AW139 v2.

1
P3D v4 & v5®

!!! BEFORE TO START !!!

Credits and licenses for using version 2.1 are the same as the previous version 2.0
and are described in the AW139 v2.0 manual included in this package.

INTRODUCTION
In early 2019 I first tried on my Prepar3Dv4 the AW139v2.0 Beta Freeware project
developed by ICARO/Carlos Palacio. The performance of the Model and the recent
updates of the P3Dv4 and v5 convinced me to work on the project, to improve the
level of realism. Using my knowledge in the real flight and with the essential help of
Carlos Palacio, I decided to develop a new version.
The AW139 ICARO/Carlos Palacio native project is an Open Source Freeware product
developed to give anyone the opportunity to improve it, therefore, version 2.1 is
based on my personal interpretation, so, for any advice, criticism or detail regarding
just only this version, refer to me helicopterx1@libero.it . I hope you'll like it.

SIM SETTING

In the v2.1 flight dynamics have been developed in a specific module, to use
correctly on the flight simulator it's recommended to set these realism options both
for P3Dv4 or P3Dv5

Some key shortcuts are used to manage the Beep Trim and the FTR (Force Trim
Release) on the cyclic control, to avoid a conflict with the combinations assigned in
P3D, make sure that these shortcuts are free:

- CTRL + F12 (Beep Trim Dn)

- CTRL + F11 (Beep Trim Up)
- CTRL + F10 (Beep Trim Right)
- CTRL + F9 (Beep Trim Left)
- CTRL + F8 (Force Trim Release OFF)
- F8 (Force Trim Release ON)

9
------------------------------

INSIDE THE CABIN

When P3D is started, the first flight by default is with the engines started on IDLE,
this to give the possibility to fly without pass through all the procedures. When the
helicopter is loaded a screen like the one below will appear with the engines in IDLE
and the FMS panel opened with the cursor blinking on MENU, it will be easy to enter
and choose between the various options. For those who want to perform all the
procedures from scratch, I recommend to go on MENU, opening the checklist and
then click to Cold & Dark.

10
------------------------------

2D PANELS

Many functions have been assigned exclusively to 2D panels, to access them from
the Virtual Cockpit follow the image below

11

FMS - UPDATES

The initial procedures for set the FMS are described in the previous manual, here
you will find only the updates

On the third PERF INIT page shown below (Keys: PERF / K1L / NEXT / NEXT) it is now
possible to add or reduce payload and fuel for both tanks.
- Max Fuel: 1272 kg *
- Max Payload: 570 kg *
- Max Gross Weight 6400 kg *
14
in R2 / R3 / R4 the weight must be added like this, otherwise an error message will
be shown*:
- STR F/A = 000/000
- ROW 1/2/3 = 000/000/000
- HOIST/HOOK = 000/000
- REM WT ( remaining addable weight )

* If a total weight greater than 6400 kg is added, an error message will be shown:
- EXCEEDS MAX GROSS WEIGHT
if the number sequence is compiled incorrectly, an error message is shown:
- INVALID ENTRY

The ATC function has been added to the left of the RADIO button, when pressed the
ATC Menu window opens and the FMS switches to the RADIO page. In this state, the
FMS numeric keypad execute ATC communications. If ATC is pressed again the ATC
Menu panel will close but as long as the RADIO page is open, the numeric keypad
will always perform ATC communications.

15
The CLR (clear) key now deletes a single character at time, to delete more keep left
click pressed, if you want to delete all characters single right click.

The display Dimmer has been added in the 2D panel, now it is possible to raise or
lower the brightness separately from that for the PFD and MFD.

To Open and Close the FMS 2D panel just click in the middle of the display both to
Virtual Cockpit or 2D panel.

the XPDR and ADF Box when activated show the selected digits with white color,
this makes it easier to type with the knobs.

16
HOIST CONTROLLER

To open the Hoist Controller Panel Right click on the MFD in the Virtual Cockpit or
'Shift+3'. To perform SAR operations with the Winch there is a panel dedicated to
the Winch Operator. If the 'COM CREW' button is activated from Hoist Controller or
from the 'Communication Panel' the voice operator communicates all the phases of
the rescue operation.

board, after that the cable is ready to be used again.
At the top right of the Hoist Controller there is the Searching Light. Pressing the
switch in the center and the light turns on and goes straight down, the green led will
indicate the status, if press again the light turns off and returns to the horizontal
position. When the search light is on and loaded, move the switch in each direction
to direct the Searching Light on the target.
At the bottom left there is the WTR: when the helicopter is in HOV mode, the pilot
can activate the WTR command via AFCS panel to allow at the Winch Operator to
position the helicopter on the target. The fixed green LED in the Hoist Controller and
WTR text in the PFD will show the status.
At the end of the Rescue Operations, to disable the winch and close the door it is
necessary that the cable is completely rewound and the 'cable ft' display shows '000'
otherwise the door remains opened and the 'PWR' LED flashes orange and the 'cable
ft' display 'shows CBL-UP in yellow.

17
The different Led colors on the 'HOOK' button show the status:
- Solid Green = Hook Enabled

MFD and PFD PANEL

To open the MFD Panel 'Shift+8', to open the PFD Panel 'Shift+9'

From previous versions, the PFD and MFD displays have been completely
redesigned: menus, symbols, colors, fonts, warnings, maps and interaction with the
FMS have been improved to increase the FPS's. Some errors in the electrical panel
(Generators / Alternators values ) have also been corrected but will be definitively
revised in future updates. The entire management of the engines, transmission and
rotor revolutions work simultaneously and the degradation of these causes a
reduction in performance. Each phase of the turbines, transmission and rotor
revolutions have a specific sound and vibration (visible and audible in the virtual
cockpit) that allows the pilot to understand and prevent errors during maneuvers.

OEI (One Engine Inoperative)

When an engine fails, performance and operating limits are reduced. If a 2.5m value
(yellow, flashing red or solid red) is shown, the Maximum Continuous Power limits
have been reached, so maintenance is required.

31
In the SYSTEM menu on the Maintenance page, the damage can be reset via the
CCD Panel.

The Maintenance Page currently is in Beta phase to reset Fail Engines and '2.5m'
OEIs, in the next revision it will include the management of all systems.

32
PI ( Power Index )
The PI gauge shows the actual power delivered by the engines, in percent, with
respect to the power available. The legend shown on top of the analogue scale (TQ,
ITT or NG) represents the engine parameter that is limiting the power and is
independent for each engine. For example, one engine can be TQlimited and the
other can be ITT limited.

In the new MFD Menus have been added:

- System:
- Maintenance
- Cameras (the index of the 4 main cameras, selectable via CCD)
- Flir Camera ( maneuverable via lower panel on the CCD or via
Moving Map)
- Cam 1-Hoist
- Cam 2-Hook
- Cam 3-Tail
- Cam 4-Landing Gear
- Plan:
- Designator ( maneuverable via CCD ) *
- Map:
- TAWS ( redesigned )
- Designator ( maneuverable via CCD ) *

33
* Designator:
The Designator is a customizable waypoint mapping system. When the MAP or PLAN
page is selected in the MFD, the Designator item can be selected in the drop-down
menu, a green square appears on the display with the symbol of the internal knob of
the CCD next to it. Within 20 seconds from when it is displayed, by moving the
joystick of the CCD in the four directions, it is possible to position the cursor
anywhere on the map. To confirm the selected point, press the Enter button on the
CCD and the coordinates of the selected point will appear in the FMS Scratchpad. By
pressing buttons L1 to L5 in the flight plan of the FMS, the point will be added
between the two already existing waypoints. Each new waypoint will have the
abbreviation '* LL' and the progressive number. It is possible to add a 'wpt
designator' at any point also by moving between the waypoints selected with the
external knob of the CCD or with the keys from L1 to L5 of the FMS. If the LH Button
of the CCD is already selected and the MFD is on MAP or PLAN, pressing LH twice
activates the designator, pressing it again deactivates it.

in the link below a video tutorial showing how the Designator works

https://youtu.be/RjeyBfQtRJs

34
Ground Velocity Vector
The hover symbology automatically appears on the PFD when HOV mode is engaged
or when the HSI button on RIC panel is selected on HOV mode. When the aircraft
ground speed is greater than 80 knots, the velocity vector is displayed as a dotted
line, under 80knots the line is solid. A small circle is placed at the end of the velocity
vector to highlight the end of the vector.

------------------------------
35
BEEP TRIM MOUSE CONTROLS

At the top of the Cyclic Control and Collective control there are the four and five
position directional switches, positioning the mouse on the switches, various
functions can be performed.

- Cyclic Beep Trim Switch:

- If the ATT mode is engaged and FTR is unpressed, the four directional
buttons allow the pilot to trim Pitch and Roll axes.
- If IAS is engaged on the AFCS, the two Up and Down directional buttons
(Mouse Wheel) increase and decrease the indicated air speed.
- If HDG is engaged on the AFCS, the two directional buttons Left and Right
allow the pilot to change the heading degrees.
- If the Middle Button is pressed below 75 knots, Hover mode is activated
and the helicopter gradually reaches zero knots, the four directional
buttons allow the pilot to change longitude and latitude.

36
- Coll/Yaw Beep Trim Selector
- If the ATT mode is active and ALT, VS or RTH are activated, the two
directional buttons (Wheel Up-Down) allow the pilot to Increase and
Decrease the Altitude.
- If the HOV mode is disabled, the two directional buttons (left-right) on the
pilot option change the CRS (course).
- If HOV mode is active on the AFCS, the two direction buttons (left-right)
allow the pilot to change the HDG (course).

- Searching light selector

- if the middle mouse button is pressed the Searching Light turns on and the
spotlight is positioned horizontally forward. If press again, the light switches
off and the headlight returns to rest position.
- If the Searching Light is on, the four directional buttons (Mouse Wheel Up-
Down and Button Left-Right) allow the pilot to direct the light beam.

37
NEW DYNAMICS

One of the major limitations of Prepar3D (such as the old FSX/FS9...) is the lack of a
good flight model for helicopters. In these years, many third-party developers have
written dedicated modules to improve flight dynamics but often too 'heavy' for
medium performance computers. Today P3D in versions v4 and v5 has greatly
improved the graphic aspect and introduced Simconnect modules that allow you to
write any value on flight dynamics and engine performance.

In this version of AW139 I have written and re-edited some specific values essential
for the dynamics of the helicopter, based to weights, balances, speed, weather
conditions, rotor revolutions and power delivered by the engines. The AW139 is a
new generation fully 'Hands Off' servo assisted helicopter but, like any helicopter, it
has limitations related to its 'unstable nature'. Anti Torque, Gyroscopic Precession,
Transalting Tendency, Ground Effect, Ground Resonance, increase and decrease
rotor revolutions relative to the applied power,etc... are all dynamic values present
in any helicopter and therefore, even on the AW139 they must be respected to
prevent errors during the flight phases , considering the increase or decrease in
performance, with and without Autopilot.

TT ( Translating Tendency )
When both autopilots are disengaged below 50kts Ground Speed, the helicopter
undergoes Translating Tendency ( the Translating Tendency is the movement of the
helicopter to the right due to the combination of main rotor torque and tail-rotor
anti-torque) , generally when the helicopter exceeds 40/50kts, due to the
aerodynamic structure, the TT is canceled but, as long as this speed is not exceeded,
the pilot must contrast the TT with the cyclic command.

38
When one of the two autopilots is engaged and if the Hover mode and the FTR
(Force Trim Release) on the cyclic are disengaged, below 3Kts GS the Transalting
Tendency is compensated by the autopilot. Exceeded 3Kts GS the pilot has manual
control again.

39
Anti-Torque
In the AW139 the torque compensation is almost completely automatic but the
amount of pedal to be used in stationary flight conditions or below 50 / 60Kts is
always relative to the amount of collective pitch used. Takeoff weight, altitude,
temperature and engines power may require a specific compensation with the
pedals.

------------------------------

40
DAMAGE (Beta)

When a collision is detected, the simulation pauses and a 2D panel shows the
detected damage. On the left of the panel you can request:
- RESET FLIGHT (useful for repositioning the helicopter horizontally)
- RELOAD AIRCRAFT (reload the helicopter to the initial state in IDLE MODE)
- REQUEST SIM EXIT (opens the P3D meu)
- SIM EXIT (closes the simulator)
- FLIGHT MAP ( opens the map to position the helicopter at the coordinates,
altitude, bow and desired speed )
- FLIGHT MAP ( opens the map to posiotion the helicopter at the coordinates,
altitude, heading and speed desired )
- REFRESH SCENERY (reload the scenery)

currently this addon is in Beta Test, it detects landings at a speed higher than 2000ft
per minute or when the main or tail rotor hits the ground. In the future I will develop
many more functions ...

41
------------------------------

NVG BACKLIT

The backlit of instruments are NVG but if you prefer white color, you can replace the
textures from the previous version 2.0

42
NEW LIVERIES

With this new version, seven new liveries have been added. They all belong to the
Italian police and rescue corps and were created by the genius of Matteo Mattiucci.

In some Italian versions of AW139 the winch is single and the nose is short and
without FLIR CAM, if in the future new models are made, these liveries will be added.

43
A Very Special Thanks to Carlos Palacio for developing
the 'dll' module to manage the CAMs and for all the
useful advice to develop this new version. Without his
help I would never have started this project.
I also thank all the ICARO Team and all those who
contributed to the development of the previous versions
for FS9 and FSX.

Another great special thanks to Sérgio Costa of
