AGRICULTURAL CROPS

PRODUCTION NC I
HAZARD, RISK AND EXPOSURE
IN THE FARM
❑Agricultural crop production
deals with a lot of activities to be
done in different workplace.
❑While performing these
activities, we expose ourselves to
a lot of risk.
HAZARD, RISK AND EXPOSURE
IN THE FARM
❑Workplace hazard is a major
cause of accident, injury, or harm
to a worker who performs such
task.
❑These hazards should be the
major concern of all who are
involved in a certain job or work.
Definition of Hazard, Risk
and Exposure
HAZARD
➢defined as the potential for
harm, or adverse effect on an
employee’s health.
➢anything which may cause
injury or ill health to anyone at or
near a workplace.
Definition of Hazard, Risk
and Exposure
RISK
➢Likelihood that a hazard will cause
injury or ill health to anyone at or
near a workplace.
➢The level of risk increases when the
severity of the hazard and the
duration and frequency of exposure.
Definition of Hazard, Risk
and Exposure
EXPOSURE
➢occurs when a person comes
into contact with a hazard.
What are the classes of hazard?
Physical hazard
➢includes floors, stairs, work platforms, steps,
ladders, fire, falling objects, slippery surfaces,
manual handling (lifting, pushing, pulling),
excessively loud and prolonged noise,
vibration, heat and cold, radiation, poor
lighting, ventilation, air quality.
What are the classes of hazard?
Mechanical and/or electrical hazard
➢includes electricity, machinery,
equipment, and dangerous goods.
What are the classes of hazard?
Chemical hazards
➢includes chemical substances such as
acids or poisons and those that could lead
to fire or explosion, like reagents used in
laboratories, pesticides, herbicides,
cleaning agents, dusts and fumes from
various processes such as welding.
What are the classes of hazard?
Biological hazards
➢includes bacteria, viruses, mold,
insects, vermin, animals.
What are the classes of hazard?

GENERAL FARM TOOL SAFETY
❑Keeping tools in good working
condition is half the formula for
being safe. The other half is the
ability and awareness of the person
using the tools.
GENERAL FARM TOOL SAFETY

❑Tool failure causes some farm

accidents; however, most farm
accidents are caused by tired,
stressed, rushed, distracted, or
incompetent workers.
Checks are conducted on all
materials, tools and equipment
with insufficient or faulty items
reported to the supervisor.
Checking of Tools, Farm Implements and
Equipment
Pre-operative checking of tools, farm
implements and equipment
✓Select the right tool for the job.
✓Inspect all tools carefully for dull
blades, damaged handles, loose
heads, repair or replace as needed.
Pre-operative checking of tools, farm

✓Sharpen all cutting tools
before using and frequently
thereafter. A sharp tool is a
safer tool.
Pre-operative checking of tools, farm

✓Always wear safety glasses when
sharpening tools with a power

Pre-operative checking of tools, farm
implements and equipment
✓Wear sturdy gloves, long-sleeved
shirts, and long pants when
working with dense plant
materials. This is particularly
important for thorny or spiny
type plants such as cacti.
Suitable Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) is selected and
checked prior to use.
What is Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)?

➢It is worn to protect farm

workers from injury.
❑The Occupational Health
and Safety Act require
workers to wear personal
protective equipment based
on the hazards that they are
exposed to.
❑Employers must also ensure
that workers are trained in
the proper use and care of
PPE and that the worker
wears the equipment
properly.
