50 FIRST DATES
INTRODUCTION

The movie “50 First Dates” is a 2004 classic romantic comedy film directed by Peter
Segal, starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. The story revolves around Henry
(Adam Sandler) a “casanova” who became smitten to Lucy (Drew Barrymore) who by a
stroke of luck has “anterograde amnesia” which makes her forget recent events that she
had experienced. As their love bloom and they start feeling belongingness to one
another, henry settled on a plan to make Lucy fall in love with him every day. 50 first
dates gives us a light-hearted and humorous take on a romantic setting where a
whirlwind of circumstances take place.

BODY

Considering it was a classic film to watch for the genre of romantic comedy I can still
vaguely remember watching this from the past and feeling a lot of stomach aches from
laughing too much. It was definitely a light-hearted film, though I am not sure if it’s for
children since watching it again now that I am older, I realized it has subtle drug
references and sexual innuendos throughout the entirety of the film. I wouldn’t say the
film was life-changing; it is more so leaning on eye-opening, in a sense that it really
does take courage to commit and follow your heart’s desire, just like how Henry did.
Their deep affection for one another encompasses the resolve to love each other
through thick and… forgetfulness (lol). I think this film helped me believe in the concept
of loving someone unconditionally, even if they’re not okay, regarding even the worst of
circumstances. It taught me that maybe love like that exists, the one that transcends
hardships, sickness, and frustrations just to be with the person you love the most. 50
First Dates also instilled in me that a person with a great sense of humor can be a major
turn-on for someone; it forges a connection with optimism and positivity. The film serves
a purpose on its quirky and highly humorous content until the last second. It gave us an
uplifting story of two people who dismissed amnesia to be together. The movie gave us
a warm and fuzzy feeling in our belly whenever we watch romantic comedies, and that
is how I know that this film was successful. It delivered on every corner with the quick-
witted jokes to the emotionally-driven scenes of both of the actors. Lastly, can we talk
about the chemistry between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler? The energy of those
two easily overwhelms the whole film. They make you feel submerged to their world;
they make you experience the scenes beautifully. Right at this moment I am still not
convinced they aren’t truly in love (just kidding though…unless?).
