Robert: Wait – I’ve got an idea. Let’s go when I finish
work. It’s not hot at 7.00 in the evening.
Anna: And I’m not sleeping. Great idea!

Tony: In picture A, a man is hiking in the mountains.
There aren’t any trees, so it isn’t shady. It’s a
sunny day, but it looks cold because there’s snow
on the mountains and the man is wearing warm
clothes. There aren’t any other people in the
picture. The man is alone, but he seems happy.
It’s very peaceful.
Susan: In picture B, people are shopping at a market. The
market is outdoors. There are a lot of people, and
it seems very crowded and lively. It looks like it’s a
warm sunny day because the people are wearing
summer clothes. It looks like the people are
enjoying themselves. It’s fun to watch all the
interesting people at the market.

Jared: Yeah, but on Saturday, I had to do all the
housework, too. I spent Saturday morning doing
the laundry. Then I made dinner and washed the
dishes.
Rachel: Wow, that is a lot of work.
Jared: At least on Sunday my brother and I had a good
time.
Rachel: Where did you go?
Jared: We went to the cinema.
Rachel: That sounds like fun.
Jared: It was – but next weekend, I just want to sleep!

Wendy: Hi, Tim.
Tim: Hi, Wendy. What’s that brochure?
Wendy: It’s for a prison … well, actually, it’s a hotel. I’m
going to stay there.
Tim: What? Why would you want to stay in a prison?
Wendy: Because it’s a cool experience!
Tim: Hmm. What are you going to do there?
Wendy: I’m going to learn all about criminals’ lives, sleep
on a bed on the floor and eat the terrible prison
food.
Tim: Sounds … interesting. Who are you going with?
Wendy: My dad and I are going together, just the two of
us.
Tim: How long are you going to stay there?
Wendy: Just one night. I don’t think I could stay longer
than that!
Tim: What are you going to pack?
Wendy: They don’t let you keep any of your things. I’m
just going to pack a sweater to wear under the
prison uniform. It’s going to be cold!
Tim: I’m amazed that you agreed to do this. You hate
the cold!
Wendy: True, but it’s only one night. Where are you going
for your holiday?
Tim: My family is taking a normal beach holiday on the
coast. I’m packing my swimsuit and my scuba
diving equipment.
Wendy: We’re also going to the beach at the end of the
summer. When are you going?
Tim: We’re going in the last week of August.
Wendy: Great! Maybe we’ll see each other there … and
I’ll tell you all about prison life.

Lisa: I’m so nervous about my English project, Nick.
Nick: Why, Lisa? What do you have to do?
Lisa: I have to describe my favourite character from a
book.
Nick: That doesn’t sound so difficult. Why are you
nervous?
Lisa: Because I don’t even know how to begin.
Nick: OK. I’ll ask you some questions. First of all, what’s
the character’s name?
Lisa: Her name is Katniss Everdeen, from The Hunger
Games.
Nick: What’s she like? Why is she so special?
Lisa: Well, she’s very brave. She takes her sister’s place
in the dangerous Hunger Games and she fights
the cruel President Snow.
Nick: What else can you tell me about her?
Lisa: She’s also kind. She takes care of another girl
named Rue, even though they’re rivals in the
games.
Nick: She sounds amazing! Uh … what does she look
like?
Lisa: The book describes her as thin but very strong.
She’s beautiful too, but her appearance isn’t what
helps her win the Hunger Games. She wins
because she’s clever and she’s good at fighting.
Nick: Cool! Now I want to read the book, too.
Lisa: Well, you’ll have to wait. I’m giving it to Tammy
next. But you can always watch the films instead.
Nick: Good idea! I think I will.

last summer?

Ryan: Well, my teacher called and told me about
a photography competition at the art museum.
So, I decided to enter one of my photographs.
Jane: And … ?
Ryan: I won! I was so surprised!
Jane: Wow! But why were you surprised? You’re very
talented.
Ryan: Well, there were a lot of participants.
Jane: Was there an event to announce the winner?
Ryan: Yes, there was a ceremony at the museum last
night.
Jane: Were you alone?
Ryan: No, I wasn’t. My parents were with me and my
brother came, too.
Jane: I’m sure they’re very proud of you!
Ryan: Yeah, I felt a bit embarrassed at all the attention,
but now I just feel great.
Jane: Can I see your photograph?
Ryan: Yes, it’ll be at the museum for the next month.

Zoe: Have you ever volunteered, Robbie?
Robbie: Yes, I have. I volunteered at a reptile sanctuary
once.
Zoe: A reptile sanctuary! I can’t believe anyone would
do that! Did you enjoy it?
Robbie: Yes, I did. It was amazing. How about you, Zoe?
Would you like to try it?
Zoe: No! That’s not my idea of fun!
Robbie: What’s wrong with volunteering?
Zoe: Nothing’s wrong with volunteering. I volunteered
last year at an old age home.
Robbie: That sounds interesting. Did you enjoy it?
Zoe: Oh, yes. I really enjoyed meeting the people there
and hearing their stories. But volunteering with
snakes? No, thanks. How crazy can people be?
Robbie: It’s not just snakes. There are also spiders,
crocodiles, alligators …
Zoe: Yuck! I can understand volunteering with cats,
dogs or horses – but snakes? No, thank you.
It’s too frightening. Why did you do it, Robbie?
Robbie: Because it’s something different. Cats, dogs and
horses are cute, so lots of people want to work
with them. But reptiles also need someone to
work with them.
Zoe: Mmm … Maybe you’re right. So, where did you
do it?
Robbie: At the reptile sanctuary in Rockworth.
Zoe: When were you there?
Robbie: Last summer. I volunteered for two months.
Zoe: Would you do it again?
Robbie: Oh, yes. In fact, they’ve even offered me a job.
I’m going to work there on Saturdays!
