MET 206
DYNAMICS
Examination 1

October 11, 2021

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This exam is closed-notes, closed-book (a provided equation sheet is attached to this exam).
2. Keep your eyes on your own paper. Any attempt to consult your neighbor’s paper will result in immediate
ejection from the exam and a score of zero.
3. Read each question carefully and make sure you answer all parts if it is a multipart question.
4. Keep your answers brief and to the point. If you can answer a question properly with one or two sentences,
writing a paragraph will not net you any extra points.
5. Although you will be evaluated on the technical correctness of sketched diagrams more than the quality of the
drawings, you should do your best work given the time constraints. Your answer is a graphical communication
to me and if I can’t read it or portions of it, you will not receive credit for it.
6. When you have completed the exam, please be certain your name is on all pages and turn the exam in.

Total: ___________ (100 pts)

(33 pts) 1. KINEMATIC RELATIONS

Neglecting the size of the ball, determine the magnitude of the basketball’s initial velocity and its velocity when it
passes through the basket. Assuming the net slows the ball momentarily to rest before it falls out the bottom of the net
to the ground, what speed will it first hit the ground (the net’s length is 0.4 m). Finally, determine the maximum height
above the court the ball reaches.

(33 pts) 2. RECTALINEAR MOTION

A sandbag is dropped from a balloon which is ascending vertically at constant speed of 7 m /s. If the bag is released with the same
upward velocity of 7 m/s when t = 0 and hits the ground when t = 10 s, determine the speed of the bag as it hits the ground and the
altitude of the balloon at this instant.

(34 pts) 3. ANGULAR MOTION

The car travels along the circular curve of radius r = 400 ft, at the instant shown the speed is v = 25 ft/s. If the
breaks are applied slowing the car at a = 1 ft/s 2. Determine the angular rate of rotation w of the radial line r and the
magnitude of car’s acceleration for this instant.
