GLOSSARY

Plasma It is formed when a gas is ionised at a very high

temperature
.

Spectrophotometer It is an analytical instrument used for the objective

calculation of visible light, UV light, or infrared light
emission or reflection.

Permeability It is a measure of the ease of passage of liquids or gases or

specific chemicals through the material..

Porosity It is the open spaces between grains or trapped in grains in a

microstructure — the presence of tiny openings or spaces
within a material. Porous materials can absorb fluids or
moisture, which causes corrosion. Porosity is a fraction
between 0 and 1, typically ranging from less than 0.01 for
solid granite to more than 0.5 for peat and clay. It may also
be represented in percent terms by multiplying the fraction
by 100

Kinetic energy It is a form of energy that an object or a particle has by

reason of its motion. If work, which transfers energy, is done
on an object by applying a net force, the object speeds up
and thereby gains kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is a
property of a moving object or particle and depends not only
on its motion but also on its mass.

Selectivity the quality of carefully choosing someone or something as

the best or most suitable

Spectroscopy the branch of science concerned with the investigation and

measurement of spectra produced when matter interacts with
or emits electromagnetic radiation.

Permeance Permeance, in general, is the degree to which a material

admits a flow of matter or energy. Permeance is usually
represented by a curly capital P

steam cycle A engine cycle which uses steam as a working fluid to do

mechanical work.

5
supercritical fluid A supercritical fluid (SCF) is any substance at a temperature
and pressure above its critical point, where distinct liquid and
gas phases do not exist, but below the pressure required to
compress it into a solid.

Geothermal heat Geothermal is the natural heat of the Earth. It is derived from
the decay of the radioactive elements in the Earth’s crust and
transferred to the subsurface by conduction and convection.

Durability the ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage

Critical point a point on a phase diagram at which both the liquid and gas
phases of a substance have the same density, and are
therefore indistinguishable.
