Detective Stories : Questionning

Introduction :
Hello everyone I hope you’re doing well, today we’re going to see how a detective
and a policeman solve a case, but first let’s introduce you to this case.
It’s in London last night, on the 21st of june that a murder happend. A poor guy named Steve
was found stabbed in his apartment. Thanks to police and the help they gave us to narrow
down the suspects to three people :
- Anne, his girlfriend, who is a doctor at the hospital
- John, his brother, who is lawyer
- and Matthew, who worked with Steve at the bank
Now it’s time to let the professionals finish their job !

Dialogue :

N : Finally here ! (passing time sound effect). Oh, the policeman seems to be a little
bit late, let’s call him.

A (on the phone) : Hello, i’m going to be five or ten minutes late because of the
traffic, I apologize.

N : Oh no worries, I'll wait.

A (on the phone) : Thank you, I come as quickly as possible.

(10 MINUTES LATER)

A : Hello, you must be Naïm, the detective (serrage de main)

N : Hello, and you must be..

A (cutting N) : Abdelwakil, the policeman you’re waiting for.

N : Perfect ! Let’s enter, the suspects must wait inside.

A : Yes

(OPENING DOOR SOUND)

(THE SUSPECTS ENTER THE INTERROGATING ROOM)
 A (to the suspects) : Hello I’m Abdelwakil the policeman

N : And I’m Naïm the detective

N : As you must know, Steve was found stabbed in his apartment on the 21st of June
and Abdelwakil and I are here to learn more about you and your activities on the 21st of
June.

Matthew (stressed and scared) : I wasn’t with Steve the whole day on the 21st, I
started working really early, it was 6am I think, and I left work very late at 11pm. And Steve
wasn’t working this day !!!

A : Calm down Matthew we haven’t started asking the questions yet

N (writing in his notebook) : Matthew gave us his answer, so thank you and let’s
move on to John for the same question.

A : What were you doing the night of the crime ?

John (calm and relaxed) : Actually I was very sick this day so I stayed home in my
bed reading books and watching TV.

N : Have you noticed anything weird or different with Steve this day.

John : Yes, Steve used to call me every day around 6pm to talk with me about his
day, but he didn’t call me on the 21st and I didn’t either because I was really sick as I told
you before.

A : Okay, thank you for your precise answer, what about you Anne ?

Anne (crying) : I had different appointments the whole day and at the time of the
crime I was in front of Steve’s door knocking but nobody answered me, I tried to call him on
the phone, he answered me and this is what I heard.

(on the phone : ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT ? while Steve is screaming)

N : Thank you for this very important piece of evidence Anne, and I’m sorry about
that, we are all sad for your boyfriend.

N : Now I have another question for you, when have you all seen or talked with Steve
the last time ?

Anne (crying) : I called him the morning before he died

John : I talked with him on a video call on the 19th of June

Matthew : I seen him the whole day on the 20th of June at work
 Anne : Wasn’t he on a professional trip that day, i’m pretty sure that he wasn’t at work
on the 20th

A : Thank you for all your answers, so no one had noticed anything different with him
?

N : Sorry to interrupt you Abdelwakil but there is something weird with your speech
Matthew. You say that you were with Steve at work on the 20th of June but like Anne said,
Steve was actually on a professional trip in South Korea since a week and you were at the
office, here in France, so you and Steve couldn’t be together the whole day on the 20th of
June, and he came back very late from his trip, precisely, he was at home at 2am.

A : Quick question for everyone, what were your links with Steve ?

Matthew : He was just my colleague, nothing more, we weren’t friends at all, and I
don’t really like him because we do the same work but he has always been paid more than
me.

Anne : My boyfriend was everything for me, I used to see him everyday, and when I
couldn’t see him, I used to call him.

John : Because of the distance, I wasn’t really familiar with my brother but I used to
call him sometimes.

N : Okay, and last question, is there any reason that you couldn’t like Steve ?

Anne : There isn’t any reason that could make me not like Steve, I love him he is
everything for me

John : No actually, I wasn’t talking with him that much so for the few times I called
him there wasn’t any problem with him.

A : It’s your turn to talk Matthew, are you with us ?

Matthew, Yes, yes I’m here, so like I already said, Steve was paid more than me for
the same work so I don’t really like him.

N : Okay thank you all but I think we have our culprit !

A : Yes I think so.

N : Abdelwakil, you can put this “Matthew” in jail now !

Matthew (louder) : Why ? I’m not Steve’s killer, there must be a mistake detective.

N : No, there isn’t any mistake and I’m sure about that. As soon as we started to talk,
me and my colleague Abdelwakil, you started defending yourself and we hadn’t asked
anything yet. And you pretend that you were with Steve on the 20th at work, and like I have
already said, Steve wasn’t there that day.

A : And don’t forgot that he don’t really like him for some paying reasons

N : Yes of course, so we can conclude that YOU are the murderer of this poor guy.
