PRODUCTION NC I
WHAT IS PLANT PROPAGATION?

➢It is the process of reproducing

plants.
➢This can be done using planting
materials.
TYPES OF PROPAGATION
1. Sexual propagation
➢propagation by seeds (union of two
gametes).
TYPES OF PROPAGATION
2. Asexual propagation
➢use of vegetative parts (leaves, roots,
stems, modified parts) for propagation.
SEXUAL PROPAGATION
Remember that:
✓The first sets of leaves are called
cotyledons.
✓Monocots produce one seed
leaf.
✓Dicots produce two seed leaves.
✓True leaves are the second set
of leaves.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds

Varietal purity
➢ free from mixed varieties.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds
Germination and vigor
➢ seeds that germinate 90% will establish
more seedlings than those that germinate
only at 70%.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds

Mechanical purity
➢ pure seeds are free from mechanical
injury.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds

Uniformity of size
➢ seeds of uniform size are also more likely
to be similar in seedling vigor.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds
Free from seed-borne diseases
➢disease-free plants are expected to give
better field performance than infected
ones.
Characteristics of Good Quality Seeds
Free from mixture
➢must be free mixture with other seeds
and foreign matter.
Choosing the right variety
1. Adopted to local condition
2. High yielding
3. Tolerant to major pest
4. Tolerant to water submergence
and/or drought
Longevity of Seeds
Recalcitrant
➢short-lived seeds, viability is short, at
most a year.
Examples:
Mango, Jackfruit, Mangosteen, Durian,
Avocado, Citrus etc.
Longevity of Seeds
Orthodox
➢medium-lived seeds, viable for 2-3 years,
or perhaps 15 years provided seeds are
stored at low temperature and low
humidity.
Examples:
Corn, legumes etc.
Longevity of Seeds
Long-lived seeds
➢viable for 15-20 years or more
(ex. Hard seedcoat)
Examples:
Lotus
ASEXUAL PROPAGATION
Comparison of Sexual and Asexual
Propagation
SEXUAL PROPAGATION ASEXUAL PROPAGATION
• most economical • true-to-type
• fastest • allows production of plants
•Not true-to-type when propagation by seeds is
• takes a longer time to mature impossible
• tend to grow into large plants • smaller and early-bearer
• sex not determined • recommended for dioecious
plants
