ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. (a) The use of rivet to joint panels for the heavy-duty truck is very common. As a
technician in a truck manufacturing company, you have been given a task to
design a join of two panels as shown in Figure 1.1. Given that the allowable
shearing stress of the rivet is 100 MPa and the diameter, d of the rivet is 40 mm.
i. The size of the plate used is 150 mm width, 300 mm long and 10 mm height.
Predict the allowable stress for bearing in the plate.

(6 marks)
ii. If the maximum tensile stress in the plate is designed to be 50 MPa. Identify
the right size of the rivet to be used in the joint.

(b) To measure the strength of three different materials (X, Y, Z) test specimens of
diameter 20 mm with gage length of 50 mm as shown in Figure 1.2 had been
fabricated from each material to be tested in tension. It was found that the gage
length after failure were 55, 64 and 81 mm respectively. It is also observed that
the diameter of the cross section changed to 18, 16 and 10 mm respectively.
i. Analyze all data given to determine the percent elongation of each specimen.

ii. The changed of elongation affected the change of cross section area of the
specimens after failure. Determine the percent reduction in area of each
specimen.

iii. By analyzing answers in Q1. (b) i and ii, categorize each material as brittle
or ductile.

Q2. (a) Company Melur Sdn Bhd is a shipbuilding company. As an engineer in the
Research and Development division, you are assigned to do some evaluations
about the suitable diameter, suitable material, material power transmission and
corresponding twist angle for the fabrication dan testing team references. Below
are the details of the problem.

One of two hollow drive shafts of the ship is 40 m long, and its outer and inner
diameters are 400 mm and 200 mm, respectively as shown in Figure 2.1. The
shaft is made from a material for which all = 60 MPa and G = 77.2 GPa. Knowing
that the maximum speed of rotation of the shaft is 160 rpm. You should give
information/data for the questions stated as below.
i. The maximum power that can be transmitted by one shaft to its propeller
(5 marks)
ii. The corresponding angle of twist of the shaft. What would happen if the twist
angle is greater than your twist angle?
(4 marks)
iii. If the power transmission of the shaft increases to 15 MW what is the suitable
inner diameter for the shaft if the outer diameter remains.
(4 marks)
iv. From your point of view, the inner diameter of the shaft should be increased
or decrease if the power of transmission of the shaft is increase. Please give
justification to support your answer.
(4 marks)
v. Can you suggest what is the suitable material for the drive shaft based on the
problem given? Give your justification on why you select the material.
(4 marks)
vi. Calculate the safety factor based on the material that you select.
