Psychology of communication: Intro to human communica-

tion

- Communication begins in the context of relationships they can be formal and informal.
- The focus is on the student (CCA)= Classroom Communication Apprehension. CCA has sig-
nificant negative impacts who experience it and can identify yourself. More likely to sit in
places where they’ll hide and not to be seen, less likely to speak about themselves. When they
graduate they work in jobs they where they won’t interact a lot with others. Female experience
this more than male students. They feel more disciplined and feel more judged by others.

- Communication= empathy, effective listening, and turn taking. Broken down information, not
being distracted and the effect of noise on communication, monotonous voice. The receiver is
the target of the message.
- As society becomes diverse the likelihood that people share assumptions and value starts to di-
minish. Dialogues has opinions and open to for one another’s perspective and opinions.
- Communication at a national level. How to communicate with people but also how to commu-
nicate about people. Ways in which we comm about people can be harmful and abusive.
- Since he wasn’t famous so he intro himself. He’s down to earth. People who don’t move won’t
have an impact. They need to use body language more and move more for the msg to be effec-
tive. Repetition which is effective to enhance the effectiveness of the message. Communica-
tion needs to be effective and appropriate. If I’m giving talks to illiterate ppl one has to tailor
the presentation to be appropriate. Changing and modifying the message to meet the audi-
ences’ needs.
- Learn how to use the media critically and w awareness and who is influencing us. Learning
abt communication gives you the advantage to evaluate what you’re reading and hearing
about. Making sense of this info and bombarded with heaps of info. When u start being friends
you start disclosing with someone, you form a bond. Which ever word u prefer indicates your
values and considered non neutral. Multi culturalism. Giving us new experiences and new
ways of being.
- Becoming a better professional= most jobs require who can communicate effectively verbally
and non verbally. How you present yourself to your employees, superiors, subordinates, most

1
jobs requires to work in a team. Meaning can be misunderstood. One can smile but look un-
happy and confuse us.

- Components of communication: people shape the way in which we receive make sense of and
give out messages. Men are from mars and women from venus book= Highlighted differences
in males and females and why people experience problems in their relationships.

- Messages= facial expressions, bodily movements, physical contact, appropriateness of touch

and tone of voice.

- Codes= systematic arrangement of symbols used to create meanings in the mind of another
person. language is a verbal symbol system. Allows us to take in msgs in the form of words
and translate them into meaning. Non verbal includes bodily movements. Clothing and acces-
sories. Emojis are universally agreed symbol. Lang describe physical obj in our world like
mic, mouse, computer. Can describe emotional states.

- Channel= source to the receiver

- Feedback= can be verbal or non verbal. Can be pos or neg and it can be immediate or delayed.
Supportive or critical feedback. Silence is a form of feedback. There’s still communication in
that.

- Encoding and decoding= encoding= producing msgs, decoding= receiving msgs. meaning is
related to interpretation. In f2f interactions we perform encoding and decoding simultane-
ously. It helps to clarify and to see whether they re understanding or not.

- Noise= interference in encoding and decoding process. Reduces msg clarity. Different exs of
noise can be physical, visual noise like looking at a tattoo, spatial noise when someone moves
very close.

- Situation= where comm takes places, can be formal or informal. What is more personal f2f or
social media?
- Communication involves others= taking part in a conversation. How others will perceive the
message.

- Communication has a content and a relational dimension= is it mother son? Doctor patient?
Friend vs friend? Content of the message describes behaviour that is expected, relational mes-

2
sage is connected to how it should be interpreted. Content is the same but the relational dimen-
sion is different. Relational dimensional in which misunderstanding occur. relational dimen-
sion expresses how you feel about the other person. I'm busy tonight” in an annoyed tone ver-
sus “Sorry babe, I'm busy tonight” in an apologetic tone. Both messages mean the same thing
on the content dimension, but express different feelings on the relational dimension. content
dimension involves the information being explicitly discussed.

- Communication involves choices. Variables can have a strong influence.

- Communication quantity doesn’t increase communication quality= someone can talk for a
long time and you realise what they communicated is rubbish. Lack of empathy and lack of
listening can lead to misunderstandings.
- Communication is pervasive= planning noticing things.
- Factors that influence rel and communication= professional relationships, context surround-
ing , the time, the place, goals of the individuals.
- Exercise: no 1: False, no 2= False, no 3= True, no 4= True, no 5= F/T? , no 6= True, no 7=
False, no 8= False, no 9= False, n0 10= False
- Factors that influence relationships and communication; is it employee or employer. Lack of
understanding can prevent effective communication. How do we understand one another accu-
rately. You can repeat something that someone shared with u without having an idea of the
meaning. Communication cannot be reversed.
- Comm cannot be repeated= cannot recreate a conversation exactly as it was.
- Comm contexts= intrapersonal communication= self talk by thinking through a situation. Us-
ing msgs to generate meaning between 2 or more ppl. Dyadic comm= communication occurs
w 2 ppl.

- Public communication= transmits a msg to a no of ppl, msg has to be adapted to the audience.
Audience gives feedback. Msg that the source may be misunderstood, context is formal, struc-
tured and pre planned. To announce smth imp.

- Mass communication= process of generation meanings in a mediated system. Large no of un-

seen receivers. It’s linked to the diffusion of information. It has an impact on broadcasting.
Audience isn’t as unseen as it was before, one can share their opinion online whereas on the
actual newspaper one cannot do this.

3
- Digitally mediated communication = new communication technology email, twitter snapchat
etc. synchronous comm= in person conversations, phone calls, video meetings, real-time com-
munication, Asynchronous comm= comm that doesn t happen irl eliminating the need for an
immediate response like emails and chatting. delayed time comm by sending and receiving in-
teractions were there’s a small or a substantial delay. Messages could be disseminated quickly.
One of the issues is neg racists msgs, homophobic msgs, they can be disseminated amongst
heaps of ppl.

- Continuing bonds in the age of social networking= maintain a relationship with them in some
way. Distance between time and space. When smone dies on fb it becomes memorialised, it
can’t be changed and people who are friends can still post on their fb profile. Family members
can make a req to close that fb pg.

- goals of comm study= comm competence ,effective exchange meaning with diff ppl, w diff
context and different ways. How to comm with ppl in a way that is respectful and is not re-
spective. Non misleading and non deceptive. Unethical comm can be the toleration of….
- meaning of a symbol isn’t the same as sign.
- Communication and our social world= recreates our understanding … communication creates
reality.

- Comm is functional and comm is adaptive. It serves as a bad purpose. Comm is there to ac-
complish smth. Excessively conforming.when we conform to a context it can impose limita-
tions. Comm needs to be clear and understood. Ambiguous comm can have advantages. It can
enhance creativity.
