The story begins with college student Jeffrey Beaumont finding a severed ear in a field and

bringing it to detective John Williams. Despite being asked to not look into the case, Jeffrey
and the detectives daughter, Sandy, attempt to get to the bottom of the ear mystery. They
discover the crime is related to a singer named Dorothy, whose son was kidnapped by a
group of mentally unstable men.

The film stars Kyle Maclachlan as Jeffery, Laura Dern as Sandy, and Isabella Rosselini as
Dorothy. Maclachlan's performance is solid, creating a sincere and convincing portrayal of
his character's emotional turmoil (crying). Laura Dern, although having a less prominent
character, gives an up to par performance, with her anxiety being key to the tension in the
story. She delivers a touching monologue as well. But I believe they were both outshined by
Isabella Rosselini, who gives a stellar performance throughout, captivating the audience
through her heart wrenching despair. Her delivery is piercing, every line reaching the
audience like a sharp point. Dennis Hopper also shows actoral prowess through his
disturbing portrayal of Frank, a psychopathic man. He has great facial expressions and he
makes his dialogue funny and sad (you are so fucking suave).

The cinematography has some eye catching moments, such as this camera motion in the
first scene. The costume design is appealing, specially in Ben, a minor chharavter in the film.
We see a lot of close ups which help to show the emotional state of the characters. Music is
used to create tension effectively, as in this scene.

One of Blue Velvets strongest points is its provocative portrayal of sexuality, dealing with the
deep, dark desires of the human mind. This can be seen in the Baby wanna fuck scene,
which shows how truly depraved and power hungry someone can be, an ongoing theme in
the movie. Symbolism is another great aspect of the film. In the first scene, happy music is
contrasted with a man having stroke , representing the movies setting as a place that looks
perfect on the outside but is somewhat rotten on the inside. We also see symbolism through
the use of birds later in the film. The dialogue in this piece is superb, giving several
memorable lines such as the previously mentioned baby wanna fuck and this one ( A love
letter from me is a gunshot.) Dorothys also has several interesting lines (SHOTHE PUT
THIS POISON) In terms of message or moral, from what I understood the film is telling us
that there are a lot of fricking fricks in the world, butl love and happiness will always prevail.
Q
I will say One of the drawbacks of Blue Velvet is its forced imagery, which is aesthetically
interesting but clashes with the realistic elements of the movie. Another weakness would be
its pacing, since for around the first 20 minutes no conflict is presented.

Overall, i give this movie an 8 ouy of 10. It has solid performances and outrageous
characters and dialogue, but the pacing could be somewhat snappier and realism could be
moer strictly adhered to. Deifinitely recommended to people with decent taste who are above
13. Thanks for watching, this is Sam signing out.
