MAIN AIR COMPRESSOR

INTRODUCTION

In this project I have based myself on explaining the operation, parts

and definition of a main compressor that is used on board a ship.
These types of projects are important to increase our knowledge of
main and auxiliary equipment used when we are on board in order to
know how to use and maintain this system.

I consider that my knowledge of this air compressor has increased as

it makes me do more research regarding this equipment which is so
necessary on board as without this equipment we would not be able
to launch the main engine.

And as a last point, I consider that my level of English has increased

with this project because I have discovered new words in technical
English and thanks to speaking I feel that I will function better when I
am on board.
DEFINITION

It is a machine in charge of sucking the air from the

environment and compressing it within the system
by means of a piston, in order to increase its
pressure for the use of different equipment present
in the ship. Likewise, it is mostly used in hydraulic
systems and is connected to an electric motor.
HOW IT WORKS?
First the electric motor is started making the
compressor start to give movement to intake valves and
suck air, the cylinder units compress and expand the air
taking it to the air bottles passing to water/oil separator.
After that the drain valves will filter and purge, getting
clean air. The air is forked, a line to the safe valve and
another line containing a pressure sensor connects to
another pressure regulator. The pressure sensor sends a
signal to a pressure gauge and you can see the high
pressure there. Finally this pressure is taken and sent to
the motor to start its work, breaking the inertia.
MAINTENANCE
On board there are different types maintenance,
this varies according to the manual, then the 3rd
engineer is in charge of do that, then he will act
maintenance when there is routine inspection or
system failure.

IMPORTANCE

The main air compressor system is very important to

be able to start the main engine as without it the
engine would not be able to start and be able to move
in addition to the air compressor will give operation
to more actions of the boat either for daily service
and other tires on-board equipment. Without
compressed air, the motor does not start, the
pneumatic system is used and batteries because the
machine is too big.
