Abortion
The most recent study on national abortion incidence in the Philippines used indirect estimation
techniques and hospital records to estimate a rate of 27 abortions per 1,000 women of
reproductive age in 2000, with lower and upper estimates of 22 and 31 abortions per 1,000
women.
This exploratory study of induced abortion in the Philippines was carried out among 286 women who
had undergone induced abortion and 106 abortion practitioners, selected from four major divisions of
the country. The study investigated the sociodemographic characteristics and pregnancy histories of
abortion clients; the sociodemographic characteristics, medical status, and practice background of
practitioners; abortion procedures and the related details; availability and provision of services;
reasons for undergoing abortion; sequelae of and attitudes toward abortion; and the family planning
background of clients and practitioners.
 Describe why you chose the topic you researched. Is this a topic you are conflicted on yourself?

I chose this topic because, Philippines remains to have one of the most restrictive abortion laws in
the world.
 Describe how the issue you researched could become an issue in a health care facility. What are
the possible conflicts that could arise?

Many factors influence or necessitate a woman’s decision to have an abortion. They include, but
are not limited to, contraceptive failure, barriers to contraceptive use and access, rape, incest,
intimate partner violence, fetal anomalies, illness during pregnancy, and exposure to teratogenic
medications.

Pregnancy complications, including placental abruption, bleeding from placenta previa,

preeclampsia or eclampsia, and cardiac or renal conditions, may be so severe that abortion is the
only measure to preserve a woman’s health or save her life.

 Provide a brief summary of the supporting and opposing arguments for this issue.
An abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. It is a basic healthcare need for
millions of women, girls and others who can become pregnant.

Roman Catholic Church's arguments against abortion rights suggests that its opposition is
grounded more in outmoded views regarding women's roles than in concern for protecting fetal
life. The 1st argument raised by Catholics and other anti-abortion forces is that abortion
represents the unjustifiable destruction of a human life. A 2nd argument focuses on the status of
the fetus as a person from the moment of conception, making abortion murder. A 3rd equates the
fetus's potential for personhood with the pregnant woman's actual personhood.

 Using what you’ve learned about value development and world views in this chapter, why do
you think you have developed your own supporting, opposing, or undecided opinion of this
issue?

Abortion has always been a sensitive topic for bystanders, and politicians. The reason why
abortion is such a sensitive topic is the decision of whether or not the baby inside the womb is
alive or not. With abortion, doctors would end a woman’s pregnancy, by removing the fetus, but
by doing so the baby will die.
