INTRODUCTION
• The world today is facing severe climatic
problems

• Primary reason for this is the increasing

CO2 emission

• According to an analysis of NOAA’s Global

Monitoring Lab  the average global carbon
dioxide concentration in 2021 was 414.72
ppm
• Graphene sheets were used for CO2
absorption

• Raw sheets were subjected to certain

treatment

• After the treatment, we got sheets which

had 6 times higher CO2 permeance
(6180 GPU with a CO2/N2 separation
factor of 22.5)
REQUIREMENTS
◦ Graphene Sheets

◦ Vacumm Chamber

◦ Abberation corrected high-resolution transmission

electron microscope
CONSTRUCTION
◦ Graphene membranes are made up of SPONG.
◦ First, oxygen-functionalized nanoporous graphene (ONG) was obtained by exposing single-layer graphene to
oxygen plasma and ozone.
◦ Subsequently, CO2-philic polymeric chains were grafted on the porous graphene lattice to obtain polymer
functionalized ONG (PONG).
◦ Last, the poly(ethylene glycol)- dimethyl-ether (PEGDE) oligomer was used to swell the CO2-philic polymer
layer in PONG leading to a swollen PONG (SPONG) film with a total film thickness of less than 20 nm
Working
ADVANTAGES
◦ Carbon capture can increase the power generated with carbon dioxide-based steam cycles.

◦ Effective separation and storage of co2 can be done.

◦ Durability of the infrastructure can be increased.

◦ Well suited to natural gas processing.

◦ Increases employment.
LIMITATION
◦ Challenge for such membranes has been a trade-off between permeability and selectivity.
◦ This technique required multiple stages and recycled streams for separation.
◦ Concern for the energy supply
◦ Safety of the storage of carbon dioxide
◦ If the concentration of carbon is low then it will affect the efficiency of capturing membrane.
◦ It is not economically favourable for sectors like cement, chemicals and fertilizers production.
APPLICATION
◦ Using graphene in food and
pharmaceutical.
◦ For manufacturing polymers,
polyurethanes, and chemicals such as
methanol, urea, and co2-derived fuels
like kerosene, gasoline, etc.
◦ Water treatment.
◦ Liquid separation.
CONCLUSION
◦ It is a new class of organic-inorganic class membrane.
◦ This membrane allows us to apply for low molecular weight polymers
and oligomers for carbon capture.
◦ It offers a potentially viable energy-saving alternative for CO2.
◦ Effective way to separate CO2 from a mixture of gases.
