AUTOFLIGHT-FLIGHT AUGMENTATION
This part of the course deals with the flight augmentation. Here is the outline:
 Introduction
 Speed scale management
 Low energy warning
 ALPHA floor protection
 Reactive windshear detection
3
INTRODUCTION
The flight augmentation system, which comprises two Flight Augmentation Computers,
performs two main functions. The yaw function and flight envelope protection. The yaw
function is discussed in Flight Controls lesson. Here, we concentrate on the flight envelope
protection.
4
The flight envelope protection provides: speed scale management, low energy warning,
Alpha-floor protection and reactive windshear detection. These functions are provided
regardless of the position of the Flight Augmentation Computer pushbutton.
5
SPEED SCALE MANAGEMENT
The Flight Augmentation Computer computes various characteristic speed and controls
the speed scale on the primary flight display. The speed limits are sent to the Flight
Management and Guidance Computers. The Flight Augmentation Computer also
computes the speed trend and displays it as an arrow on the speed scale.
6
LOW ENERGY WARNING
Excessive nose-up attitudes, caused by upsets or inappropriate maneuvers, may lead to
a very rapid energy loss and reduction in speed. As you recall, the Normal Law High
Angle-of-attack protection provides an aerodynamic protection against these situations.
In addition to this aerodynamic protection, there are some energy features.
7
For instance, if Autothrust is in the SPEED mode, the speed cannot drop below VLS, even
if the target speed is below VLS.

Other energy protection is the LOW ENERGY warning. If, for any reason, the airspeed
drops below the minimum selectable speed, VSL, aural warning “SPEED SPEED SPEED” is
automatically triggered by the Flight Augmentation Computer and repeated every 5
seconds. The warning is intended to draw the pilot's attention to the SPEED scale, so as to
manually increase thrust to recover a positive flight path angle through pitch control.
9
The Flight Augmentation Computer computes the energy level based on aircraft
configuration, horizontal deceleration rate and flight path angle, and triggers the
warning when energy of the aircraft is below a threshold.
10
The low energy warning is available during deceleration, between 100 feet and 2000 feet
radio altitude, in Configuration 2, 3, and FULL and triggered just before ALPHA floor
detection. Note, the warning is inhibited in alternate or direct law, or if both radio
altimeters fail.
11
ALPHA FLOOR PROTECTION
If the angle-of-attack increases to ALPHA floor threshold and airspeed continues to drop,
The Flight Augmentation Computer automatically triggers ALPHA floor protection.
12
Here is a test for your memory. What do you expect to happen when alpha-floor
protection is activated?
13
When ALPHA floor protection is triggered, the Autothrust automatically engages with
TOGA thrust regardless of thrust levers position. “ALPHA FLOOR” is displayed as
AUTOTHRUST mode on the FMA.
14
The ALPHA floor protection is lost when a combination of failures occurs. This protection
is also not available in case of an engine-out, when slats/flaps are extended, and in
alternate or direct law.
15
REACTIVE WINDSHEAR DETECTION
Another protection which is provided based on the energy level is the windshear
detection. During takeoff and approach, the FACs generate the windshear warning
whenever the aircraft’s energy level falls below a predetermined threshold.
16
The warning is available from 3 seconds after lift-off up to 1300 feet radio altitude at
takeoff, from 1 300 feet radio altitude down to 50 feet radio altitude during landing, and
with at least CONFIGURATION 1 selected.

When the aircraft encounters windshear conditions, a red WINDSHEAR message is

displayed for a minimum of 15 seconds on both primary flight displays and an aural
warning “WINDSHEAR, WINDSHEAR, WINDHEAR” sounds.
18
In windshear conditions, set the thrust levers to TOGA immediately and follow the pitch
order to fly the SRS.
19
End of course.
