Background of the Study

In recent years, after schools opened back up for face-to-face classes, there has
been a noticeable decline in the level of voluntariness among Dalid Senior High School
learners towards participating in extracurricular activities. This trend is concerning as
extracurricular activities play an important role in the holistic development of learners,
enhancing their skills outside the field of academics. According to Mishra & Aithal
(2023) extracurricular activities make the learner mentally agile, participative,
3

responsive, confident, and independent. The problem that is to be addressed is the

identification of factors contributing to this lack of motivation and to develop strategies
to encourage more active participation in these activities. It is crucial to understand the
underlying reasons for this decline, whether it is due to increased academic pressure, lack
of interest, or other personal or institutional factors. The goal of this study is to establish a
more balanced and enriching school experience for learners, promoting both academic
excellence and personal growth.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the level of voluntariness of Dalid Senior High
Schools learners towards extracurricular activities on their holistic development.
Specifically this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a significant difference on the level of voluntariness between sexes of Dalid

Senior High School learners?

2. What are the level of voluntariness of Dalid Senior High School learners towards
extracurricular activities on their holistic development between different socio-
economic statuses.

3. Is there a significant relationship between personal capabilities of Dalid Senior High

School learners and their voluntariness towards extracurricular activities?

Hypothesis
4

There are no significant difference on the level difference on the level of voluntariness of
Dalid Senior High School learners towards extra-curricular activities when classified among sex?

Theoretical Framework

This study is supported by the theory of John B. Watson (1913) in Behaviorism.

John Broadus Watson is remembered as the first psychologist to use human test subjects
in experiments on classical conditioning. He is famous for the Little Albert experiment. Prior to
the experiment, Nine months old, Baby Albert exhibited no fear towards a white rat or other
unfamiliar items. Researchers coupled the rat with a loud, frightening noise in order to
investigate learning via conditioning. Albert began to associate the noise and the rat after several
pairings, and he began to act afraid even in the absence of the noise. The rat even made him
crawl away at the sight of it, refusing to approach it. This study showed that people can develop
emotional reactions by associating neutral and unpleasant stimuli, a technique that was inspired
by Pavlov's work on classical conditioning. (Watson & Rayner, 1920). The Theory of
Behaviorism by John B. Watson (1913) suggests that behaviorism is that consciousness (i.e.
introspective thoughts and feelings) can neither be observed nor manipulated via scientific
methods and therefore should be omitted by the researcher when analyzing behavior. He asserted
that psychology should be purely objective, relying only on observable behavior for predicting
and controlling , thus removing any interpretation of conscious experience. The main focus of
Watson’s theory is predicting and controlling the subject’s reaction to external stimuli. (Bekki et
al., 2020). With this in mind, this theory will also be relevant to this study the in a way that
voluntariness of learners are also affected by various external factors. An example would be a
5

teacher rewarding outstandings marks to diligent learners or bestow sanctions to bad behavior of
a leaner.

Figure 1. The dependent variables are the level of voluntariness of Dalid Senior High School
learners towards extra- curricular activities. While the independent variables are sex, socio-
economic status, and personal capabilities. The researcher believes that sex, socio-economic
status, and personal capabilities correlate with the Level of voluntariness of Dalid Senior High
School learners towards extrcurricular activities.

Significance of the Study

The results and findings in this study will benefit the following:

Learners. This study will help the learners to voluntarily participate more in
extracurricular activities since this study will provide more information about the benefits of
extracurricular activities. The students will be able to develop other aspects of their self.

Teachers. They could help in implementing better strategies and plans in raising the
learner’s enthusiasm and voluntariness towards extracurricular activities. They will be able to
identify the factors involved in the development of strategies and plans.
7

Parents and Guardians. The parents and guardians could help their children by supporting
them in their enthusiasm towards extracurricular activities, it is also important for them to know
the benefits that their children may acquire in participating in these activities.

Future Researchers. The results in these studies will create new doors to unlock for future
researchers to refine and expend studies in relation to voluntariness towards extra-curricular
activities. This may serve as a source of information about the factors that affect voluntariness on
extracurricular activities.

Definition of Terms

Extracurricular – outside the regular curriculum or program of courses: (Random House

Webster's Unabridged Dictionary).

– In this study it is an activity at school pursued for a learner’s holistic development.

Holistic – relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with
the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).

– In this study it includes other fields of knowledge and skills as a whole.

8

Voluntariness – proceeding from the will or/from one’s own choice or consent.(Merriam-
Webster Dictionary).

– In this study it is the state of having freedom of choosing or deciding

Crucial – Important, Significant. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).

– In this study it means important or something of great significance.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study will be the examination of the level of voluntariness on extra-
curricular activities of the Dalid Senior High School learners. This study will consider factors
such as academic workloads, personal interests, and perceived benefits of participation. It will
also briefly explore the roles of the school’s environment and policies in influencing the learner’s
voluntariness in participating. This study will also examine external factors such as family or
societal pressures, financial support, and disabilities that may affect voluntariness.

Due to the nature of this study it will only include the senior high school learners of Dalid
National High School. This study will not include other grade levels as well as senior high school
learners of other schools. It will not consider extra-curricular activities that are not officially
recognized or supported by the school.
