GROUP ACTIVITY #1

Limit of a Function
Macapagal, Golpe, Takahashi, Narca, Galisim
QUESTION 1

x² - 1
If f(x) , why does f(1) not exist?
x-1
Show the lim f(x) exists and find its value.
x→1
QUESTION 1 SOLUTION AND FINAL ANSWER

Theorem used to prove: Limit Theorem of the Quotient of Two Functions,

Limit Theorem of Linear Functions, Limit Theorem of the sum or difference
of 2 functions.

x² - 1 (x - 1)(x + 1)
f(x) = = = x + 1 = (1) + 1 = 2
x-1 (x - 1)

The value of lim f(x) is 2 and it exists

x→1
QUESTION 2

x+9-3
If f(x) , why does g(0) not exist?
x
Show the lim g(x) exists and find its value.
x→0
QUESTION 2 SOLUTION AND FINAL ANSWER

Limit Theorems cannot be used in this situation since, it will result to a non-existent of a
limit. Therefore, to answer this question, we will use the tabular method.

x g(x) = x+9 - 3 x g(x) = x+9 - 3

x x

-1 0.1715 1 0.1622

-0.5 0.1690 0.5 0.1644

-0.25 0.1678 0.25 0.1655

-0.1 0.1671 0.1 0.1662

-0.01 0.1667 0.01 0.16662

-0.001 0.16667 0.001 0.16666

∴ lim x+9 - 3 = 0.1666 ∴ lim x+9 - 3 = 0.1666

x → +0 x → -0

QUESTION 3

If h(x) = { 2x - 1, if x ≠ 1
1, if x = 1
, find lim h(x) and
x→1

show that lim h(x) = h(1).

x→1
QUESTION 3 SOLUTIONS AND FINAL ANSWER

Limit Theorems cannot be used in this situation since, it will result to a non-existent of a limit.
Therefore, to answer this question, we will use the tabular method.

x h(x) = 2x - 1 / 1 x h(x) = 2x - 1 / 1

0.7 0.4 1.3 1.6

0.8 0.6 1.2 1.4

0.9 0.8 1.1 1.2

0.99 0.98 1.01 1.02

0.999 0.998 1.001 1.002

∴ lim h(x) = 2x - 1 / 1 = 1 ∴ lim h(x) = 2x - 1 / 1 = 1
