Engineering Standard Number
Name STEEL,LEADED LOW ALLOY
1. Scope
This specification covers leaded, spherodize annealed, cold drawn and stress relieved alloy steel
bars. Material which conforms to ASTM A29 E52L100, JIS G4805 SUJ 2 Leaded and
BS970 535A99 Leaded will meet this specification.

3. Definitions
There are no unique definitions in this standard. Terms used in this standard that have a general
definition for usage in Cummins Engineering Standards are defined in CES 10056, Glossary.
4. Specification
4.1. Significance and Use
4.1.1. This specification covers leaded, spherodize annealed, cold drawn and stress relieved
alloy steel bars for use where machinability is a significant consideration since lead
improves machinability.
4.1.2. If this specification is utilized, an optional material without lead should also
be specified.
4.1.3. If the material is to be heat treated the potential embrittling effect of lead should
be considered.
4.1.4. If the material is to be welded, brazed or cut with a torch the following three issues
should be considered:
a. Workers must be protected from the toxic effects of lead via adequate ventilation.
b. Lead may adversely affect the weld strength by covering the weld interface and
inhibiting bonding.
c. If areas adjacent to the weld are simultaneously loaded in tension and heated into the
embrittlement range, there is potential for cracking.
4.1.5. Acceptance limits are statistically significant as indicated in CES 99020 unless
specifically excepted.
Chemical composition shall be within the acceptance limits specified by Table 1: Chemical
Composition on page 2
4.5. Structure
4.5.2. Grain size shall be 5 - 8 when measured in accordance with ASTM E112.
Material must be commercially free from seams, laps, pipe, segregation and other defects
detrimental to machining or performance.
