Picture this: you’re in your new hostel room at one of the most reputed law universities in the

country and you’re fast asleep. The rays of sunshine are beaming on your face and you suddenly bolt
up awake, realizing that you’ve slept through three different alarms. You panickily check your phone
only to realize that you woke up before the alarms rang.

While making your way to the hostel bathrooms, you look around and see your new batchmates and
soon, friends. You sleepily wave at them. Over the next five years, they will be beside you, as you go
through the all-nighters, library sessions, moot court sessions, complicated lectures that make you
pull out your hair in agony and irresponsibly fun parties that define the life of a law student. You go
through your morning routine and freshen up for your first day of university, the culmination of 2
years of preparing for and then acing your entrance exams.

Alright, that’s enough picturing. I’ll fill in the rest of the details.

After grabbing my breakfast at the hostel mess, I made my way to the lecture hall and sat in an
available seat about 30 minutes before class started, because if there’s one thing my father strongly
advised about university life, it was that I had to ensure I didn’t become one of “the backbenchers”.
As my fellow batchmates entered the hall, one could sense the ever-growing amalgamation of
excitement and nervousness in the air as we entered not just some lecture hall, but a new phase of
our lives.

After 6 hours of getting introduced to your courses and your highly capable professors, and the
compulsory library orientation after lunch, I made my way back to my hostel room, filled with
excitement about the journey that I had embarked on and of course, my assignments for the day. I
then made my way to the canteen to grab a snack and had a chat with my batchmates. We
exchanged jokes, our personal experiences about the first day of university and the occasional
remark about the lectures that we had attended a few hours before.

I then made my way to the library and started my assignments, in which I was introduced to a new,
far more complicated level of linguistics and concepts than what I had faced in school. After making
some progress, I made my way to the mess for dinner, where my batchmates and I shared even
more jokes and experiences while eating what was considered as “food” that was on our plates.

I made my way back to my room, finished my assignments and took a small walk around the campus.
I took a look around and came to the realization that this building is what I would be calling home for
the next 5 years as I study to fulfil my dream of becoming a lawyer.
