2.3 Adding the Required Data for Nuclear Applications

Nuclear Applications requires certain data present in the project for it to work. This data is available in the
Master project supplied with PDMS, or can be recreated through the provided macros.

2.3.1 Including Data from Supplied Databases

Databases storing template, catalogue, and specification

information can be included from the Master project.

Two Catalogue databases and one Design database are provided.

The project administrator should include the following databases in

the relevant Nuclear MDB:
 MASTER/NUCLEARCATA
 MASTER/NUCLEARSPEC
 MASTER/NUCLEARTMPL

2.3.2 Re-creating Data from Supplied Macros

As an alternative to including databases from the MASTER project the data contained in those databases
can be re-created from supplied macros. Macro files are typically located at:

C:\AVEVA\Plant\PDMS12.1.SP2\asso_products\na\dflts.

Catalogue and specification data should be created in a suitable database using the Paragon module. It is
important to create the catalogue data before the specification data.

The data contained in the MASTER/NUCLEARCATA database can be obtained from the macro
NUCLEAR_CATALOGUE.

The data contained in the MASTER/NUCLEARSPEC database can be obtained from the macro
NUCLEAR_SPECS.

Template data must be created in a suitable Design database. The data contained in
the MASTER/NUCLEARTMPL database can be obtained from the macro NUCLEAR_TEMPLATES.

2.4 Testing the Installation

Log into PDMS and enter the DESIGN module. Find the Nuclear
Application toolbar. Either click the Nuclear Concrete Design
(NCD) icon or enter from Design > Nuclear. If NCD loads, then
it has been successfully installed.

CHAPTER 4

3 Parameter Files

Parameter files contain information that Nuclear Applications uses while in operation. Parameter files are
read when the application is loaded and they are stored in global variables. To re-read the files the
application needs to be re-started.

Nuclear Applications is supplied with a number of example parameter files for both Metric and Imperial
projects. In addition, a set of parameter files reflecting the KKS naming system are also supplied.

Parameter files need to be placed in a separate project defaults folder and are used exclusively for Nuclear
Applications, e.g. SAMDFLTS. The files are contained within three sub-folders, one for each product:

 concrete_design
 concrete_quantities
 room_manager

 Due to changes relating to units in AVEVA PDMS 12.1, it is essential that imperial parameter files are
copied into the project directory if Nuclear Applications is to be used. The imperial parameter files are
typically located in C:\AVEVA\Plant\PDMS12.1.SP2\asso_products\na\dflts\concrete_design\IMP.
Each product has minimum requirements for the parameter files used. These requirements along with a
description of significant parameter files are described in the sections that follow.

3.1 Nuclear Concrete Design Parameter Files

A number of parameter files are available for use in Nuclear Concrete Design (NCD) and as such a
comprehensive listing of files is provided with the standard product. Not all files are required in order for
NCD to run, although some warning messages may be generated if certain files are omitted.Historically,
some of the included files were used in upgrade process from other non-PDMS design tools.

The AUTRES, UPDATEREF, TORSEUR, and TMRF parameter files are not required to run NCD, but may
be useful for some clients operating previous versions of PDMS.

Due to changes in unit capability, four additional parameter files are provided for use with imperial projects.
These additional files control the format of imperial units displayed in forms used by NCD:
 ELEVATION
 DENSITY
 AREAS
 VOLUMES
The sections that follow highlight some of the more commonly used files in the NCD utility.
 If a line in a parameter file starts with a # then this is a comment statement. These lines will provide
extra details about the file.

3.2 Nuclear Room Manager Parameter Files

The only file required to make Nuclear Room Manager (NRM) work correctly is the CLASSIFICATION file.
However if users have existing Nuclear Room Manager data from earlier versions of Nuclear Applications
(Pre 12.0 SP5), the ZONES, INVENTORY, FACES and ROOMS files should be retained.

3.2.1 CLASSIFICATION file

The classification definition file defines the content of the secondary attributes window, which serves to enter
the radio-protection classification. Significant lines start with the # character.

 Although retained in the parameter file the UDA names for Shut Down values and Production values
are no longer used.

3.4 Investigating Parameter Files – Worked Example

Find the parameters files supplied with the product.

Navigate to the %SAMDFLTS% folder. If the

parameter files are not present, copy them into this
folder.

To find the folder location, type q evar ‘SAMDFLTS’

onto the command line.

 If the path doesn’t exist then it needs to be

added to the evars.bat file to define it.

Find the NOMMER file and open the file in a suitable text editor. As noted previously, this file controls the
default naming that is used to populate the forms in Nuclear Applications.

The first column of data identifies the PDMS element

type (e.g. Zone, Structure, Framework). The second
column of data holds the Design Purpose of the
Element (e.g. Wall, Slab, etc).

The name that will be applied to the element type is

defined from the third column of data onwards.

Nuclear Application Administration TM-1307

The following format is used for the naming:

 The character ‘#’ will be replaced by a letter between A and Z.
 The character ‘%’ will be replaced by an integer between 0 and 9.
 The character ‘!’ will be replaced by the STEXT attribute for a TEXT element, or the empty string for
another type of element.
 Characters ‘*’ will be replaced by the characters of the owner element’s name.
 {XXX} indicates a character chosen among the proposed characters.

Update the NOMMER file to change the default

naming of an element.

As an example, change first line to :

SITE CIV /B%%

This change will shorten the default name of

buildings to /B followed by a unique number. This will
ultimately make all file names shorter.

Restart PDMS and create a building to observe the

new name.

 Parameter files are read when the application is loaded and stored in global variables. To re-read the
files the application will need to be re-started.

CHAPTER 4

4 Catalogues and Specifications

When creating catalogues and specifications for Nuclear Applications, several conditions or rules must be
followed. These conditions are described here and should be considered when configuring Nuclear
Applications.
 This content assumes a familiarity with Paragon and/or attendance of a suitable Catalogues and
Specifications training course.

4.1 Plines

Additional Plines are required on profiles. These Plines are used for positions of components and are used
to specify the sense.

The followings considerations should be made:

 CCON attribute set to FACE or FACD – depending on the sense.
 PURP attribute should be the DKEY of the DATA element that represents the dimension in the
direction of the pline.
 The LEVEL of these plines should be 10 to 11.
 PKEY should begin with an F.

4.2 Geometry

Geometry that is to be included for anchor spacing checks should exist at levels 0 to 20 for anchor spacing
checks.

4.3 Sub-components:

To allow the same sub-component across Nuclear Applications, consideration must be given the types of
elements that could own the sub-components. The element types are:
1. Catalogued component – thickness given by first owning design parameter.
2. Floor component – thickness given by LOHE.
3. General wall component – thickness given by user.
To ensure the correct rotation of the subcomponent, use 3 PTPOS for each SFIT element. Use P100, P101,
and P102 for 3 axes and ensure all geometry positioned relative to these points:

e.g. Ptcpos Z (ATTRIB RPRO DEPL) X (ATTRIB E)Y (ATTRIB N) WRT OWNER OF OWNER.

4.4 Specification Components

There is a potential requirement for 5 SPCO elements to point to the same SFIT elements. This is so the
component will be available for different owner types:
1. Catalogued walls.
2. General Walls.
3. Floors.
4. Gratings.
5. Beams and Columns.
 Gratings are only available in steel (not concrete), hence considered a separate element to Floors.

4.5 Anchor Spacing Checks

For the SFIT elements representing anchor plates, consideration needs to be made for their use with anchor
spacing checks.
 A NSEX is required to represent edge spacing. The Level should be 18 to 19 with Obstruction set
to 0.
 A NSEX is required to represent the anchor spacing. The Level should be 16 to 17 with
Obstruction set to 0.
 Additional DATA elements are required to describe minimum, optimum and calculated distances for
edge spacing and anchor spacing.

4.6 Investigating Paragon – Worked Example

Log into the Paragon module of PDMS. Select
Paragon > Steelwork… from the main menu.

The supplied databases hold the example data that is

required to work with Nuclear Applications. The
Catalogue Explorer displays the available catalogue and
specifications.

Navigate to MASTER/NUCLEARCATA. Browse below

the CATA element to explore the elements provided.

The data is organised into sections (STSE elements) and

categories (STCA elements).

For this example select:

/CATA_NUCLEAR_2x2_ANCHORPLATE.

With the chosen STCA element as the current element,

select Modify > Category… from the main menu.

This will display a form that can be used to review, create and modify the contents of the category.

Use the form to investigate the category.

 What Ppoints have been created?
 What levels are the NSEX elements at?
 What DATA elements are included?
In addition, find a profile category and investigate the plines that exist.
