THE IMPORTANCE OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES TO THE STUDENTS S.Y.

2022-2023

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Extracurricular activities are activities that students participate in outside of academic
classes. These activities include sports, music, theater, debate, volunteer work, and school
clubs. While some may view these activities as mere hobbies or distractions, they are an
integral part of a student’s education and development. According to an article from Plade
Line. One of the struggles of the students joining extracurricular activities is the possibility of
becoming worn out, fatigued, poor social skills and having low self-esteem, which may
become unmotivated if they are unable to perform well in their extracurricular activities. Low
self-esteem is a common issue among students in school. According to the American
Psychological Association, students with low self-esteem may blame themselves for things that
are not their fault or try to control others’ behavior to alleviate a sense of helplessness. In
addition, students may react to adversity by giving up, avoiding risks, or disengaging from tasks,
which can all contribute to low self-esteem. If a child struggles in an area that they find
important, such as academics, they are at risk of developing low self-esteem. Low self-esteem has
been linked to a number of mental health issues, including anxiety, eating disorders, emotional
distress, panic disorder, risky behaviors, social anxiety disorder, substance use, and stress. Poor
social skill can often lead to stress and loneliness, which can negatively affect mental health and
academic life of the students.
