Define your short-term post-MBA career goals.

How are your professional

strengths, past experience, and personal attributes aligned with these goals? (300

My short-term post-MBA goal is to become a management consultant focusing on

sales and marketing business function at a top-tier management consulting firm.
Doing so will help me prepare for my long-term career goal which is to head an
international business for a consumer products firm. Consulting will help me build a
network with some of the best minds in the world.

I have developed strategic thinking and managerial skills during my time at

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. and RP-SG FMCG. My stint at HCCBPL
helped me learn the fundamentals of the consumer products business and it also gave
me an opportunity to execute the company’s annual business plans. I was involved in
the planning and implementation of business plan in my area to achieve the desired
business results. My approach to problem solving has been analytical and creative. My
experience with Coca-Cola helped me in my role at RP-SG FMCG where I was
responsible to launch and grow a new-entrant challenger brand in a highly
competitive market. With detailed go-to-market planning, testing and execution, I
was successful in scaling up the business.

These roles involved identifying problems, developing plans, executing them and
measuring results. I consider this experience similar to that of an internal consultant
and I wish to continue to do the same at a global level across industries. I believe that
my analytical and creative thinking skills along with my people skills make me better
suited to a consultant role.

The Emory MBA program will help me realize my short-term and long-term goals by
giving me an opportunity to learn from and interact with fellow classmates who come
from all over the globe. I look forward to the IMPACT experience to solve issues of
strategic importance for real-world companies.

When I joined RP-SG FMCG as an Area Sales Head, I was faced with a challenge to
establish and grow a challenger brand in a market dominated by legacy brands. I was
leading a team of 4 sales executives who were in turn managing a team of 20 sellers.
The challenge for us was to triple our volume in 6 months by expanding I had to start
from scratch. While I had access to Nielsen data, I delegated the task of getting
ground-level competition information to my sales executives. I started understanding
the geography by visiting markets and also interviewed current distributors about
their experiences with the category.

With the available data and insights, we benchmarked our presence against
competition. This helped us identify the gaps in our distribution and we drafted a plan
to recruit more sellers and channel partners to reach our goals. The plan did face
resistance from my reporting manager, saying it was conservative, but I convinced
him to trust my understanding and judgement. Going ahead with the plan, we
recruited 30 additional sellers into our team and made journey plans for each of them.
I also appointed additional distributors to service the unserved markets. As a result of
this exercise, we were able to increase our sales by 2.8 times while expanding our
reach by 5x in 6 months. These efforts lead us to achieve a market share of 6% in the
Western Snacks category.

The most important learning for me from this experience was the power of
collaboration. I could have easily used the data available with me and crafted a plan for
my team to execute, but I got them involved in the process. This made them own the
plan and execute it with the same level of ownership.
