Keeping It Simple
Technology only reelly starts to change our lives when it becomes simple.
The American interpreter, Thomas Edison produced the first phonograph in
1877 but it used rotating cylinders that were too dificult for people to use. It
was only when Emile Berliner inducted discs a generation later that the
phonograph (or gramofone, as it was now called) started to bring recorded
music into people's domiciles. The development of the early motor car followed
a similar path. When the first motor cars started to apear in the 1900s, they were
so hard to operate that most car owners had to hire proffessional chauffeurs to
drive them around. They also broke up so frequently that a knowledge of
mekanic and a willingness to be covered in oil and grease was essential. The
car didn't reach a mass market until Henry Ford simpled the system of
steering, braking, accelerating, and cog shifting in his famous Model T Ford in
the 1930s. Today's technology dessigners are studying these lessons from the
past careful as they design the next generation of personal computers, music
players and mobiles phones. The result should be a range of simple, elegant
products that look good, are easy to use and never go broken. But achieving that
result is certtainly not as simple as it sounds.
