1 Scope

This Specification defines the minimum mandatory requirements for the design,
material selection, fabrication and packaging of one story pre-engineered metal
buildings with or without mezzanines. This specification also applies to unenclosed
structures such as sunshades and carports that are furnished by a pre-engineered metal
building vendor.

This Specification does not address foundation requirements, interior finish out,
specialty requirements, or building systems such as fire protection, electrical, or
mechanical systems. This specification also does not address proprietary space frame
structures, or composite buildings consisting of concrete wall panels and roof slabs
attached to metal framing.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

3 References

All referenced specifications, standards, codes, forms, drawings and similar material
shall be of the latest issue (including all revisions, addenda and supplements) unless
stated otherwise.

The design and fabrication of the metal building system shall conform to the applicable
sections of the following referenced codes and standards unless indicated otherwise in
this specification. In the event of conflicting criteria in the referenced documents, the
most stringent requirement shall be used.

4 General

4.1 The materials furnished shall include the structural framing, roofing, siding,
anchor bolts, flashing and trim, leveling plates, doors, windows, hardware,
fasteners, sealants, and any other component parts for the metal buildings as
specified in the order and as required to make a complete system.

4.2 Unless otherwise provided in the Purchase Order the metal building does not
include:
a) Reinforced concrete foundations, grade beams and/or floor slabs.
b) Grouting or filling of any kind under columns or door jambs or in a recess
at the base of wall covering panels.
c) Interior downspouts or their drains for valley or parapet gutters, either
under floor or otherwise.
d) Materials which are required for the assembly or installation of accessories
supplied by others.
e) Glass for openings other than doors and windows.
f) Interior finishing material, including partition material, except for liner
panels.
g) Electrical equipment and wiring.
h) Mechanical equipment, including exhaust fans.
i) Masonry materials.
j) Field painting.

4.3 Building Description

4.3.1 The building type and dimensions shall be in accordance with the
drawings or detailed description attached to the Purchase Order.

4.3.2 The minimum roof slope shall be not less than 1:12 for single-sheet
and sandwich panel roofs with screw fasteners that penetrate the roof
sheet(s). The minimum roof slope for standing-seam roof systems
shall not be less than 1:25.

4.3.3 The following information will be provided by the buyer using the Pre-
Engineered Metal Buildings Design Data Sheet (Attachment 1 to this
specification):
a) Building plans and/or description.
b) Location of building (i.e., whether or not in coastal area). Unless
specified otherwise in the Purchase Order, coastal areas are
defined as all locations within one kilometer from the shoreline
of the Arabian Gulf; all of the Ras Tanura Refinery and
Terminal; and within three kilometers from the shoreline of the
Red Sea.
c) The building classification based on the nature of occupancy, as
per 2006 IBC, Table 1604.5.
d) Maximum allowable heat transmission coefficient U and design
internal temperature (for walls and roof).
e) Glazing to be provided (yes or no).
f) Panels to be primed or completely pre-painted.
g) Floor or mezzanine live loads for use or occupancy that are not
defined in this specification (if applicable).
h) Crane capacities and service classifications in accordance with
CMAA No. 70 or No. 74 Specifications (as applicable).
i) Collateral Loads - The weight of additional permanent materials
supported from the building frame such as mechanical systems,
electrical systems, sprinklers, ceilings and partitions (if designed
and/or installed by others). Drawings shall be furnished that
clearly indicate the location and magnitude of these loads.
j) Coating systems including colors for wall and roof panels and
structural members.
Commentary Note:

All coating systems shall comply with SAES-H-Series Standards


or approved in writing to be suitable for the intended purpose by
Saudi Aramco, also see paragraph 7.1.
k) Louver type (see 8.9), if applicable.

The Vendor shall contact the Buyer in case all or some of the required
information is missing. The Vendor shall inform the Buyer in writing
of any requirement(s) in this Specification that cannot be met during
the early bidding stage.

4.4 All framing members shall be made from structural steel designed and shop
fabricated for bolted field assembly, unless otherwise noted on erection
drawings.

4.5 All framing members shall carry an easily visible identifying piece marks.

5 Design

5.1 Design Loads and Load Combinations

5.1.1 Minimum roof live loads and its design application shall be in
accordance with the requirements of the 2006 IBC, Section 1607.11, or
as set forth in Table 1607.1.

5.1.2 Floor design live loads shall conform to Section 1607 and Table
1607.1 of the 2006 IBC. For occupancies or uses not defined, Saudi
Aramco shall be contacted for a ruling on the design values prior to the
start of the design.

5.1.3 Snow loads are not required for buildings located in Saudi Arabia
unless specifically called for in the purchase documents.

5.1.4 The design of pre-engineered buildings for wind and earthquake forces
shall be in compliance with Chapter 16 of the 2006 IBC.

5.1.4.1 SAES-A-112 shall be used to determine basic wind speed and


seismic zone values for design.

5.1.4.2 All buildings shall be considered as Category IV "essential


facilities" for selection of the importance factors in IBC 2006
Table 1604.5, unless indicated otherwise in the purchase
documents.

5.1.5 Crane beams, support brackets, connections to columns or roof beams,


and all other components related to cranes, shall be designed for the
applicable crane loads as per Section II of the MBMA's 2006 Metal
Building Systems Manual.

5.1.6 The roof framing and the building columns shall be designed to
support collateral loads that are supported from the roof framing such
as A.C. ducts, false ceiling, light fixtures and piping. The minimum

design collateral load shall not be less than 0.25 kN/m² (5 lb/ft²).
These loads shall be specified within the purchase documents if
designed by others.

5.1.7 Thermal loads shall be based on temperature difference that is based on


the temperature differential between the Highest and Lowest One-Day
Mean Temperature per SAES-A-112 plus 20°C.

5.1.8 Load combinations shall be in accordance with Section 1605 of the


2006 IBC.

5.2 Serviceability

The serviceability requirements for deflection, drift, and drainage to be used in


the design of PEB buildings shall be in accordance with MBMA 2006 Metal
Building Systems Manual, Section III.
Commentary Note:

A reduction factor of 0.706 (or 0.842) may be applied to wind force values
calculated as per SAES-A-112 design data, with an importance factor I = 1.0, to
approximate the equivalent 10 year mean recurrence interval (MRI) wind force,
which is used for some MBMA serviceability criteria. Reference ASCE 7-05,
Table C6-7.

Additionally, the lateral drift (displacement) of the building frame shall not in
any way hamper the operation of equipment, doors, mechanical devices, storage
racks, cranes or other items which are not attached to the building frame.

Serviceability requirements related to floor vibrations caused by walking


excitations shall comply with the criteria of AISC Design Guide No. 11: Floor
Vibrations Due to Human Activity.

5.3 Special Design Requirements

5.3.1 Crane runway beams shall be fabricated from hot-rolled structural steel
shapes. Overhead crane beams and crane support bracket connections
shall utilize locknuts on all bolts to prevent loosening from vibration.

5.3.2 Jib crane support columns shall be checked for all load combinations
over the full swing of the jib crane. Deflection limits for jib cranes
shall include the portion of deflection resulting from the deformation
of the support column under the applied jib crane load.

5.3.3 Sag rods shall be furnished as necessary to support wall girts. A beam
of sufficient strength to support the sag rod loads shall be furnished at
the top of the wall, as applicable.

5.3.4 An eaves strut shall be furnished on the building column lines to


provide an uninterrupted load path for forces being carried by the
building's vertical bracing system.

5.3.5 The minimum thicknesses used in built-up members shall be 5 mm for


flange plates and 3.5 mm for webs.

5.3.6 The minimum thickness of cold-formed steel members shall be 1.5 mm.

5.3.7 When it is desirable to provide for movement in a connection to


accommodate steel expansion, the bolts that are installed in slotted
holes shall be finger tight with double nuts to prevent loosening.

5.3.8 All Slip-Critical connections shall be clearly marked on the shop


drawings.

5.3.9 Slip-Critical joints shall have uncoated faying surfaces or be coated


with approved slip resistant paint, per AISC Specification for
Structural Joints using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts.

5.3.10 Flush end-plate moment connections shall comply with AISC/MBMA


Design Guide No. 16: Flush and Extended Multiple-Row Moment
End-Plate Connections.

5.3.11 Expansion joints shall be located and designed as recommended in


AISC Design Guide No. 7: Industrial Buildings.

5.3.12 The use of cables for bracing is not allowed in pre-engineered metal
buildings for Saudi Aramco facilities.

6 Material Specifications

All materials shall be new, free of defects and meet or exceed the physical requirements
of the design and fabrication process.

6.1 Structural Steel Shapes, Plates and Sheet

6.1.1 All steel for hot-rolled structural shapes, built-up shapes, plates and
tubes shall conform to one of the following specifications:

6.1.2 All crane rails shall conform to one of the following specifications:
ASTM A1 for rails less 104 lb/yd
ASTM A759 for rails 104 lb/yd to 175 lb/yd

6.1.3 All steel for cold formed structural shapes shall conform to one of the
following specifications:
ASTM A653/A653M
ASTM A1008/A1008M
ASTM A1011/A1011M

6.1.4 All material for cold formed tubing in rounds and shapes shall conform
to ASTM A500 Grade A, or better.

6.1.5 Galvanized steel sheet shall conform to ASTM A653/A653M Grade


SS Class 1, Grade 50 (Grade 340) or better and shall be galvanized in
accordance with coating designation G90 (Z275). In addition, a mill
treatment shall aid in the prevention of oxidation on the zinc coated
surfaces.

6.1.6 Aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet shall conform to ASTM


A792/A792M Grade 345 MPa (50 ksi) with a coating designation of
AZ50 (AZM150).

6.2 Structural Bolts, Nuts & Washers

6.2.1 All primary bolted connections, as shown on drawings, shall be


furnished with high-strength bolts conforming to ASTM A325 or
ASTM A325M, Type-1, galvanized. All high-strength bolts are to be
tightened by the procedures outlined in AISC – "Specification for
Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or ASTM A490 Bolts".

6.2.2 All high-strength bolts shall be furnished with nuts and washers. Nuts
for high-strength bolts shall conform to either ASTM A194/A194M or
ASTM A563 or ASTM A563M. Washers shall conform to ASTM
F436 or ASTM F436M.

6.2.3 When high-strength bolts are required in sizes less than ½" diameter,
the bolts shall conform to ASTM A449, Type 1, galvanized.

6.2.4 All primary bolted connections shall contain at least two bolts.

6.2.5 All machine bolts shall conform to ASTM A307 and shall be galvanized
to either ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM B695. ASTM A307 bolts are
only allowed for the attachment of secondary members such as girts and
purlins, and items such as stair treads, handrail, ladders, etc. When
ASTM A307 bolts are used, the sizes used should not be the same
diameter as any A325/A325M or A449 bolts used for the same Purchase
Order. ASTM A307 bolts are to be limited to sizes 5/8" diameter and
smaller.

6.2.6 ASTM A307 bolts shall be furnished with nuts that conform to
ASTM A563 and washers conforming to ASTM F436, ASTM F436M
or ASTM F844.

6.2.7 Eyebolts used to attach cable bracing shall be forged steel, load rated
eyebolts and shall be galvanized to ASTM A153/153M. The ultimate
load for the eyebolt shall be 5 times the safe working load limit.

6.3 Structural pipe shall conform to ASTM A53/A53M Type E or S, Grade B or


ASTM A106/A106M, Grade B.

6.4 Wire strand (cable) shall conform to ASTM A475, zinc coated, extra high
strength (7 wires per strand).

6.5 Roof and Wall Coverings

Unless indicated in the Purchase Order, the vendor shall select either single
sheet or sandwich type roof and wall panels based on the required maximum
heat transmission coefficient and required internal design temperature. The
choice of panels is subject to prior written approval of the buyer.

6.5.1 Roof Panels (Single Sheet Roof Panels)


a) Roof panels shall be made of a minimum 0.5 mm (26 gage) thick
galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet. Roof
panels for buildings in coastal areas, or as specified in the
purchase order, shall be made of a minimum 0.7 mm thickness
aluminum sheet.
b) Roof panels shall be ribbed to provide adequate rigidity.
c) Panels shall provide a net coverage width of 900 mm (3 ft
nominal) minimum. Roof panels shall be laid full length from
ridge to eaves where possible to minimize the possibility of water
leaks at the end laps. When required, end lap shall be a minimum
of 100 mm (4 inches nominal).
d) Panel joints shall interlock in such a way as to provide complete

water-tightness and an allowance for thermal expansion for a


thermal differential of 67°C.
e) Material for prepainted galvanized steel panels shall have a
minimum yield of 230 MPa (33 ksi) and conform to ASTM
A653/A653M SS Grade 33 (Grade 230) or better and galvanized
in accordance with coating designation of G90 (Z275).
f) Aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet panels shall conform to
ASTM A792/A792M Grade 345 MPa (50ksi) with a coating
designation of AZ50 (AZM150).
g) The roof panels shall be insulated to provide the maximum heat
transmission coefficient (U) as specified in the Purchase Order.
However, the maximum "U" coefficient shall not be greater than
0.45 W/(m² K) [0.08 BTU/(hr ft² °F)] through the installed roof.
h) The use of fiberglass insulation shall meet the following
conditions: flexible; resilient; odorless; shall not contribute to
corrosion of steel or aluminum; flame spread rating of 25 or less
and shall comply with the provisions of Section 707 of the
Uniform Building Code; facing shall cover the width of the
fiberglass blanket plus two flanges each 50 mm wide; vapor
barrier to be aluminum foil or equal placed on the outside.
Interior exposed insulation shall receive a quilted covering
(preferably a fiberglass scrim) on the interior surface to protect
the insulation.
i) Fasteners shall be provided to secure the roof panels against wind
uplift, mechanical movement, and to maintain water-tight panel
joints. Particular care should be taken to ensure compliance with
UBC Section 1622 and Table 16-H with regard to local wind
pressure effects.

6.5.2 Alternate Roof Panels (Sandwich Roof Panels): Further to the


requirements of paragraph 6.5.1, sandwich roof panels shall comply
with the following:
a) Roof panels shall be self contained, factory assembled foam
plastic insulated units having a nominal covering width of not
less than 900 mm (3 ft nominal) unless approved otherwise by
Saudi Aramco.
b) The exterior face sheet shall be made of minimum 0.5 mm (26
gage) thick galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated sheet steel
and shall be formed architecturally to provide adequate rigidity.
For buildings in coastal areas, or as specified in the purchase

order the external face sheet shall be made of a minimum 0.7 mm


thickness aluminum sheet.
c) The interior face sheet shall be minimum 0.5 mm (26 gage) thick
galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated sheet steel and shall be
formed into a plane surface.
d) Foam plastic insulation shall have a flame spread rating of 25 or
less. The vendor is cautioned that the Section 2602 of the
Uniform Building Code contains certain restrictive requirements
for the use of foam plastic insulation that must be complied with.
Accordingly, the building design should incorporate appropriate
details which will satisfy the code requirements.

6.5.3 Wall Panels (Single sheet wall panels)


a) Wall panels shall have nominal covering width not less than
900 mm (3 ft nominal) unless approved otherwise by Saudi
Aramco.
b) The panel shall be made of a minimum 0.5 mm (26 gage) thick
galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet, or
aluminum as applicable, formed architecturally consistent with
the ribbing of the roof.
c) Wall panels for buildings in coastal areas, or as specified in the
Purchase Order, shall be minimum 0.7 mm thickness aluminum
and shall be ribbed to provide adequate rigidity.
d) The panels shall be in one length from base to building eaves.
Wall panel length for above and below windows shall be as
indicated on the drawings. Wall panels shall be supported at their
base by a raised curb or grade beam that is a minimum of 150
mm above the building floor level. Wall panels shall extend not
less than 38 mm below the concrete support, and sit in a recess in
the concrete grade beam or curb to close off the lower end of the
panels. The panels shall be self-draining to the exterior.
e) Galvanized sill angles shall be provided to secure wall panels to
the grade beam or curb.
f) Wall panels shall be insulated to provide the maximum heat
transmission coefficient (U) specified in the Purchase Order.
However, the maximum "U" coefficient shall be as follows:
1) The exterior walls of areas indicated as non-air conditioned
are to have a "U" coefficient not greater than 1.19 W/(m² K)
{0.21 BTU/ (hr ft² °F)}.

2) The exterior walls of air conditioned rooms are to have a


"U" coefficient not greater than 0.568 W/(m² K) {0.10
BTU/(hr ft² °F)}.
g) The use of fiberglass insulation shall meet the following
conditions: flexible; resilient; odorless; shall not contribute to
corrosion of steel or aluminum; flame spread rating of 25 or less
and shall comply with the provisions Section 707 of the Uniform
Building Code; facing shall cover the width of the fiberglass
blanket plus two flanges each 50 mm wide; vapor barrier to be
aluminum foil or equal placed on the outside. Interior exposed
insulation shall receive a quilted covering (preferably a fiberglass
scrim) on the interior surface to protect the insulation. When
required by the Purchase Order, additional protection for the
insulation shall be provided (such as a liner panel).

6.5.4 Alternate Wall Panels (Sandwich Wall Panels): In addition to the


requirements of paragraph 6.5.3, sandwich wall panels shall comply
with the following:
a) Wall panels shall be self contained, factory assembled foam
plastic insulated units, having a nominal covering width not less
than 900 mm (3 ft nominal) unless approved otherwise by Saudi
Aramco.
b) The prepainted exterior face sheet shall be made of a minimum
0.5 mm (26 gage) galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel
sheet and shall be formed architecturally to provide adequate
rigidity. For buildings in coastal areas, or as specified in the
purchase order the prepainted exterior face sheet shall be made of
a minimum 0.7 mm thickness aluminum sheet.
c) The prepainted interior face sheet shall be made of a minimum
0.5 mm (26 gage) galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel
sheet shall be formed into a plane surface.
d) Metal to metal contact between the interior and exterior faces on
vertical edges shall be prevented.
e) The vertical joints shall overlap having a thermal break and
providing for mechanical, as well as thermal, horizontal
movement. The panel design shall provide for expansion and/or
contraction as caused by an ambient temperature range without
causing harmful buckling, opening of joints, or other detrimental
effects.
e) Foam plastic insulation shall have a flame spread rating of 25 or
less. The vendor is cautioned that the Section 2602 of the

Uniform Building Code contains certain restrictive requirements


for the use of foam plastic insulation that must be complied with.
Accordingly, building design should incorporate appropriate
details which will satisfy the code requirements.

6.6 Roof and Wall Fasteners

All panels shall be attached to secondary framing members by means of self-


drilling or self-tapping screws. The screws shall be hex head carbon steel
screws assembled with an EPDM washer and mechanically zinc coating in
accordance with ASTM B695, Class 50. However, in coastal areas, as defined
in paragraph 4.3.3(b), an austenitic (300 series) stainless steel fasteners shall be
used. Fastener heads shall be coated the same color as the panels.

6.7 Sealants and Closures

6.7.1 Sealant
a) A sealing compound shall be provided to seal ends and side laps
of panels. The material shall consist of a blend of non-toxic,
synthetic resin base ingredients and inert extenders. Asphalt or
asphalt derivatives are not permitted.
b) The application of sealant shall be of a cross-sectional area to
provide a positive seal between adjacent surfaces.
c) The material shall have sufficient adhesion to metal and plastic so
as to remain in place during normal handling operations.
Adhesive tensile strength shall be a minimum of 28 kPa (4 psi).
d) The sealing compound shall prevent the entry of water by
capillary action or otherwise when used in a properly installed
roof or wall system.

6.7.2 Flashing, Trim and Closures


a) Flashing and/or trim shall be furnished at the rake, corners, eaves,
at framed openings, and wherever necessary to provide weather
tightness and a finished appearance. Color will be as specified in
the purchase order.
b) Galvanized or aluminum-zinc steel for flashing, metal closures,
trim and other miscellaneous uses shall be 0.5 mm (26 gage)
conforming paragraphs 6.1.5 or 6.1.6 of this standard.
c) A formed panel matching the slope and profile of adjoining
panels shall be provided along the building ridge.

d) Preformed closures matching the profile of the panel shall be


installed along the eave and other locations as specified on
drawings or as required for weather tightness, and may be made
of solid or closed cell plastic materials subject to Buyer's
approval.

7 Finishes

7.1 Finish Panel Paint

Vendor shall submit detailed specifications covering the finish of exterior and
interior surfaces of sheet metal paneling, trim and related components, for Saudi
Aramco written approval. The procedures shall cover surface cleaning,
pretreatments, quality of coating materials, application of primer and finish,
curing or baking, thickness of coating and color. The Vendor shall maintain the
quality of work and records as specified in SAES-H-100.

7.2 Dissimilar Materials

Dissimilar Materials which are not compatible with the adjoining materials
when exposed to moisture must be separated by means of approved coatings,
gaskets, or other effective means. Aluminum alloys shall be considered
compatible with zinc and cadmium coated surfaces and the 300 and 400 AISI
Series Stainless Steel Alloys and do not require application of barrier material.

8 Accessories

8.1 General

Standard manufacturer's building accessories may be furnished if the accessories


equal or exceed the minimum requirements of this Section.

8.2 Aluminum Windows

Aluminum windows shall be designed and constructed for integral installation


with the system. Unless required otherwise in the contract documents, provide
building manufacturer's standard insulated double-pane window (AAMA HS-
C20 horizontal sliding, commercial grade) with medium natural anodized finish
(NAAMM AA-C22A31). (Alternative if selected by buyer: fixed sash AAMA,
Grade C20.)

8.2.1 Aluminum Extruded Frame: Material shall comply with ASTM B221
or ASTM B221M.

8.2.1.1 Provide "thermal-break" construction. Separate frame and


sash members exposed on the exterior from metal parts
exposed on the interior by a continuous gasket or filler of
rubber or plastic, locked into construction.

8.2.1.2 Mullions: Provide mullions between adjacent windows,


fabricated of extruded aluminum matching the finish of
window units.

8.2.2 Fasteners: Provide aluminum, stainless steel, or other material


warranted by the manufacturer to be non-corrosive and compatible
with aluminum window members, trim, hardware, anchors, and other
components of window units.

8.2.3 Anchors, Clips, and Window Accessories: Depending on strength and


corrosion-inhibiting requirements, fabricate from aluminum, stainless
steel, or hot-dip zinc-coated steel (complying with ASTM
A123/A123M).

8.2.4 Compression Glazing Strips and Weather-Stripping: Provide molded


EPDM, neoprene gaskets complying with ASTM D2000 designation
2BC415 to 3BC620, molded PVC gaskets complying with ASTM
D2287, Grade 4, or molded expanded neoprene gaskets complying
with ASTM C509.

8.2.5 Sliding Weather-Stripping: Provide woven pile weather-stripping of


wool, polypropylene, or nylon pile and resin-impregnated backing
fabric, with aluminum backing strip. Comply with AAMA 701.

8.2.6 Sealants: Provide manufacturer's standard for the joint size or


anticipated movement. The sealant shall remain permanently elastic
and be non-shrinking and non-migrating.

8.2.7 Insect Screens: Provide removable insect screen on each operable


exterior sash, with finish matching window.

8.2.8 Pre-glazed Construction: To the greatest extent possible, glaze units at


the shop before installation.

8.2.9 Glass: Unless required otherwise in the contract documents, comply


with ASTM C1036 for glass type, class, quality, style, kind, and form
and with recommendations of the FGMA Glazing Manual.

8.3 Personnel Doors and Door Hardware

8.3.1 Doors shall comply with PIP Specification ARS08111. Door leaves

shall be 45 mm thick, full flush, fabricated from Class G90 (Z275) zinc
coated sheets or better. Jamb extensions shall be furnished where
required to provide secure attachment to the wall framing.

8.3.2 Door hardware shall comply with PIP Specification ARS08710.

8.3.3 Each door leaf shall be installed with three 114 mm x 114 mm
galvanized steel, interlocking, template butt hinges.

8.3.4 Door leaves and frames shall be shop-painted with one coat of primer
or finished to match the walls.

8.3.5 The threshold shall be an extruded aluminum shape to provide positive


weather seal.

8.3.6 All exit doors shall be a minimum of 915 mm wide x 2035 mm high.

8.4 Equipment Doors

8.4.1 Door leaves shall be constructed of steel framing and panels as


specified for the walls. The door leaves shall be adequately flashed
and counter-flashed for weather tightness. Large doors may be field
assembled with bolted connections.

8.4.2 The leaves of sliding doors shall be suspended from a "C" section or
other appropriate structural member as a track header with the
galvanized track field bolted. Trolleys shall be galvanized steel with
dual, nylon wheels. The track and trolleys shall be protected by a
counter-flashed hood. When the door is in the closed position the
vertical gaps between the door outer edges and wall shall be
automatically sealed with a closure device.

8.4.3 The doors shall have inside and outside locking devices.

8.4.4 Equipment door jambs and jamb support members shall be finished as
specified for the structural frame.

8.5 Overhead Roll-up Doors

8.5.1 Provide complete overhead roll-up door assemblies including door


curtain, guides, counterbalance, hardware, operators, and installation
accessories as specified herein, unless otherwise required in the
contract documents.

8.5.2 Doors and Frames: Design for the wind loading specified in Paragraph
5.1.5.

8.5.3 Door Curtain: Provide interlocking steel slat door curtain with one-
piece slats for the full length of door width. Form from minimum
0.8mm
(22-gage) or 1mm (20 gage), structural sheet steel.

8.5.4 Bottom Bar: Provide bottom bar on door curtain consisting extruded
aluminum or two 3 mm (1/8") thick angles of the same metal as the
door curtain slats. A flexible rubber, EPDM, vinyl, or neoprene
weather seal and cushion bumper shall be provided on the bottom bar.

8.5.5 Vision Panel: Where vision panels are shown, provide ¼" thick cast
thermo-plastic, methyl methacrylate vision panels set in neoprene or
vinyl glazing channels in the arrangement indicated

8.5.6 Weather Seals: At exterior doors, provide 3 mm (1/8") thick


continuous rubber or neoprene sheet weather seals on metal pressure
bars secured to inside of curtain coil hood. At doorjambs, use 3 mm
(1/8") thick continuous strip secured to exterior side of jamb guide.

8.5.7 Hood: Form to enclose the coiled curtain and operating mechanism
entirely at the opening head and to act as a weather seal. Contour to
suit end brackets to which attached. Roll and reinforce top and bottom
edges for stiffness. Provide closed ends for surface-mounted hoods
and any portion of between-jamb mounting projecting beyond wall
face. Provide intermediate support brackets to prevent sag. Fabricate
hoods for steel doors from minimum 24-gage zinc-coated steel sheet
(phosphate-treat before fabrication).

8.5.8 Shop Finish: Provide shop finish as specified in the contract


documents.

8.5.9 Chain Hoist Operation: Provide operator assembly consisting of an


endless cadmium-plated alloy steel hand chain, chain pocket wheel and
guard, and geared reduction unit with maximum 16 kg (35 lb) pull for
door operation. Design chain hoist with self-locking mechanism
allowing curtain to be stopped at any point in its travel and to remain in
that position until movement is reactivated. Furnish chain with chain
holder secured to operator guide.

8.5.10 Electric Door Operators: Furnish electric operator assembly of size


and capacity recommended by manufacturer. Operators shall be
complete with NEMA MG 1 or IEC-rated motor and factory-prewired
motor controls, gear reduction unit, solenoid-operated brake, remote
control stations, control devices, conduit and wiring from controls to
motor and central stations, and accessories required for proper

operation. Electric operator shall meet the buyer's area classification


requirements in accordance with the contract documents.
a. Provide a hand-operated disconnect or mechanism for
automatically engaging a sprocket and chain operator and
releasing the brake for emergency manual operation. Include
interlock device to automatically prevent motor from operating
when manual operator is engaged.
b. Electric Motors: Provide high-starting torque, reversible, constant
duty; Class A insulated electric motor with overload protection.
Motors shall be sized to move door in either direction, from any
position, at not less than 200 mm (2 /3 ft) or more than 300 mm
(1 ft) per second. Coordinate wiring requirements and current
characteristics of motors with building electrical system.
c. Furnish open-drip-proof-type motor and controller with NEMA
250, Type 1 enclosure or IEC equivalent.
d. Remote Control Station: Provide NEMA or IEC-approved,
momentary contact, three-button control station with push-button
controls labeled "open," "close," and "stop."
 Interior Units: Full-guarded, surface-mounted, heavy-duty
remote control stations, with general-purpose NEMA 250,
Type 1 enclosure or IEC equivalent.
 Exterior Units: Full-guarded, surface-mounted, standard-duty
weatherproof-type remote control stations with NEMA 250,
Type 4 enclosures or IEC equivalent. Provide units designed
for key operation.
e. Automatic Reversing Control: Furnish each door with an electric
automatic safety switch, extending the full width of the door
bottom, located within a neoprene or rubber astragal mounted to
bottom rail of the door or an electric eye (should be "electric
eye") system. The mechanism shall be manufactured so that
contact with an obstruction before fully closing will immediately
stop downward travel and reverse the travel direction so that the
door is returned to the fully opened position.

8.6 Translucent Wall and Roof Panels

8.6.1 Wall and roof light-transmitting panels shall conform to the wall and
roof panel configurations and shall be a minimum of 2.4 kg/m2 (8-oz.),
one-piece, flexible, translucent, fiberglass-reinforced resins. Roof
panels shall be capable of supporting a 200-pound concentrated load

without failure. The panels shall be uniformly white with heat


transmission of 25% and light transmission of 55% in accordance with
ASTM D1494, unless noted otherwise in the contract documents. Other
types of skylights may be used when specified or approved by buyer.

8.6.2 Panels are to be fire retardant; having a flame spread rating of 25 or less.

8.7 Eave Gutters and Downspouts

8.7.1 Eave Gutters shall be box shaped 0.5 mm (26 gage) galvanized or
aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel. The outside face of the gutter shall
be supported with 2.0 mm galvanized steel straps to the eave member
at a maximum spacing of 1000 mm.

8.7.2 Downspouts shall be round or rectangular shaped 0.5 mm (26 gage)


galvanized or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel. Downspouts shall
have a 45 degree elbow at the bottom and shall be supported by
attachment to the wall covering at 3 meters maximum spacing.

8.8 Ventilators and Roof Openings

Ventilators and roof openings shall be weather tight and shall be framed and
braced adequately to sustain the design wind and roof loads around the
openings. Ventilators shall be furnished with bird screen.

8.9 Louvers

Louver frames shall be fabricated from 1.22 mm (18 gage) galvanized steel, and
blades from 0.91 mm (20 gage) galvanized steel. Louvers shall have blades of
the overlapping type providing maximum weather tightness while allowing free
air flow. Louvers are to be fixed sand trap type or adjustable by means of a
crank, as specified in the Purchase Documents. Louver frames and blade
fabricated from extruded aluminum sheet of 1.22 mm (18 gage) thickness are
also acceptable.

8.9.1 Provide vertical mullions for louvers 1220 mm (4 ft) and wider with
one mullion for each 1220 mm (4 ft) of width.

8.9.2 Provide flanges on interior face of frames where air intake or exhaust
louvers are indicated to be connected with mechanically operated
dampers or metal ductwork.

8.9.3 Provide galvanized steel insect/bird screens in rewirable frames on


exterior face of louvers. Grid dimensions of insect/ bird screen mesh
will be 12 mm square unless a specific size is specified in the purchase

order. Secure with clips to ensure ease of removal for cleaning and
rewiring. Fabricate screen frames to match louvers.

9 Building Foundations

Design: The design of the foundation is not included in the supply of the metal building
documentation. Vendor shall furnish the Buyer with all necessary information to
properly design the foundations, including loads, anchor bolt details and locations, and
required recesses.

10 Fabrication

10.1 Fabrication

10.1.1 Metal building system structural framing shall be fabricated in


accordance with the requirements of the AISC- "Specification for
Structural Steel for Buildings - Allowable Stress and Plastic Design" or
AISC – "Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for
Structural Steel Buildings".

10.1.2 Welding procedures and individual welders shall be qualified in


accordance with the requirements of ANSI/AWS D1.1 or AWS D1.3
for sheet steel. All welding procedures and welding performance
qualification records shall be made available to the Buyer's Inspector
for review. All welders must be properly qualified for the weld
procedure of the type of welding performed.

10.1.3 All fabricated structural steel shapes such as beams, columns, channels
or tubes shall be either hot rolled, full penetration or double-sided fillet
welded. Single-sided fillet welded structural shapes are not permitted.

10.2 Piece Marking and Identification

All parts and bundles of identical parts shall be clearly marked for identification.
Bolts and fasteners shall be packaged according to type, size, and length. Loose
nuts and washers shall be packaged according to size. The shipping documents
shall include a master packing list which shows the quantity, description and
piece mark of the various parts.

10.3 Inspection and Testing

10.3.1 All NDT procedures shall be submitted to the Inspection Department /


Operations Inspection Division (OID) ASNT Level-III for acceptance
prior to work commencing.

10.3.2 The Buyer has the Right to inspect all materials and workmanship, and
shall have unrestricted entry to the shop of the PEB Manufacturer at all
times while work is being performed. The Buyer may reject improper,
inferior, defective, or unsuitable materials and workmanship. All
materials and workmanship rejected shall be repaired or replaced by
the PEB Manufacturer as directed by the Buyer. The company
inspector shall have access to the vendor's facilities to see that SAES-
H-100 quality elements are in place prior to and during blasting,
priming and coating operations.

10.3.3 The Inspection Test Plan (ITP) shall be provided for review and
approval by the company inspector.

10.3.4 Inspection and testing shall conform to this Specification and Saudi
Aramco Inspection Requirements Form 175-120200 attached to the
Purchase Order.

10.3.5 Welding procedures and individual welders shall be qualified in


accordance with the requirements of ANSI/AWS D1.1/D1.1M or
ANSI/AWS D1.3 as appropriate. All welding procedures and welding
performance qualification records shall be made available to the
Buyer's Inspector for review.

10.3.6 Inspection of welding shall be performed in accordance with the


Structural Welding Code, ANSI/AWS D1.1/D1.1M. Ultrasonic testing
may be substituted for radiography if approved by Saudi Aramco
Inspection.
a) All welds shall have 100% visual inspection performed per
ANSI/AWS D1.1. In addition, any strikes, gouges, and other
indications of careless workmanship (such as surface porosity)
shall be removed by grinding.
b) The butt-welded flange sections for all primary load-bearing
members shall be 100% radiographed at the weld. Primary load-
bearing members shall be defined as the main frames and any
members that are part of the lateral load carrying system.
c) Secondary members such as purlins, girts or rafters that are not
part of the main sway frame, the butt-welds can be tested as
follows; 10% of the buttwelds of each days production (randomly
selected) shall have radiographic tests performed on the welds.
d) The minimum percent coverage of the specified NDT method
may be increased (at any level up to 100%) if, in the opinion of
the Company Inspector, the welds are of questionable

workmanship or NDT indicates an excessive number of defects.


Additional or alternative NDT methods may be used at the
discretion of the Company Inspector in order to assist in
determining the type or extent of defects.

10.3.7 Material test reports for each heat of structural steel, each lot of high-
strength and ASTM A307 bolts shall be available for review by the
Buyer. Material test reports shall conform to EN 10204, Type 3.1.

10.3.8 The Buyer may require a quantity of representative samples of bolt


assemblies which the PEB Manufacturer shall supply to the Buyer for
testing. Testing in accordance with ASTM F606 or ASTM F606M
will be at the Buyer's expense.

10.3.9 If any damage is discovered, or any parts, components, or


documentation are missing or otherwise defective, the occurrence shall
be immediately reported to the Buyer in writing.

10.3.10 Shop inspection may include, but not be limited to the following:

Verification of conformance of materials with this Specification and


the drawings. The limits of acceptability and repair of surface
imperfections for structural steel shall be in accordance with
ASTM A6 / ASTM A6M.

10.3.11 Inspection of high-strength bolted connections shall be in accordance


with AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or
ASTM A490 Bolts.

10.3.12 The buyer reserves the right to inspect and reject all galvanized steel in
accordance with ASTM A123/A123M and ASTM E376.

10.3.13 All web and flange splices shall be spot radiographed per AWS D1.1.

10.3.14 Additional welding inspection beyond that required by the contract or


purchase order may be requested by the Saudi Aramco Inspection
Department under the guidelines established per AWS D1.1.

10.3.15 Saudi Aramco's inspection and acceptance of the material shall not
relieve the Vendor of his responsibility to comply with all
requirements of the order and material specification, including but not
limited to the requirement that all components shall properly fit when
the building is erected.

11 Drawings and Calculations

11.1 Unless otherwise specified by the Company, the following drawings shall be
furnished:

11.1.1 Proposal Drawings and Technical Specifications

Two copies of the building drawings and technical specifications are to


be included in Vendors formal proposal. These drawings are for
proposal evaluations and become property of the Company.

The Vendor shall list in his proposal any deviations from this SAMSS,
and shall state what he intends to furnish as part of the contract.
Failure to list exceptions, if any, shall be construed as acceptance by
the Vendor of these Specifications.

11.1.2 For Approval Drawings

Five sets of preliminary drawings composed of roof framing plans,


elevations, and sections through the building shall be furnished for
approval of the Company.

Fabrication of any part of the metal building system by the Vendor


prior to receiving approved plans, is done at no liability to the
Company.

11.1.3 Erection Drawings

Five copies of certified erection drawings for the Metal Building


System shall be furnished by the Vendor to the Buyer. Such drawings
and erection instructions shall identify all individual parts of the metal
building system in sufficient detail to permit proper erection and
installation of said parts.

11.1.4 Anchor Bolt Plan

Submit within two weeks after award of contract a drawing that clearly
shows the size, location and projection of all anchor bolts for the metal
building system components and the location and size of any
foundation block-outs that are required. The minimum anchor bolt size
shall be 20 mm (¾"). All anchor bolts shall be furnished with double
nuts and the projection of the anchor bolt shall be sufficient for two
nuts. Unfactored column reactions (magnitude and direction - broken
down by individual load case), and base plate dimensions are also to be
included.

11.1.5 All drawings shall be made using SI Metric system of units, unless
instructed otherwise in writing by the Buyer.

11.2 Drawings not Provided

Detailed shop drawings of individual parts of the metal building system are not
required to be furnished by the Vendor unless requested by the Company.

11.3 Design Calculations

Design calculations shall be assembled in an orderly manner, checked and shall


be subject to periodic review as requested by the Company and as required for
the approval of Vendor's drawings.

11.3.1 The building structural design calculations shall include a summary of


all loads and load combinations considered in the design and a clear
statement of design assumptions. All computer models shall be
accompanied by sketches that show joint and member numbers,
support conditions, and loadings. All design information shall be
based on checked calculations.

11.3.2 Summary Sheet for Deflections and Drifts: A summary sheet shall be
provided listing the maximum actual deflections in all items such as
purlins, girts, crane beams, jib cranes and floor beams compared with
the corresponding allowable values. The maximum longitudinal and
transverse drifts of the building shall be listed and compared with
corresponding allowable values.

11.3.3 Load Derivations: The calculations shall show the derivation of all
loads such as roof and floor, dead and live loads, crane loads and all
wind and earthquake loads as applicable. The calculations shall derive
all such loads used in the calculations as input for computer analysis so
that any one load used in the input can be traced back in the load
derivation.

When roof or floor metal decking is used as a diaphragm to carry


lateral forces, both the metal deck and the deck attachments to the
building frame shall be designed to transfer the lateral forces and shall
comply with the requirements of AISI, "Design of Light Gage Steel
Diaphragms".

11.3.4 The design of all built-up and hot-rolled steel members shall comply
with the AISC - "Manual of Steel Construction, Allowable Stress
Design - Ninth Edition" or AISC – "Load and Resistance Factor
Design Specification for Structural Steel Buildings".

11.3.5 The design of all cold-formed steel members shall comply with the
AISI - “Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual.”.

12 Packing and Shipping

12.1 Packing shall be done in accordance with Company's packing specification


No.18. (not applicable for buildings manufactured in-Kingdom.)

12.2 Sandwich panels shall be packaged for delivery in banded stacks with suitable
foam or cardboard separators between each panel to prevent damage to the
finished paint surfaces. The bands shall also be prevented from damaging the
panels. Structural steel members shall be suitably separated by timber or similar
during transport and storage.

12.3 Bolts, Nuts and Washers shall be shipped prior to or with the first lot of
structural steel. Anchor bolts shall be shipped in time to accommodate the
construction schedule for the building foundations.
