3

important terms. To avoid the spread of contagious germs, the
first and most critical step is to clean.

1. Cleaning is also known as sanitation. Both terms apply to

the elimination of visible pollution and debris, as well as a
substantial reduction in the number of germs on the
surface.
2. On the other hand, the destruction of viruses, bacteria,
and fungi on surfaces that have contacted a client's skin is known as
disinfection. When disinfected correctly, a surface is less likely to spread
infection or disease. Since disinfectants are harmful to skin and can cause
irritation or allergic reactions, disinfectants are only used on non-living
surfaces.

Fig. 1. “Disinfection Icon” by Gan Khoon Lay is Licensed under CC By 3.0

3. Alternatively, the absolute removal of all microscopic organisms on a
surface is referred to as sterilization. Surgical instruments are sterilized in
hospitals. Chemical sterilization is too dangerous for salons, however,
sterilization of nippers, files, and other tools using pressurized steam) is needed
in certain areas and preferred by some salons. Table tops and foot spas are
too large to fit into an autoclave and must be disinfected instead.

Fig. 2. “Sterilizer Icon” by Vector Point is Licensed under CC By 3.0

Thank you Mam Salie for explaining their differences as well as
their important roles in nail care services. Now, I want you to have
an initial idea about the roles of antiseptic and disinfectant in
cleaning. Antiseptics are drugs that are applied to living
organisms, such as human skin, to destroy any microorganisms that
may be found on the surface. Mouthwash and hand sanitizer are two
examples of antiseptics that are both safe to use on your skin while still being
highly effective at destroying large numbers of microorganisms.
Disinfectants are applied to non-living surfaces like countertops and
handrails to destroy the microorganisms that live there. Alcohols and bleach
are different forms of disinfectants. Before performing the standard cleaning
procedures, you must have the skills in preparing the needed materials. I
have prepared visual representations of the preparation for sanitation and
sterilization. I want you to read, analyze and understand the procedural
diagram below:
The Sanitizing Jar’s Preparation

Preparation of Equipment and Surface for Sanitation

Sterilization of Metal Implements

Bear in mind that all tools, implements, and equipment should not be used
until they have been properly sanitized or sterilized to avoid
diseases, and that all products on the trolley are neatly
arranged. Personal hygiene should be a priority for all
beauticians. Using disposable goods wherever possible is highly
recommended. The following diagram will help you to know and
perform cleaning of tools and equipment according to
standard procedures.

Clean Tools and Equipment According to Standard Procedures

You must always guarantee the client's protection and comfort

by using good working condition tools and equipment, as well as
supplying him or her with sufficient personal protective equipment.

Here are the standard procedures in keeping tool and equipment

clean, safe and functional.
Your main goal is to provide each customer with the best quality
nail care service possible, so all tools and equipment are
thoroughly examined to decide which ones are in good working
condition and which ones are not. That is why functional tools and
equipment are maintained in a secure manner in compliance
with salon and local health regulations. Non-functional or defective tools
and equipment are correctly isolated and numbered for repair or disposal.
You can use the following checklist form in reporting the condition of nail
care tools and equipment.

All you must do is to put a CHECK (/) in column if the

tool or equipment is FUNCTIONAL.
On the other hand, put a CHECK (/) in column if the
tool or equipment is DEFECTIVE.

I hope you learned the essential knowledge and skills in basic

preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools and
equipment. You are amazing! Now, you can move forward
with the learning tasks I have prepared for you! Good Luck!

The nail is a transparent platelike keratinous structure made up of highly
specialized epithelial cells. Your nails serve the following important
purposes:

• They support humans in their everyday activities. Nails are flat versions of
claws that aid humans in digging, climbing, scratching, grabbing, and other
activities.
• They protect you from getting hurt. They function as protective plates,
preventing cuts and scrapes on the fingers and toes during everyday
activities.
• They contribute to the experience. Nerve endings in the fingers and toes
allow the body to process the vast quantities of data obtained every time
something is touched, and the nail acts as a counterforce, providing even
more sensory feedback after a person touches something.
A regular quality nail care ensures that your nails remain healthy and capable
of performing their functions. Nails that are neat, trimmed, and well-cared for make
a statement about your health and appearance.
Nails are continually developing, but due to poor circulation and aging, their
rate of growth slows. Fingernails grow three millimeters per month faster than toenails.
A fingernail takes six months to develop from the root to the free tip. Toenails grow at
a much slower rate, measuring just 1 millimeter per month. From root to tip, a toenail
takes 12 to 18 months to develop.
Now, I want you to explore, analyze and understand the diagram of nail
structure below.

Fig. 1. Nail Structure

Nail Structure
The nail structure is mainly divided into parts such as root, nail bed, nail plate,
matrix, lunula, free edge, eponychium, nail walls, hyponychium, and nail fold. Each
of these components has a specific function that should not be interrupted to have
a normal appearance of nail. Read the content of the illustration below to
understand each part of the nail.

understanding regarding its functions that you can use whenever you will be
performing nail care services. Now, it is time for you to discover the different nail
shapes that you need to know as a nail care technician so that you can precisely
determine which style is best for your client. You will need to take into consideration
