Hydraulic Constructions 2 & River Engineering

Leonardo Costa, PhD, leonardo.costa@unipd.it

Assignment 1 – by Monday, September the 5th, 2022 (expired)

Write a brief report (max 1 page) indicating the sources (usually the national or regional
environmental agencies) of hydrologic data in Cameroon:
- Rain-gauges positions
- Rainfall depths collected by the rain-gauges

Assignment 2 – by Monday, September the 12th, 2022

Part 1/2 (Part 2/2 → next page)
Complete the exercise 1 started during the Lecture 7 (available online from Tuesday,
September the 6th, 2022).
The exercise was related to the uniform flow in a channel characterized by different
roughness values (Ks) along the section of the riverbed.
Useful information for the solution of the application are the following:
• The section is rectangular, having width b = 20 m
• The longitudinal slope i is equal to 0.001.
• The Gauckler-Strickler coefficients for the bottom of the riverbed and for the side
walls are 35 m1/3/s and 65 m1/3/s respectively
1) Compute the equivalent roughness coefficient (K s,eq) for the water levels reported in the
following table
2) Compute the rate curve Q(y) using the Gauckler Strickler formula.
3) Find the depth y* corresponding to a flow-rate of 150 m 3/s.

Part 2/2
Complete the exercise 4 started during the Lecture 8 (available online from Wednesday,
September the 7th, 2022).
The exercise was related to the computation of the water profile developed in a small
channel starting from the boundary condition of critical flow. The channel ends with a
hydraulic jump in a larger basin. The calculation of the permanent flow profile can be made
by means of the finite differences method.
Useful information for the solution of the application are the following:
• The flow-rate is Q = 2.50 m3/s
• the section is trapezoidal, having the bottom width b 0 = 1.80 m and the lateral
slopes n = 1.5
• The longitudinal slope i is equal to 0.0005.
• The Gauckler-Strickler coefficient (equal for the entire section of the riverbed) is 40
m1/3/s

Using the finite differences scheme compute the water profile starting from the boundary
condition (critical depth at the end of the channel) to the water depth corresponding to the
uniform flow condition.
