Learning the subject Technical Writing was a challenge for me.

It’s literally too technical which

denotes consciousness and cautiousness in grammar usage. The onset of this subject brought us
in understanding “What is Technical Writing.” Based on my comprehension, technical writing is
a form of communication intended to address specific individual or problem. We should
remember that in creating technical paper, we need to consider it salient characteristics; clear,
concise, accurate and unemotional. Before, I never thought that technical writing serves a lot of
purposes, it’s not only created to inform but also to analyze events and to persuade and influence
decisions. Moreover, I’m really glad to learn this subject as it equipped me with the knowledge
and considerations to make in creating a technical paper. We should always know our audience,
in knowing our audience, we can adapt and modify our terminologies depending on the readers.
We should also know the purpose of our technical paper. In addition, we should write
objectively, avoid bias and subjective thoughts because in here our opinions should not be
included. Aside from the aforementioned learnings, I also marked the guide to technical writing.
This include accuracy, brevity, confidence, dignity, emphasis, facility, honesty, illustration,
judgement, knowledge, logic, mechanical neatness, normal procedure, objectivity, planning,
qualification, revision, straight sentences, thoroughness, unity, viewpoint, word choice and zest.
This subject also refreshed my mind with the Parts of Speech, a simple yet a bit tricky topic to be
learned. It’s a refresher for me to expound my knowledge about nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. We were also refreshed with the
knowledge about subject verb agreement. Several rules were discussed and now it was made
easier as it’s already discussed several times during our high school years.
Furthermore, this subject improved my ability in constructing sentences. Our topic, Common
Sentence Errors was a big help. I learned the errors in sentences that we committed which we are
not aware of. This include Parallelism Errors, Run-on Sentences, Sentence Fragments and
Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers. Now, I am aware that sentences should contain matching
elements, verbs must match with verbs, nouns must match with nouns, etc. If this won’t be
followed, we can commit Parallelism error. Run-on sentences should also be avoided we should
use correct punctuation or conjunction in joining clauses. In addition, we should also avoid
sentence fragments, we need to be straightforward in making sentences instead of using
incomplete sentence that lacks in thought.
After learning the foregoing lessons, I am confident that I’m equipped with the knowledge in
working on with real technical papers like application letter, résumé, memorandum, inquiry
letter, progress report, request letter etc. When I was on Senior High School, we already created
some of these papers especially application letter and résumé which is needed in work
immersion. And now, I became more knowledgeable on the things to consider when making
such letters. We discussed the salient parts of an application letter from introduction which
introduces your desired job and summarizes your credentials. The discussion or the body which
showcase your skills and the unique assets which is perfectly fit on the company or institution
you are applying. And the conclusion which calls for an action and how would the reader can get
in touch with you. More so, it’s really important to be mindful of the style and grammatical
structure of your application letter. It should embody accuracy, whereas as an English teacher I
was flattered because the expectation on us is really high in producing grammatically correct
paper. It should also be concise wherein being direct to the point is more important than
producing lengthy yet vague paper. Clarity is also necessary especially in pointing out your
desired position in a certain company or institution.
It’s really an awesome experience to learn all about Technical writing. This will really help me a
lot in the near future. I believe that one of the ways to be hired is to produce authentic and well-
constructed papers like application letter and résumé. I will always bury in my mind that quality
is better than quantity. It’s better to create short yet substantial papers instead of long but obscure
papers. I will always remember this subject especially when I finally in the point of applying for
a job as a certified professional teacher.
