POWER ELECTRONICS-2 MARKS

1.
Enumerate the reason for the rectifier built with SCR.

SCRs are mainly used in electronic devices that require control of

high voltage and power. This makes them applicable in medium and
high AC power operations such as motor control functions.

2.
Examine why the power factor of semi converters is
better than full converters?

For the same voltage output(vo), the power factor of a single phase
semi converter is better than a full converter because of the
freewheeling action of the diode and thyristor in symmetrical
connection and the freewheeling action of the two diodes in
asymmetrical connection.

3.
Illustrate how a phase control is employed in a full wave
rectifier connected with R Load?

The single phase full-wave rectifier does this by using four diodes
arranged in a bridge arrangement passing the positive half of the
waveform as before but inverting the negative half of the sine wave to
create a pulsating DC output.
Derive the anode current expression for the
4. Two-transistor model of Thyristor?

5.
A resistive load of 20 ohm is connected through a half
wave SCR circuit to 230V, 50Hz, single phase source.
Calculate the average DC output voltage?
6.
Infer the function of freewheeling diodes in a controlled
rectifier with RL load.

(i) Input Factor is Improved.

(ii) Load Current Waveform is improved.

(iii) FreeWheeling Diode Prevents becoming the Load Negative.

7.

rectifiers with an example.

Three Phase Controller had a Wide Range of Applications:

(i) Motor Drivers

(ii) Traction Equipment

(iii) Control Power Supplies

(iv) UPS Systems

(v) AC voltage Regulators

(vi) Cycloconverters
8.
Identify the effect of Source impedance in a rectifier
circuit.

The source impedance is taken as purely inductive. It causes the

outgoing and incoming SCRs to conduct together. During the
commutation period, the output voltage is equal to the average value
of the conducting phase voltages.

9.
Examine the impact of overlap angle on the performance
of the converter circuit?

The Commutation Period when the outgoing and incoming thyristors

are conducting is known as overlapping period. The Angular period
when both devices share conduction is known as commutation angle
or overlap angle.

10.
List out different Turn-on methods of a Thyristors?

SCR Turn ON methods:

(i) Forward Voltage Triggering

(ii) Temperature Triggering

(iii) Light Triggering

(iv) Gate Triggering.

11.
Compare the power factor of semi converter and full
converters and analyze which converter is preferable for
resistive load.

Ans: For Supply Given to the Load the Semi Converter receives Less
Reactive Power due to Free Wheeling When Compared to Full
Converter .Therefore Power Factor is Better in Full Converters.

A Resistive Loads Consists of Variable DC Voltage so Full Converter

is used.

12.
Explain the V-I Characteristics of SCR with a neat
diagram.
It is the curve between anode-cathode voltage (V) and anode
current (I) of an SCR at constant gate current.

Terms in V-I Characteristics of SCR:

1. Breakover voltage
2. Peak reverse voltage
3. Holding current
4. Forward current rating
5. Circuit fusing rating
13.
Distinguish latching current and holding current of
SCR?

Sn. Latching Current Holding Current

No.

1) It is related to the turn on It is related to the turn off

process of SCR or thyristor. process.

2) Minimum current above which Minimum value of anode

gate loses its control. current below which it must
fall to stop conducting in
forward direction.

3) Value of latching current is more It is less than latching current.

than that of holding current.

14.
The applied input a.c. power to a half-wave rectifier is
100 watts. The d.c. output power obtained is 40 watts.
(i) What is the rectification efficiency?

(ii) What happens to the remaining 60 watts?

(i)

(ii) 40% efficiency of rectification does not mean that

60% of power is lost in the rectifier circuit.

15.
A three phase semi converter feeds power to a resistive
load of 10Ω. For a firing angle delay of 300 the load takes
5 Kw. Find the magnitude of per phase input supply
voltage.
16.
Identify the factors that influence the turn-off time of a
thyristor?

When Thyristor anode current is above latching current, the gate loses
control over it. For turning off the SCR anode current must fall below
the holding current.
17.
Selecting the types of filter circuits is applicable for phase
controlled rectifiers?

Rectifiers are used for creating the smooth DC output voltage, for
this purpose there are usually filters used in rectifiers. This systems
can be divided as(i) inductor-input DC filters and (ii) capacity-input
DC filters.

18.
Analyze the impact of source impedance on the
performance of converters?

Source inductance has a significant impact on the converter

performance because its presence alters the output voltage of
the converter. As a result, the output voltage reduces as the load
current reduces.

19.
Compare converter grade and inverter grade
thyristor.

The difference between a converter-grade and an inverter-grade

thyristor is the low turn-off time (on the order of a few
microseconds) for the latter. The converter-grade thyristors are
slow type and are used in natural commutation (or
phase-controlled) applications.

20.
Summarize the advantages of single phase bridge
converter over mid-point converter?

(i) High Output Voltage for given input Voltage.

(ii) Low Amplitude Ripples. Smooth Output Voltage.
(iii) High Frequency Ripples Simplifying Filtering.
(iv) High Overall Efficiency.

21.
Silicon control rectifier is a current controlled device.
Why?

SCR is a Current Controlled device because no gate signal is applied

,a SCR Blocks current in both directions of an AC Waveform such as
lamp dimming ,Regulators, Motor Control.
