CHAPTER 1

Introduction

The Cutting classes, also known as skipping or being truant, is a regular

occurrence among students in schools and colleges all over the world. The act of

purposefully skipping one or more courses without a good reason causes a student to

fall behind in their coursework, which could have an impact on their academic

achievement. Cutting classes can occur for a number of reasons, such as lack of

interest in the subject, personal problems, peer pressure, or just wishing to pursue

something else in its place. Although while skipping a class can appear innocent, it

can have a negative impact on a student's academic performance, mental health, and

future chances. Understanding the causes of class skipping is therefore crucial, as is

coming up with practical solutions to both avoid and deal with this problem.

Khaminwa, Fallis, and Opotow (2019). According to our findings, student-

guidance counselor interactions resemble negotiations. However, these negotiations

are not explicit but rather implicit. Express exchanges offer life coaches an important

instrument for cooperatively investigating cutting with every pertinent party,

including understudies, educators, heads, and guardians. The social significance of

cutting for this student, desired outcomes, obstacles to these outcomes, and the

negotiation process itself can all be examined through explicit negotiations. Not only

can explicit negotiations help guidance counselors learn about and respond to cutting

more effectively, but they can also serve as a model for students and the school

community as a whole of working together to solve problems. (Khaminwa, Fallis,

Opotow, 2019)
Educational institution are not only for mental sacrifice and mental quotient

feedback but also for correcting, disciplining any forms of behavioral, moral, and

social problems, being faced by the students, problem has enough period of growth

and development. This development starts at the comfort of their homes and families.

The researchers all know that this is the stage where most of the students are

beginning to be curious about life. This is where they start to come out from their

"comfort zone" to explore life and make their own decisions. Not attending in class

may ruin one's future and it can break dreams. Cutting classes are not the right thing

to do if you have a problem with your school works or if you are bored to attend class,

think of ways that can avoid you to cut your class instead of planning to escape from

class. There are people out there who are willing to help you if you have a problem in

school, especially your parents. according to Malcom X. "Education is our passport to

the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." (Managa,

2020

The objective of this study is to explore the reasons why students choose to

skip classes despite being aware of the potential negative outcomes. Additionally, this

research seeks to investigate the impact of this behavior on their academic

performance.

Research Questions:

1.What are the reasons of students choose to cutting class?

2.What the experiences of students who cutting class?

3.How does cutting classes affects the students school performance?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The reason why the researchers have conducted this research is that they want

to know why the students engaged in cutting classes. Many schools have the same

kind of problem where students who cut class are rampant. That is the reason why the

researchers conducted this research. The students of Limban National High School are

the participants in the study that was conducted at Limban National High School in

School Year 2023-2024. This study is all about cutting classes of students.

THEORETICAL LENS

Self-Theories: Their role in motivation, personality, and

development.Dweck(1999) explains that the successful of individual student is to love

learning and to seek challenges, they value efforts and they persist in the face of

obstacles. Each students have the rights to decide on their own, but some of them is

abusing their power to decide,in school some students just want to cut their classes

because of their various reasons.Cutting class can affect the students personality,

development and the way they motivate their selves, it can change their mindset, they

are slowly getting tired and lazy to study.

The researchers see this as a major problem of the students who cut their

classes, they do not value time and opportunities that they can experience for the

future.Dweck’s (1999) theory and the researcher’s study has relationship to each

other. The study and the theory want to know how can students change easily their

mindset and how can they avoid cutting class and how can they motivate their selves

and change their personalities because motivating, developing their personalities can
help them to ensure that they can communicate to other students or people without

hesitating to talk and they can manage to improve their communicating skills. The

researcher and Carol S. Dweck want to study how the personality of students can

improve or enhance their knowledge and ability to explore the world by studying and

do the things that can help them to be matured and can help their selves to improve

their skills and ability on their own

Significance of the study

The following entities will benefit from this research endeavor.

To the Students

The findings will offer students with information about class cutting and how

to avoid it. It will make students realize that cutting is harmful to both the student and

those around him. Students will finally understand why cutting classes have been such

a major issue in society at the end of this study.

To the Teachers

The teachers on what to do with the students that cut classes. The teachers

would be able to understand on why some students skip classes and later on, help

them.

To the Parents

Like the teachers, the parents too will understand why their children skip

classes. help them formulate some preventive measures to help their sons from
skipping classes. The findings would also help them learn the actions of their

children.

To the Future Researchers

They have helped us to learn about drawbacks of cutting, they can get alot of

information and proper behavior and learn how to respect themselves.

Definition of terms

Truant-Truancy is a term used to describe a student's unexcused absence from

school. There are various terms related to truancy, including "dropouts," "school

refusal behavior," and "problematic absenteeism". These terms have been used to

describe different reasons why students may not attend school, such as academic

struggles, emotional or psychological issues, or social factors. Parental involvement is

often seen as a critical element in addressing truancy. In some cases, truancy may be

related to bullying or other forms of social manipulation in the school environment.

work, curricular studies, academic work, and research.
