ITEM TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT ITEM RECOMMENDED
MATERIALS
09-007 Aluminum Oxide Sandpaper
13-001 Coating
2. Flight Compartment Seat Attach Fittings
A. As the seat attach fittings wear with use, their strength is reduced. Excessive wear of the seat attach fittings may cause the
crew seat to become unstable. Wear for the seat attach fittings have been established to determine when replacement is
necessary (Ref. Figure 201). Wear Limits are checked at the intervals specified in Chapter 05. Replacement of worn seat
attach fitting must be accomplished if wear limit is exceeded. Inspect the entire length of each seat track for wear.
B. If gouging or chaffing is present and the depth and width does not exceed the limits shown proceed with the following
repair procedure.
CAUTION: Do not sand any deeper than the initial gouge or chafe.
(1) Remove any sharp edges using aluminum oxide sandpaper (09-007, Table 201).
(2) Apply coating (13-001, Table 201) on any exposed surface.
C. Flight Compartment Seat Track Wear Limits
(1) The seat track must be replaced if wear limits shown (Ref. Figure 201) are exceeded. A slight gouge in the forward
and aft direction of the upper seat track surface caused by the lock pin while sliding the crew seat, is not detrimental
to the operation of the seat provided the gouge does not exceed wear limits.
D. Flight Compartment Seat Lockpin Wear Limits
(1) Replace the lock pin if the diameter of the pin engagement into the seat track is less than the minimum dimension
shown in (Ref. Figure 201, Detail B).
E. Crew Seat Support Channel Wear Limits
(1) Check each seat support channel for wear. Replace the seat support channel is any measurement is less than the
minimum dimension shown in (Ref. Figure 201, Detail C).
F. Corrosion On The Flight Compartment Seat Track
(1) Inspect the entire length of each seat track for corrosion. Refer to Figure 201 for wear limits which have been
established for the flight compartment seat tracks. If corrosion is found on the seat tracks, refer to Chapter 20-09-00
for corrosion removal and treatment.
(2) If the limIts shown in Figure 201 can not be met, contact Textron Aviation Technical Support.

1. Description
A. Airplane serials LJ-548 and After and LW-1 and After are equipped with an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) to assist
in the tracking and recovery of the airplane and crew in the event of a crash or an emergency landing. Airplane serials LJ-
548 thru LJ-901 and LW-1 thru LW-333 are equipped with Collins/Communications Components Corporation ELTs.
Narco ELTs are installed on airplane serials LJ-902 and After, on LW-334 and After and on earlier airplanes equipped
with Kit No. 101-3046-1. The Artex C406-2 ELT's are installed on airplanes LJ-1404 and After and prior earlier airplanes
with Kit No. 90-3402-1 or -3 installed.
B. The ELT is mounted in the right side of the aft fuselage at approximately FS 340.00. An antenna is located on top of the aft
fuselage at approximately FS 352.00, and an access hole with a spring loaded cover is located in the right aft fuselage
skin adjacent to the transmitter providing access for manual activation of the ELT.
C. The output frequencies are 121.5 and 243.0 MHz, simultaneously. Range is approximately line of sight. The ARM-OFF-ON
switch is located on the transmitter, and controls the operation of the set. The ON position turns the set on for testing, and
the ARM position actuates the set operate automatically upon impact. A reset switch, located on the forward end of the
transmitter, resets the transmitter to the ARM position in the event the impact switch is accidentally triggered. Airplane
serials LJ-819 thru LJ-901, LW-317 thru LW-333 and earlier airplanes with Kit No. 101-3039-1 installed have a remote
REARM-ARM-XMIT switch located adjacent to the ELT in the aft fuselage. The XMIT position turns the set on for testing
and the ARM position actuates the set to operate automatically upon impact. The REARM position resets the transmitter
to the ARM position in the event the impact switch is accidentally triggered. An optional installation that locates a remote
switch, placarded ARM-XMIT, on the instrument panel is available for airplanes serials LJ-902 and After and LW-334 and
After. Airplanes with Kit No. 101-3046-1 installed have a remote switch, placarded ARM-XMIT, located adjacent to the
ELT in the aft fuselage. The remote ARM-XMIT switch is a momentary switch that enables manual activation of the ELT for
testing while the unit is in the airplane.
D. The Artex C406-2 ELT's also transmits an additional frequency of 406.025, which is used by orbiting satellites to assist in
determining airplane location. This activation is independent of the remote switch setting or availability of airplane power.

EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER (ELT) - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

(LJ-548 And After; LW-1 and After)
1. Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
CAUTION: The ELT switch should not be turned ON unless the ELT is connected to its associated antenna or a 50-
ohm dummy load.
A. Maintenance on the ELT is normally limited to replacing the battery. The following is a list of the various conditions which
warrant battery replacement:
(1) Visual inspection shows signs of leakage, corrosion or unsecure leads.
NOTE: The useful life of the battery is the length of time which the battery may be stored without
losing its ability to continuously operate the ELT for 48 hours. The information on battery life
and replacement is included in the data furnished with each ELT, and is usually placarded on
the battery.
(2) Elapsed replacement date noted on the battery case (this date represents 50% of the useful life of the battery).
(3) After any emergency use.
(4) After one cumulative hour of use.
(5) After operation of unknown duration.
CAUTION: Avoid storage of batteries at temperatures in excess of 55°C (130°F).
(6) If transmitter is stored in an area where the temperature is normally above 38°C (100°F), the battery life will be
shortened.
NOTE: Replacement batteries should be obtained only from ELT manufacturers, airplane
manufacturers or other acceptable suppliers, since the condition and useful life of over-the-
counter batteries, such as those sold for flashlights, portable radios, etc., are usually
unknown.

A. Test
Generally, tests will be performed following maintenance or repairs to the TR70-09/-17 ELT to determine its operational
capability. Testing the TR70-09/-17 ELT, if improperly performed, could trigger false alerts, create frequency jamming, and
interfere with a bona fide emergency transmission. Federal Communications Regulations require that this testing be
performed in a screened or shielded test room or in a test enclosure that will hold the TR70-09/-17 ELT with the antenna
fully extended.
NOTE: Tests should not be longer than three audio sweeps. One audio sweep may be defined as
amplitude modulating the carrier with an audio frequency sweeping downward over a range of not
less than 700 Hz, within the range 1600 to 300 Hz, and a sweep repetition rate between two and
four Hz. Tests should be conducted only in the first five minutes of any hour. If operational tests
must be made at a time other than the first five minutes of the hour. The tests must be coordinated
with the nearest FAA tower or flight service station.
(1) Turn COMM-1 ON and tune to 121.5 MHz.
(2) Turn COMM-1 to the SPEAKER position.
(3) Turn the TR70-09/-17 ELT switch to ON and monitor the signal. On airplanes equipped with a remote switch, it may
be momentarily flipped to the XMIT position and the TR70-09/-17 ELT signal monitored.
NOTE: If there is no audible signal, the battery is probably disconnected or dead, assuming that the
VHF transceiver is operational.
(4) Move the TR70-09/-17 ELT switch to the OFF position. If the remote switch is being utilized to test the unit, the switch
must be released to return to the ARM position. The audio signal should disappear completely.
(5) Move the TR70-09/-17 ELT switch to the ARM position; there should be no signal in this position. If a signal is heard,
the impact switch has been activated and must be reset.
(6) To reset the impact switch, firmly press the reset switch on the front of the TR70-09/-17 ELT and check to that no
signal is heard on COMM-1.

ARM position arms an impact switch which will actuate the system automatically upon impact of the airplane. The ON position is
momentary and is used to test the operation of the system. The OFF position prevents the operation of the system.
The remote switch is placarded ARM-OFF-ON. The ARM position actuates the ELT-10 to operate automatically upon impact.
The ON position turns the ELT-10 on for testing and the OFF position prevents operation of the system.
In the eventuality that the ELT system antenna or cable has failed, the ELT-10 can be removed from the airplane and used as a
portable device.

ARTEX ELT 110-4/NARCO ELT 910 EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Description
The airplane is equipped with an Artex emergency locator transmitter ELT 110-4 to assist in the tracking and recovery of the
airplane and crew in the event of a crash or emergency landing. The ELT system consists of a battery powered ELT 110-4, an
antenna and a remote switch. The output frequencies of the ELT 110-4 are 121.5 and 243.0 MHz, simultaneously. Range is
approximately line of sight.
The ELT 110-4 is mounted on the right hand side of the fuselage at a point approximately 4 feet aft of the aft pressure bulkhead.
An access hole with a spring-loaded cover is installed adjacent to the transmitter to provide access to a remote switch for
manual activation of the system. An antenna for the system is mounted on top of the fuselage under the vertical stabilizer at a
point approximately 7 inches aft of the ELT 110-4.
The ELT 110-4 is equipped with a switch which controls the system operation. The control switch is placarded ON-OFF. When
the control switch is in the ON position, the ELT 110-4 will transmit for testing or manual operation. Placing the control switch in
the OFF position stops transmission.
The remote switch is located adjacent to the ELT 110-4 in the aft fuselage. The remote switch is placarded ARMED/RESET-
ON. The remote switch is used to either arm or manually actuate the ELT 110-4. When the remote switch is placed in the ON
position, the ELT 110-4 will transmit. Placing the remote switch in the ARMED/RESET position, arms the ELT 110-4 and allows
it to operate automatically upon impact of the airplane.
In some airplanes, the remote switch is replaced with a remote switch panel in the left cockpit sidewall. The remote switch panel
contains a remote switch and XMIT light. The remote switch is placarded ON-ARM. Placing the remote switch in the ARM
position, arms the ELT 110-4 and allows it to operate automatically upon impact of the airplane. The ON position is used to
manually activate the ELT 110-4. If the ELT 110-4 is activated accidentally, it can be reset by moving the remote switch to the
ON position and then immediately back to the ARM position. The XMIT light on the remote switch panel flashes when the ELT
110-4 is activated.
The antenna for the ELT 110-4 can either be a blade antenna or a rod antenna. The antenna can transmit at frequencies of
121.5 and 243.0 MHz. The antenna receives ELT 110-4 inputs through a BNC connector.

ARTEX ELT C406-2 EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description
The Artex emergency locator transmitter ELT C406-2 system is designed to meet the requirements of TSO C91a and C126.
The system consists of a battery-powered ELT C406-2, an alert horn, an antenna and a remote switch panel. The ELT C406-2
and the alert horn are located in the right aft fuselage area. The antenna for the ELT C406-2 is mounted on the aft fuselage. The
remote switch panel is located on the left cockpit sidewall next to the OAT gage. The system is independent from other airplane
systems except for the XMIT light on the remote switch panel, which is on the hot battery bus and the edge lighted panel which is
controlled by a rheostat switch on the overhead panel placarded SIDE PANEL - OFF - BRT.
The ELT C406-2 is a dual output unit. The 121.5/243.0 MHZ section of the transmitter is contained in a module with the 406.025
MHZ transmitter. The top circuit board contains the microprocessor that controls the module and all ELT functions.
The ELT C406-2 is equipped with a switch which controls the operation of the unit. The control switch is placarded ON-OFF.
When the control switch is in the OFF position, the ELT C406-2 will automatically activate on impact. The ON position of the
control switch is used to manually activate the ELT C406-2. If the ELT C406-2 is activated accidentally, it can be reset by
moving the control switch to the ON position and then immediately back to the OFF position.
The remote switch panel contains a remote switch and a XMIT light. The remote switch is placarded ON-ARM. Placing the
remote switch in the ARM position, arms the ELT C406-2 and allows it to operate automatically upon impact of the airplane.
The ON position is used to manually activate the ELT C406-2. If the ELT C406-2 is activated accidentally, it can be reset by
moving the remote switch to the ON position and then immediately back to the ARM position. The XMIT light on the remote
switch panel flashes when the ELT C406-2 is activated.
The antenna for the ELT C406-2 is a dual input antenna. The antenna may be a blade antenna or a rod antenna. The antenna
can transmit at frequencies of 121.5, 243.0 and 406.025 MHz. The antenna receives ELT C406-2 inputs through a BNC and a
TNC connector. The BNC connector receives the 121.5 and 243.0 MHz signals from the ELT C406-2. The TNC connector
receives the 406.025 MHz signals from the ELT C406-2.
Upon activation, the ELT C406-2 will sound the alert horn and transmit a sweeping tone on 121.5 and 243.0 MHz.
Approximately 47 seconds later, an additional frequency of 406.025 MHz is also transmitted. This is used by orbiting satellites
to assist in determining airplane location. This activation is independent of the remote switch setting or availability of airplane
power.

A. Maintenance
CAUTION: If the ELT C406-2 is stored in an area where the temperature is normally above 100° F (38° C), the
battery life will be shortened. Avoid storage of batteries in an environment with temperatures in
excess of 130° F (55° C).
Maintenance on the ELT C406-2 is normally limited to replacing the battery. The following is a list of conditions which
mandate battery replacement:
• Visual inspection shows signs of leakage, corrosion or loose leads
• Elapsed replacement date on the battery case (this date represents 50% of the useful life of the battery)
NOTE: The useful life of the battery is the length of time which the battery may be stored without
loosing its ability to continuously operate the ELT C406-2 for 48 hours.
• After any emergency use
• After one cumulative hour of use
• When prior history of the battery is unknown
Information on battery life and replacement criteria is furnished in literature accompanying each ELT C406-2 and is usually
printed on the battery.
Replacement batteries should be obtained only from the ELT manufacturer, airplane manufacturer or approved suppliers.
The use of over-the-counter batteries such as those sold for flashlights, portable radios, etc. should be avoided as the prior
history and reliability of these batteries is unknown.

ARTEX ELT C406-2 EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER - ADJUSTMENT/TEST

1. Artex ELT C406-2 Emergency Locator Transmitter
A. Test
Generally, tests will be performed following maintenance or repairs to the ELT C406-2 to determine its operational
capability. Testing the ELT C406-2, if improperly performed, could trigger false alerts, create frequency jamming, and
interfere with a bona fide emergency transmission.
NOTE: Do not allow the test duration to exceed 5 seconds. The ELT C406-2 will transmit a 406.025 MHz
signal after the ELT C406-2 is active for approximately 47 seconds. The satellite system considers
the transmission to be a valid distress signal.
This procedure does not test the ELT C406-2 for transmission on the 406.025 MHz frequency. For
further information regarding the 406.025 MHz transmission frequency, refer to the Artex
Description, Operation, Installation and Maintenance Manual, Document No. 570-5000.
Tests should not be longer than three audio sweeps.
(1) Perform the following test within the first 5 minutes after the hour (UTC), as required by AC 43.13-1, Chapter 12, § 12-
22, Note 3.
(2) Make sure the airplane battery or external power is connected.
(3) Turn COMM-1 ON and tune to 121.5 MHz.
(4) Turn the speaker to the ON position on the audio panel.
(5) Turn the ELT C406-2 switch to ON and monitor the signal. On airplanes equipped with a remote switch, it may be
momentarily flipped to the ON position and the ELT C406-2 signal monitored. Make sure a distinctive downward
sweeping audio signal is heard, listen for 3 audible sweeps on the receiver, which takes about 1 second. The ELT
alert horn sounds and the XMIT light on the remote switch panel flashes continuously.
NOTE: If there is no audible signal, the battery is probably disconnected or dead, assuming that the
VHF transceiver is operational.
(6) Move the ELT C406-2 switch to the OFF position. If the remote switch is being utilized to test the unit, the switch must
be returned to the "ARM" (OFF) position. The audio signal should disappear completely, the ELT alert horn stops and
the XMIT light on the remote switch panel will stay on for approximately one second and then turn off.
B. ELT C406-2 Reset Procedure
NOTE: If the ELT C406-2 is activated accidently, it will need to be rest using the following procedure:
(1) Place the ELT control switch in the "ON" position.
(2) Return the switch to the "OFF" position.
(3) If the ELT is working properly, the LED will stay on for approximately 1 second and then turn off.
NOTE: A 5-flash error indication will occur if the ELT is programmed with a location protocol, since no
navigation input data is present.
C. ELT C406-2 G-Switch Functional Check
CAUTION: A jumper is required to perform this check. Due to the potential of physical damage if the jumper is
improperly installed, this step should only be performed by an experienced technician/mechanic.
(1) Perform the following test within the first 5 minutes after the hour (UTC), as required by AC 43.13-1, Chapter 12, § 12-
22, Note 3.
(2) Notify any nearby control tower of your intentions.
(3) Jumper ELT plug Pins 5 and 8.
NOTE: The ELT cannot be activated using this procedure unless Pins 5 and 8 on the ELT plug are
jumpered.

ARTEX ELT C406-2 EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER ANTENNA - ADJUSTMENT/TEST

1. Artex ELT C406-2 Emergency Locator Transmitter Antenna
A. Test
(1) Depress the GND COMM Switch to ON. Make sure that the COMM-1 control head is receiving power.
(2) Tune the VHF COMM Radio to 121.5 MHZ.
(3) Set audio switches to output COMM-1 audio in the cockpit speakers.
NOTE: The FAA/MOT provides free space for ELT transmission tests any time within the first five
minutes of any hour. The test time allowed is three sweeps of the warble tone, or
approximately one second.
(4) Set ELT C406-2 switch to ON for approximately one second or three sweeps of the tone.
NOTE: A delayed light illumination indicates the internal "G" Switch circuit is not working properly.
(5) The transmitted ELT C406-2 tone will be heard through the cockpit speakers and the red ELT XMT Light in the ELT
remote switch panel will immediately come on.
(6) Return ELT C406-2 switch to OFF. The transmitted ELT C406-2 tone shall stop and the ELT XMT Light will go out.
(7) Depress GND COMM switch to off.
