Examination 3

April 22, 2016

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This exam is closed-notes, closed-book.

2. Keep your eyes on your own paper. Any attempt to consult your neighbor’s paper will result in immediate
ejection from the exam and a score of zero.
3. Read each question carefully and make sure you answer all parts if it is a multipart question.
4. Keep your answers brief and to the point. If you can answer a question properly with one or two sentences,
writing a paragraph will not net you any extra points.
5. Although you will be evaluated on the technical correctness of sketched diagrams more than the quality of the
drawings, you should do your best work given the time constraints. Your answer is a graphical communication
to me and if I can’t read it or portions of it, you will not receive credit for it.
6. When you have completed the quiz, please be certain your name is on all pages and turn the exam in.

2. A hoist for lifting lightweight building materials is shown. The pulley at B is frictionless, and the pulley at C is
driven by an electric motor rotating counterclockwise at a speed high enough to always cause slip between the
cable and pulley C. The cable has one full wrap around pulley C and continues to make contact with one-fourth of
the surface of pulley C, and the coefficients of static and kinetic friction are 0.25 and 0.2, respectively. If the cable
has negligible weight and the worker can apply a force of 50 lb, then determine the maximum weight that can be
loaded on the platform at D.

3. Given that the coefficient of friction for all surfaces is 0.15, what is the magnitude of the force P required to move a 45 kg
plate to the left if a 90 kg block is initially on top of it. Neglect friction of the pulley

In exam, 90 kg and 45 kg, rather than 80 kg and 40 kg. Also 0.15 coefficient of friction rather than 0.20 used in solution above.

Thus top N = 882.9 and F = 132.4 = T

Bottom N = 1324.4 and F = 198.7

Therefore P = 463.5
