Don’t ignore telecom: It’s at the heart

of post-pandemic life
Have you ever wondered how many of the 195 countries do not have mobile phones? I tried to search the answer but
could not get an authentic number. However, we certainly know that by the end of 2020, over 5.2 billion people – 67 % of
the global population – subscribed to mobile services. We also know that mobile technologies and services generated
USD4.4 trillion of economic value added globally during the CY 2020. The GSMA report, ‘The Mobile Economy 2021’,
estimates this economic impact to grow by USD480 billion and touch USD5 trillion by 2025, particularly with the
launch of 5G that is expected to drive improvements in productivity and efficiency.

India has also witnessed a massive uptake in the use of digital technologies since April 2020, after the pandemic
outbreak. Health and human services (HHS) organizations reported the highest adoptions of digital technologies,
according to a research report, ‘Embracing Digital: Is Covid-19 the catalyst for lasting change?’, based on a survey by
EY and Imperial College London’s Institute for Global Health Innovation in Australia, India, Italy, UAE, the UK, and US.

In this survey, 51% Indian respondents indicated an increase in the use of digital technologies and data solutions,
while 74% believed the adoption led to an increase in staff productivity. Nearly three-fourth of the Indian respondents
reported positive experiences with digitalization, leading to better collaboration and efficiency in the operating model.
Educational institutions, government and private organizations, ecommerce, entertainment and others too have gone
digital like never before.

We know that a major portion of broadband subscribers in India are wireless – 757.53 million – as compared to 22.74
wireline one, according to the TRAI’s May-end data. The top five service providers constituted 98.80% market share of
the total broadband subscribers: Reliance Jio Infocomm (434.23 million), Bharti Airtel (192.73 million), Vodafone Idea
(119.64 million), BSNL (22.47 million), and Atria Convergence (1.87 million). This clearly show the critical role that the
telecom service providers have to play in enabling Digital India and the government’s vision of making India a USD5
trillion economy by 2024-25.

Against this background, the recent crisis in the telecom sector triggered by the Supreme Court decision to disallow
any re-calculations on AGR dues of telcos to the government is not just a setback for Vodafone Idea, it can impact the
overall telecom sector growth and economy with a duopoly looming large. It will also impact the 5G rollout in India –
the silver bullet that is expected to steer the country’s dream of becoming a global economic powerhouse.

While a stitch in time could have saved a lot of uncertainty – for the government certainly knew what was coming and
how hard it will hit, it needs to act fast to help the company survive and ensure India does not falter at the first step of
the new-generation tech rollout.

What it takes to secure 5G network

M5G private networks have a larger potential attack surface because of IoT exposure,
physical mobility of devices and the interplay between enterprises, mobile operators,
manufacturers, IT/OT vendors and suppliers.

Operators will need to offer logical isolation mechanisms and physical radio layer
protections (jamming protection). To fulfil the requirements for a single trust domain,
additional end-to-end encryption and integrity protection mechanisms need to be
in place.

With 5G, enterprises and providers can be jointly responsible for security. End-to-end
security requires vendor collaboration, but enterprise customers have a role to play
too. They have work to do in ensuring their data is protected as they are in charge of
their own devices and the data generated by them, regardless of where it is stored.

Zero trust architecture alleviates both the risk of an external attacker getting into
the network and the risk of lateral movement in the event of a security breach. 5G

apply security policies, will be able to keep up with the speed of 5G networks.

5G has been deployed in over 60+ countries. When compared to 4G, the technology

With 5G, we can experience augmented and virtual reality at faster, uniform data

manufacturing, and transportation, healthcare, and asset performance. The Indian
market currently offers 4G (and 3G prior to that), which provides improvements in
data transfer speeds for smartphones; 5G will allow the entire range of products to
communicate. The number of devices that can be connected to the network with 5G
is increasing dramatically, reaching a trillion per square mile.
