Points to Ponder:

1. Why does unethical communication threaten the quality of all communication? Give
examples.

• Unethical communication is a type of communication that does not consider

the right doings at the same time during connections within a line or circle of
communication. It practices raw communication without politeness or
respect. So, why does unethical communication threaten the quality of all
communication? The main reason is the loss of genuine understanding within
it due to a lack of respect and consideration. In order for communication to be
effective and ensure a smooth flow between sender and receiver, both parties
should have a good understanding of and respect for each other for it to have
effective communication. Unethical behavior during the communication
process may cause conflict or misunderstanding, or it may worsen the
situation if the problem becomes more serious. An example of this is a scenario
inside an office between workers and managers.

Manager: Hey worker, What is the most important task for our group today? Can you
please remind everyone?

Worker: I don't want Mr. Manager, I have no time for that! Just assign another worker
for that! (shouting)

Manager: Why are you shouting at me? I'm your boss here, and you should follow my
commandments. I'm asking you politely, but you respond unethically!

Worker: (No comment)--

As we can see in the scenario, the manager approaches the worker politely,
but the worker responds negatively towards his manager. This shows that the worker
was unethically communicating with his manager. Therefore, it started a conflict
between the two individuals. Also, the ending of this scenario might be the firing of
the worker from his job due to the conflict he or she started by doing unethical
communication.
• Another example of unethical communication is when President Duterte
repeatedly says bad words during his speeches at various events. This may
cause conflict for some audiences watching or hearing his speech. Many people
will react negatively towards his mouth, and this will cause some of them to
be angry because saying bad words is unethical for everyone, especially if you
are a respected person. Also, people might lose some reliance from Duterte
because he is not ethical and formal when it comes to communicating to
public.

2. Why do you think people at times neglect the principles of ethical communication?
Give examples.

People sometimes neglect the principles of ethical communication for many

reasons. The first reason is the environment in which he/she lives. The way people
communicate reflects where they live. If this person is unethical when it comes to
communicating with others, maybe in his or her community or compound, it is
allowable and not immoral. Maybe, their parents are not teaching them ethics when
it comes to communication. I'm setting an example just like Ruel, a friend from
Calamba. The first time I met him, he was very rude and impolite when having a
conversation with me. He talks like a "mandarambong" or "Kalyeng asal". My mother
got furious when he talked with us. Because of his way of communicating, my mother
didn't want me to get along with him anymore, but fortunately, I converted him into
a better person with politeness and respect for others.
3. At present, what do you think is the most alarming problem about ethical communication?
Explain clearly your answer.

I believe the most alarming problem right now with ethical communication is
for younger groups of the population. Many of them right now are not communicating
ethically with their elders. Also, because of the influence of social media, many of our
youths are copying the other traditions and ways of "saying things" in other countries,
which are very different from ours. Then, many of them copy the bad influencers on
social media who practice unethical communication practices. Sometimes their
parents viewed the videos from social media, and their kids also watching it to the
point that these videos may have been copied by their kids. For example, one of my
cousins sometimes uses unethical communication with other people. This is because
she is always watching funny videos on social media that sometimes show unethical
communication between people, then she copies it, knowing that it is funny when she
communicates in that way. That's why we should take action against this growing
concern about our youth.
