José Rizal (1861-1896) is one of the most revered figures in Philippine history. He was a multifaceted
intellectual and a political activist, best known for his political writings that inspired the Philippine
revolution and ultimately led to his execution by the Spanish colonizers. Rizal was also a physician who
trained in ophthalmology under 2 prominent European ophthalmologists, Louis de Wecker and Otto
Becker.
The cinematic depiction of Rizal's literary works won two film industry awards more than a century after
his birth. At the 10th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards ceremony, Rizal was
honored in the Best Story category for Gerardo de León's adaptation of his book Noli Me Tángere. The
recognition was repeated the following year with his movie version of El Filibusterismo, making him the
only person to win back-to-back FAMAS Awards.

Her lyrical poetry in Spanish, and especially that in Ilocano, gained attention in various international
forums in Spain, Paris, and St. Louis, Missouri. Her literary contributions - particularly 22 preserved
poems - were recognized when she was included in the Encyclopedia Internationale des Oeuvres des
Femmes (International Encyclopedia of Women’s Works) in 1889. She is believed to be the first Filipina
to receive this international recognition, a homage that occurred after her death at a young age. [1] Her
work was exhibited at the Exposition Filipina in Madrid in 1887 and the Exposition Internationale in
Paris
also known as Don Belong (July 7, 1864 – October 10, 1938), was a prominent Filipino politician,
writer, and labor activist in the 19th and 20th centuries. He was the original founder of the Iglesia
Filipina Independiente, an independent Philippine national church. He is now known as the "Father of
Philippine Folklore", the "Father of the Philippine Labor Movement", and the "Father of Filipino
Socialism"
de Los Reyes published in rapid succession multiple works: Ilocandias (1887), Articulos Varios
(1887), Las Islas Visayas en la Epoca de la Conquista (1889), Historia de Filipinas (1889), and the
two-volume Historia de Ilocos (1890). These and other works won him a measure of recognition as a
scholar.
4. Carlos Bulosan
Carlos Sampayan Bulosan was an English-language Filipino novelist and poet who immigrated to
America on July 1, 1930. Bulosan's works include poetry collections, Letter from America (1942),
Chorus from America (1942), and The Voice of Bataan (1943), as well as the novels The Cry and the
Dedication (written in the 1950s and published posthumously in 1995) and The Sound of Falling Light
(1960).
5. F Sionil Jose
Francisco Sionil José (December 3, 1924 – January 6, 2022) was a Filipino writer who was one of the
most widely read in the English language. A National Artist of the Philippines for Literature, which was
bestowed upon him in 2001, José's novels and short stories depict the social underpinnings of class
struggles and colonialism in Filipino society. His works—written in English—have been translated into
28 languages, including Korean, Indonesian, Czech, Russian, Latvian, Ukrainian, and Dutch.
6. Juan Crisostomo Soto
Si Juan Crisostomo "Crissot" Caballa Soto ay isinilang sa Santa Ines, Bacolor, Pampanga noong 27
Enero 1867. Tinagurian siyang Ama ng Panitikang Capampangan. Pambihira ang kanyang kahusayan
sa pagtatalong patula sa wikang Capampangan kung kaya ang pagtatalong patula sa wikang
Capampangan ay tinawag na Crissotan na katumbas ng Balagtasan sa wikang Tagalog. Isa siyang
manunulat-makata, mandudula at editor sa wikang Kapampangan
His best-known works are the zarzuela Alang Dios!; the novel Lidia; the play Delia; the short story
Y' Miss Phathupats; and the poem Malaya. Soto edited three newspapers, El Pueblo, El Imparcial,
and Ing Alipatpat.
- Edith Cutaran Lopez-Tiempo (April 22, 1919 – August 21, 2011), was a Filipino poet, fiction writer,
teacher and literary critic in the English language. She was conferred the National Artist Award for
Literature in 1999.

- Florentino H. Hornedo. (16 October 1938 – 09 December 2015). A native of Batanes, Flor
Hornedo (as he was fondly called) was an esteemed professor of literature, history, philosophy,
and cultural studies at Ateneo de Manila University.
He was a prolific writer, researcher and author of journal articles, monographs and books such
as “Laji: An Ivatan Folk Lyric Tradition” (1979), “Pagmamahal and Pagmumura Essays” (1997),
“Culture and Community in the Philippine Fiesta and Other Celebrations” (2000), “Taming the
Wind: Ethno-Cultural History on the Ivatan of the Batanes Isles” (2000), “The Glitter of Gold in

Néstor Vicente Madali González was a Filipino novelist, short story writer, essayist and, poet. Conferred as
the National Artist of the Philippines for Literature in 1997.

Potenciano Gregorio, often referred to as Potenciano Gregorio Sr. (May 19, 1880 - February 12, 1939) was
a Bicolano musician. He was the composer of "Sarung Banggi" (One Evening), the most famous song in
the Bikol language.
Andres Bonifacio
Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro was a Filipino Freemason and revolutionary leader. He is often called "The
Father of the Philippine Revolution” and considered one of the national heroes of the Philippines.
Two works of Bonifacio were published in the Kalayaan– “Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa” and “Ang Dapat
Mabatid ng mga Tagalog.”
